Intel Mac :: Desktop Flickers When Dragging File To Trash In Dock?
Jun 1, 2012
Is this bad? Just started happening yesterday. Restarted, but persistent... when I drag a file from an open folder on my desktop, the entire desktop flickers like you can see below. Like ghosted images of all the icons and open windows get scrambled around. It happens in a fraction of a second, but I was able to capture a screen shot. Please let me know what this means.Â
this seems like a really simple thing i want to do but i cant seem to figure it out. All i'm trying to do is put a shortcut of the trash can onto the desktop. I have my dock hidden and it can be a pain to try and make it appear to delete something. i searched spotlight for trash and there are no hits. i try to drag the trashcan from the dock and nothing happens. There has to be a solution???
I've seen some posts where one or a couple of these problems have arisen but not all simultaneously. The trash is there somewhere because I can delete but only via finder. The dock however cannot be coaxed back into existence and I can't activate any of the desktop icons by clicking on them. I also can't minimise the windows - the red and green buttons work fine but the yellow (although there and blinks when clicked) doesn't have any effect.
If I want to uninstall an application, is dragging it to the trash the same as uninstalling it? I get the impression that it isn't. What about all the files the app has left behind?
i'm new to Mac and im just learning all the features. I bought the 15" mid macbook pro and this laptop is awesome. However, i accidentally deleted the last 2 icons next to the trash icon. I know that you can retrieve icons by going to the application and dragging them to the dock. But the last 2 icons i believe is something different. I forgot the name of the icons as well but i know it has something to do with recent activities or some sort.
I've been a Mac user for a few years now but I was reluctant to update to Mavericks because whenever I hadn't done a clean install my macbook would become very slow and unstable, so I was using Lion until I bought a new Macbook.
Before, whenever I wanted to delete an app I'd open the Application folder on the Dock and drag it straight to the trash from there. In Mavericks, however, when I try to do that the app just stays there, and I have to open the application folder on Finder to be able to drag it (and it prompts me for my password). Is there a way I could go back to deleting them right from the App folder in the dock (and not having to type my password every time)?Â

I tried to delete google chrome many times by dragging the app to trash but it didn't work?I must delete it because I downloaded an app by mistake and since then all webpages I open are full with ads.
I use both Firefox and Safari and often want to save a URL to my desktop to go back to the site later on to read it. Problem is: when I drag the favicon next to the URL in either browser down to my desktop, the icon on my desktop reverts to a generic "@" icon. I'm left with dozens of these identical icons--not so easy to browse. How do I get Leopard to preserve the favicon of a URL when I drag it from my URL window to my desktop from either Safari or Firefox?
Basic questions: When I drag an item to the desktop, say, a mail message, it always appears on the right side of the screen no matter where I release my mouse on the drop. Is there any way to have an item appear where I release the drag-and-drop, or will the dragged item always go to the right side of the desktop?
Another question: is there any way to select a bunch of mail messages and drag them into a folder. I know you can do it where all the emails get merged into one text file, but is there a way to keep them all as individual emails with a group drag and drop?
I just bought a new MacBook Pro to supplement my iMac.If I remember correctly, when I hook up a laptop to my desktop I can access it the same way I would an external hard drive? I'm wondering if it's possible to drag and drop PROGRAMS (self contained ones are obvious, but I'm talking programs like Creative Suite 4) over to my new computer? I'm guessing that certain programs that require registration will need the registrations to be re-entered? Just wondering what's the best way to transfer specific applications from my desktop to my mac. Also, Will any specific conflicts arise by transferring from Leopard to Snow Leopard? (other than program compatibility issues)
1. I've heard that installing applications is as simple as dragging and dropping the file into the Apps folder. Is this true? What about the more complex programs like Photoshop etc?2. In iPhoto 09, I know about Events and how they group photos together by date etc. but I'd like to have more general events like "My Nephew" "Nights out" "Sports Photos" that could span years. Is this do-able?3. Is it possible to hide an entire event in iPhoto?4. Does iPhoto use destructive image-editing techniques? Or is it non-destructive, keeping the original safe and un-edited?
