I'm unable to erase a disk/volume so that I can migrate. The only thing it's allowing me to do is erase free space. I am using MacBook 10.6.8 and migrating to a different MacBook using 10.6.8.

So Far I have used 450GB, so there should be enough room to do this right? Although when I go through the process, I get the message 'not enough space on drive'.
Trying to set up a new Macbook Air with migration assistant using a Time Machine backup of an old computer on a Time Capsule. Time Machine on the old computer shows the backup. However, Migration Assistant says that there is no volume and will not recognize the backup. What should I do?

My Time Machine quit BU for over 10 days and then it started to BU whole computer like it was an initial BU. Previously it used 1.5TB of 2TBHD so tried to BU everything again. I wasn't able to erase HD using Disk Utility so I changed the drive to a regular HD in Time Machine preferences and deleted data to trash. Tried to Erase in Disk Utility and it says disk is unformatted and stops utility. How do I erase this HD?

I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
On attached volumes I cannot save files. I recently used OS X migration assistant to move to my new iMac but the volumes that I used on the old system will not allow me to save to them (the os says it's a permissions problem). Short of renaming the new computer the same name as the old one.

I have my external HDD partitioned for my Media storage and for Time Machine. Unfortunately, my mac is having problems and I want to back up my computer to reinstall Lion. Problem is...Time Machine is also not backing up anymore (last backup was 2 months ago). So I want to erase the Time Machine volume of my HDD so I can use SuperDuper to backup my hard drive...but of course I don't want to erase the media partion. Â So...using Disk Utility, I can just erase the Time Machine partion (volume) of the HDD and leave the Media portion intact, correct? I would hate to erase the Time Machine volume and find out the Disk Utility also erased all my music and movies too!

I'm moving from a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 to a MBP running 10.7.5. I thought this would be pretty simple ... just attach my Snow Leopard Time Machine external drive to the Lion MBP and run Migration Assistant.Â
But when I go through the MA steps, MA does not see my TM drive. I've made sure I have the latest upgrades and have run Disk Utility's First Aid on the TM drive.Â
Ideas? I know I can try MA with other interfaces but using TM allows me to work on my old computer until my new one is ready.Â
The TM drive is a 500GB Iomega eGo drive.Â

I ran Disk Utility and tried to verify the disk, which told me the disk needed to be repaired. I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this. When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:

When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted." When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine. As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.
I am trying to reinstall Lion on my macbook pro, but every time the hdd shows up as 'locked' and when I attempt to format it, it gives me a "volume erase failed with the error - cannot unmount disk" message. It appears as if some files withing the disk are still running but I have no way of quitting them-knowingly. I can specify more if this seems to vague.

I have a MacBook Pro which was originally supplied with OS X10.4.9. I have upgraded using disks purchased from the Apple store to 10.5 and subsequently 10.6. More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.Â
when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?

w' issue for no prompt for disc two! This leaves you with partial OS!!! Apple knows it is an problem now. MBA not as tight and tested as my other Apple products.
Oh, how I wish they had fire wire option! I have returned and will wait for issue to settle down. Neat box too many potholes. Have a good time reaching the MBA tech team.
I have 43GB available on a 120GB drive on my MacBook base model and I'm trying to partition via BootCamp.I'm trying to allocate 32GB to the Windows partition but I keep getting the following error message:Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.Now I've backed up my disk and launched disk utility, and try to follow above directions here but the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) area is grayed out and when I click apply after highlighting the MacBook are (in blue), it errors out and says the disk is out of space.

When I use Disk Utility from the Recovery HD, it says the volume appears to be OK. I verified by using fsck in single-user mode, and it found no problems either. Which do I believe? I am having trouble erasing DVD+RW discs. When I insert a used disc and try to erase it in Disk Utility, the process seems to complete almost immediately, ending with OS X asking me if I want to mount the inserted blank disc in Finder. However, if I eject the disc and put it back in, everything is still on there. (detail: When erasing, there is usually a short interval where a striped progress bar is shown, after which a "normal" progress bar is slowly filled as the disc is erased. However, for me only the striped progress bar is shown--the "normal" progress bar is skipped--and then OS X says erasing is done.) If instead of ejecting the disc I choose to go ahead and burn something as if Disk Utility has actually erased the disc, I get a laser power calibration error.
