Intel Mac :: Keeps Turning Itself Off Randomly
May 18, 2012
IMac 20" intel core duo, 2G running leopard 10.5.8. Mac will turn off randomly and won't start again unless its left for a while, it's no getting hot (that I can detect). So far I have reset the SMC, run the AHT which came up with nothing, tried another power lead, tried it in different power outlets.

So for the past few weeks, the little green light has gone off at random times. It creeps me out, feels like I'm being watched. Anyway, I put a little piece of post it to cover up the camera so I won't be so paranoid. I already did an SMC reset and the problem still persists.

1. Screen Brightness is on. Desktop functioning as normal, according to the brightness set.
2. Randomly, the entire screen brightness will switch 'off' - but not go to sleep - it is set at the brightness level, as if you would have turned it all the way down manually. Automatically, my screen goes from:
3. After clicking the brightness button on the screen - when I look closely - the brightness control is set at its previous level, but the screen is not at that brightness! darkest screen (above, right) + brightness settings up   Â
4. In order to solve the issue, I have to hold down the minimize brightness button and then turn it back up, from the lowest setting. This only works about one in five times. All other times, the screen briefly flashes and then goes dark again.    Â

screen goes black, laptop seems to have not turned off but nothing can turn the screen on. seems fine after a reboot but problem recurs at some random future inconvenient point in time. problem is annoyingly inconsistent - it will occur at random (no discoverable software or hardware conjunctions), sometimes around once weekly, sometimes less frequently. have already had it in a mac repair, said they fixed it, something to do with graphics card firmware.Â

People iMacs are turning off. This has been happening to mine for months.Â
I have 24GB of RAM. I expanded it with memory from Crucial's website when I first got it. This problem seems to be getting worse. I come back to my computer to find that it has restarted itself. Â
The iMac is running OS X 10.8.5. The model identifier is iMac13,2.Â

I've been using Pc's for the past 30 odd years so am totally new to Mac. I'm doing my best to adapt to this new different OS and so far have found some things more user friendly but others ? I've more or less given up on those as Mac doesn't seem to do those things. These are probably Windows based and I'm assuming Mac has its own alternatives that I haven't discovered yet. Anyway, my immediate problem is this goddamned frustrating situation when I try to re-activate the comp' after waking it from 'sleep'. Sometimes its fine but others, it comes back on but freezes and the only option I have is to turn it off at the switch and do a re-boot!

At times my iMac (27" July 2011) starts making loud fan noise with mouse showing turning rainbow. The only way to stop is forced shutdown by pushing back button for a while. Yesterday I switched to widget screen and saw hard drive fan speed > 4000 rpm without CPU and temps by on the high side.

My mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro randomly "loses" its retina display at the top menu (becomes pixel-y), where the battery, sound, and wifi logos are (on the top right side of the screen). A restart fixes the issue, but I want to know if this is an issue that can be fixed?Â

I have a 2006 IMac that works perfectly except for one thing. One day last year out of the blue the sound stopped working and I would get the 'not allowed' circle when I tried to adjust the volume. the problem persisted for a week or so, then the sound just came back on. Everything was fine untill a month ago when the same thing happened. I did some research and tried the toothpick trick and everything related but nothing worked, then the next morning the sound was on. Over the next few weeks the sound would go on and off randomly for no apparent reason. It has now been off for two solid weeks and I don't know what to do. Is it possibly a loose connection inside the computer that just needs to be plugged in?

My iMac randomly freezes and crashes on me. Most of the freezes occur when scrolling with my trackpad on websites with Google Chrome. I get the pinwheel and have to use the power button to turn off and on the iMac. I haven't noticed any particular connection to Flash websites or video related sites. It just seems kind of random. I've also been careful to have absolutely nothing else running and it still does not prevent it. Â
Also, from time to time the iMac will crash and go to a solid color screen. Either Blue-Gray, White or Black. It seems to be random colors. When this happens, I have to use the power button to cycle it off and back on again.Â
Some info about my iMac: Model Identifier: iMac7,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2 GHz Mac OSX 10.6.8Â
What could be causing this or how can I diagnose the problem? I can give more info if needed.

my screen is just randomly going dark. its not shuting down - just seems to go to sleep but nothing I do wakes it short of turning the power button off then on. When I do that it quickly comes on again and seems to work fine. Seems to be happening with more and more frequency and is not particular to any software. I've read the boards here - I'm not a gamer ( no games on this computer) I'm a photographer with lots of files and I use photoshop alot. Yesterday I was on you tube and my screen went dark again but the video was still playing - I could still hear it. In fact, I could hit my mouse to stop and start the video but I couldn't see anything.
