Hardware :: Unable To Know About Grey Screen/Migration?
May 9, 2010
What I can tell you is that a month ago, all appeared fine, and I was using Logic, then when I went to open MAIL I got a crash and ever since then, nothing has worked.
I have had Western Digital send me not one but two new hard drives as the first was DOA.
I tried Disk Warrior, Drive Genius 3 as well as Tech Tool 5 and not one can help. In fact, the closest I got was when I ran a /bsin/fkck -fy (or something like that), and it said minor problem, and fixed the issue or so I thought, got a blue screen for about 5 seconds, then it went to GREY again.
I have tried disconnecting all the peripherals, mouse, keyboard (external for a macbook pro) and same thing. I then tried SAFE boot, same thing.Verbose, yup same thing.
So now I do a fresh install and MIGRATION hangs at less than one minute left forever,I then did a new install then ran MA.
I made sure to use a different name then the one I wanted to import, updated from 10.5 to 10.5.8, then performed a migration assistant and kept getting a NEW HANGING where I would then get a message, something is wrong with your network, and the HD space never got smaller.
Continue or Cancel, those were my options.
There doesn't seem to be a way around this and I know it's something small like a silly display thing (example) as I have a 24: HDMI 1080P attached, but detached it when trying to boot.
Does anyone have an anwser for the GREY screen or the hanging migration both at the FRESH INSTALL LEVEL to the no MIGRATION, create dummy admin account, then it hanged at NETWORK ERROR.
Advice and better yet, a solution would be wonderful.
Like I said, all was fine until I launched mail and then that is when the problems started.

New iMac is stuck on grey apple screen after startup. It is a 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 running OS 10.9.4. The problem occurred after a migration from my older 2009 iMac which is running Snow Leopard 10.6.6. When the restart occurred from Migration Assistant, the new computer will not boot up to the login screen. Disk utility did not solve problem.

The other day my 1st gen MBP functioned without any probs, until it suddenly powered down. After I removed the question marks from my eyes, I offcourse tried to reboot it.
But it never makes it beyond the grey screen, sometimes untill the apple logo, sometimes not even that far.
Offcours I googled around first to gather some info before I decided to put this problem down on this board. I found this could be a HDD failure, but in those cases, with other people, it could be powered holding apple + s, and doing some checks that way.
Mine doesn't even come that far
I have a second hand 1st gen MBP with upgraded HDD and RAM, snow leopard, and coincidently since last week no more battery... so i may have powered down a completely unprepared mac by tripping over the wire, once or twice...

I own an iBook G4. I could not get it to boot up, it would just go to a grey screen with the apple symbol and a timer/clock that looked like a gear.FYI: I may provide more information than necessary in the text below. I'm not sure what is and isn't relevant.
Following some advice I found in this forum I got out my old OS disks to boot from the disc instead of the hard drive. I intended to archive the old hard drive and install my latest OS (10.4.6 on the disc, 10.4.11 was the version I had been running on the machine, I believe). The machine told me it needed 4.5 Gb to install 10.4.6 Tiger, but I only had 4.0 Gb left on the hard drive. So instead, I archived and installed with the OS that came with the computer originally, 10.3.4.
I got things going, did the archive and install, and got to the log in screen. Unfortunately, I could not remember the password, so I booted up in single user mode, and entered the following to get into the machine:
1. mount -uw /
2. rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
3. shutdown -h now
This got me in with a new admin login, and I started up in 10.3.4. I soon noticed that I could still see all of the files that I put on the hard drive on my old operating system. I thought I shouldn't be able to see them, but since I could I decided to try to copy them to an external hard drive. When I did, I got an error message saying that there was a read/write error. I was not entirely surprised, but I decided it was time to turn back to the forums for help.
What I want to do is copy everything from my old hard drive onto an external hard drive, make room on the iBook hard drive to reinstall my latest operating system (10.4.6). Once I've done that I'd like to get the essential files back onto the iBook from the external hard drive and continue using my computer (even though it is a dinosaur).

Hi all, I have two Powerbook G4 laptops. Both have very similar problems. When I try to start up, the grey screen with the apple and spinning wheel appears, but I can't get beyond that. If I walk away for an hour, when I come back there will still be a grey screen with apple and spinning wheel.
I admit I know little about this sort of thing, so I began poking around online for solutions. I tried Tech Tool Deluxe. Inserted the disk and held down "C," but again it never progressed beyond the grey screen with apple and spinning wheel. Most frustrating. Is there any other way of running the disk with the laptop?
Entering the terminal yielded slightly different results on each machine.
Powerbook #1: Once in terminal I typed...
/sbin/fsck -fy
...response was...
disk0s10: I/O error.
Invalid Key Length
(4, 44890)
** Volume check failed
...tried /sbin/fsck -fy over and over, always received the same results.
Powerbook #2: Once in terminal, this appears...
jnl: update_fs_block: failed to update block 1073777488 (ret 5)
jnl: journal_open: Error replaying the journal!
hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)
...and it won't even let me type /sbin/fsck -fy.
I tried plugging both latops into my desktop in target mode. In both cases the target icon appeared on the laptop screen but the hard drive icon never appeared on the desktop screen. I would love to at least retrieve a few files off each machine, if nothing else.

just installed 10.5.6 on their last gen. iBook. She left the iBook plugged in to the mains and came back to find that the iBook was alternating between the grey Apple screen and a light blue desktop screen where she could see the cursor. Sometimes it would also switch to a blue screen without a cursor.
I've tried holding shift during startup - no effect.
I've tried rebooting NVRAM - no effect.