When I'm dragging a bunch of files, say in list view, from one open folder window to another, what is the purpose of their jumping around from one configuration to another as I'm dragging them? Is this supposed to make dragging easier? I've been trying to live with this for five months now since getting my new Mac and the purpose of this is still lost on me. I thought it was somehow supposed to make seeing what you're dragging easier in some way, but I find these constant acrobatics to be simply annoying. This never happened in the pre-Lion OS, and after giving it a lengthy and fair trial, I still can't see the point of it. It is distracting and makes it harder to see what I am dragging and where.
The Dock doesn't appear. Spaces is greyed out and won't stay enabled. Desktop picture cannot be selected (stays standard blue screen). Screensaver does not work and cannot set hot corner.Â
I have deleted the dock plists, restarted, repaired permissions, updated to 10.6.8, restarted again. Still no dock, no Spaces, no desktop picture change, no screensaver.Â
How did this begin? I had lots of large-memory apps running (eg. Photoshop, Garageband, Pages, Audacity, etc) and then there was a freeze, I can't remember which app – probably Photoshop) and I had to shutdown using the on/off button.Â
After that startup, all the problems were present. :-( (I've looked at related Dock-crash posts here: I do not have installed: Parallels; Fusion.)Â

Copied files to an external hard drive and then deleted them from mac HD and empty the trash. I then went into disk utility and made a second petition for external hard drive and it deleted all the files on the external hard drive. Is there a way to recover the files that were on the extra the hard drive or from the Mac hard drive?
I am not sure how to 'title' my exact problem, so I'll explain it as best I can. I've also attached an Illustration of the problem which might explain it better.
I currently have the items in my folders displayed as 'columns'. When I open a new folder, the folders contents are displayed in the next column to the right. So after going a few folders in, the scroll bar on the bottom of the finder window is somewhat large. This is normal.
However the problem is, whenever I drag a document from my desktop into the most recently opened folder, finder resets the scrollbar to the position on the left side, forcing me to drag the window over again every time. This it a rather large annoyance, since the way I work I pull and replace lots of files from the same series of folders.
I just recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard (finally), and ever since then I have noticed this strange issue with Finder. It did not happen in Tiger or Leopard.
Is this something that Snow Leopard now does by default now, or am I the only one experiencing this?
My office does have a time machine backup system, but I'm pretty sure it only backs up our individual hard drives. This file was only saved to the office Shared server. The weirdest part is that all there is in the trash is a bunch of .ipa files from my last iPhone update. But I didn't delete those.so why are THEY in the trash to begin with, but not the files that were actually deleted?I've been having tons of issues with other stuff since we upgraded to Lion.I've absolutely got to get that file back..
My screen flickers all the time. It goes blank and sometimes it takes a while to go back to normal. It is ot 100% anymore. The computer works perfect, but screen doesn't
Last night I was working in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop when my screen began to flicker like crazy and eventually froze. I could still move the cursor around but nothing would work. I couldn't force quit any of the applications or shut down the system. It eventually shut itself down and after restarting everything seemed normal. About 20 minutes later it did the same thing as I was switching between Safari windows using Expose'. (I recorded a small clip of the flickering and put it on youtube if that helps: [url]...?v=UBjRwRu4IOg ) After the second time this happened I again tried to start it up and it loaded to a gray screen, no startup chime, no apple logo. Nothing. I hit the power button and it shut down again. And the next time it booted all the way. I then shut it down with the intention of calling Apple Care today but apparently my Apple Care ran out in the last month or so. So, I'd have to pay $49 to talk to them about this issue. I thought I'd come here first.
I have been offered update on Adobe Reader appx 12 times now and it has been accepted and closed other programs to install. It 9.5.1 version. Now I have two pdf files on my desktop 28bea10-8739248572913388.pdf and a similar one which cannot be trashed or removed from the desktop. A sign comes up cannot be deleted therefore cannot be removed from the desktop.
I downloaded a .part file and now I can't delete it from my desktop! I've tried everything, I think. When I try, I get the dialog box that says it is a file that can't be deleted!
I am trying to retrieve all my music because they dont appear in itunes anymore. I accidentally deleted all files from trash and now most files appear on my desktop.