I was trying to install Windows XP Pro, but for some reason the it wasn't showing another HDD to install Windows on. So I quit the install, and restarted my computer. Now all that happens is the normal grey screen appears (with no Apple logo), then it goes to a black screen and has the blinking cursor (Kinda like DOS).

Whenever I try to use Screen Sharing to control this one particular Mac Mini, and someone else is using the mini, and I pick "Connect to Virtual Display", I get dropped to a grey linen screen. Like the login screen, but without a list of usernames or anything. There it sits. Here is what I see in the console of the mac mini when I try and use a virtual display from the other machine:Â

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (I think it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.Â

Thing is I got hold of a 1ghz 17" iMac almost for free, it had a dead logicboard (I checked it with a voltage-meter), but I figured I could fix it and have a small hobby project-thingie going on. Well I just got a new logic board today, for a 1ghz 17" iMac g4.
Things is I only get a bright grey screen from my Mac when I boot. I've tried connecting it to a external display and that works fine. Everything is there.
I then reinstalled Tiger on it, with the computer connected to my external screen. And I still have the same problem. (I have now disconnected the ext. screen and is controlling the iMac from my MBP). So at least it isn't the installation.
So what is the problem? I can via an Apple Keyboard control the brightness on the blank screen, which would indicate that it does react to input of some degree.
I've read that if the inverter is dead or anything else is dead, you would get a rolling grey screen, flicker or something like that and not a steady bright grey. One thing I'm thinking is. What if somehow this logic board was for a 15" 1ghz imac g4? Can I check this?
I read that long thread about guys buying hi-res displays for their MBPs, and they had to replace some display profile? Could I maybe fix it with a different display profile-file?
I'm really confused by all this, and would appreciate any help I can get.
Model: PowerMac6,1
CPU-Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
and
the gfx chip is a GeforceMX4 with 32mb.
The display is a mode 9c27, manufacturer 610, serialnumber 00000, manufacture date: B84D7200.

before I went to bed, I was playing the Sims 2, when my iBook G4 crashed. Our power cord can be a bit dodgy, so sometimes that happens. I didn't really think about it much, just closed the laptop and went to sleep.Last Monday morning, I opened it and pressed the power button. It began turning on, and got as far as the grey screen with the apple and the spinning circle. And then it just froze. The circle stopped turning.
I freaked out a bit, and restarted it a bunch of times, each time with the same result. (One time it stopped spinning, and then told me a restart was required. Huh. The rest of the times the exact same thing happened though.) I even tried unplugging and removing the battery, but it made no difference. So eventually I just shut it and decided to try again later.Last Tuesday I opened it and pressed the power button without much hope, and again the apple and circle came up just fine, then stopped, but then a bunch of words and numbers popped up.I'm a complete computer noob, but they don't look good to me... or are they good?

Ive just got a Macbook Pro, late 2008 model, and i'm running into some difficulties transferring my settings/programs/files etc from my old macbook (purchased 2006).
Both are now running the latest version of migration assistant, and i've tried both ethernet and airport connectivity (I dont have a firewire cable).
Regardless of which method i use, both laptops just stay at the 'looking for other computers' phase. Ive had a quick google/search and cant find a solution, anyone help?
I use bootcamp if that makes a difference?

My Imac G5 stopped working. Bad power supply or logic board. I took out the hard drive put it in an enclosure and ordered a new Mac Mini.
When the mini arrived I used the migration assistant to move everything over. Here are some issues:
1) Microsoft Office is there but the applications will not start up. I get a pop up that says that "this application will not work on this type of mac".
The Icons are also greyed out with a stripe through them.
2) I Work '08. Same as above.
I did check to see if there were any trial versions of this software on the mini and there is not.
I've also tried to look into the Old Hard Drive and see if any files were not moved over.
When I access the old drive it will not let me get into certain folders because it says I do not have permission. They have little red yeild signs beside them.

I got my new iMac last night and proceeded to migrate my MacBook to the iMac through the ethernet cable. Everything thing went smooth and as planned until i opened iTunes.
I open it and my music is not in there. I can click on the store and it operates properly, but when i go back to music, part of the image of the store is in the iTunes window.
ALSO, when i plugged in my iPad it didn't recognize it. it did nothing, actually.
iPhoto opened normally and appeared to be okay, until i started to click on the thumbnails, and it opened up a black screen.
this is happening for almost every photo in iPhoto except for two that happen to be recent ones and located on the desktop.
seems to me that iphoto is having trouble locating the original files, but i have no idea how to tell it where they are.
i should say that all the files (photos, music, movies, apps, iphone and ipda backups) are on the iMac. it seems like everything is there, but these two programs can't seem to locate the files.

So yesterday my iMac froze while using iTunes. I had to manually power it off. I turned it on again and it booted fine. I tried iTunes again and shortly after that it froze again. I manually shut it down again. I tried to turn it on once again and it won't load the desktop. It just stays at the grey screen with the apple and spinning thing. I am pretty sure I have to erase and install again, but I am not really sure on how to do it correctly especially since I can't even get to the desktop. My OS is 10.5.8 and the machine is only 2 years old and hasn't really given me any problems before.
