Question: Can a wireless printer 'join' an Airport Express Network? The printer in question is not near my router, can the printer join the network wirelessly so that I can print w/o a USB connection?
View 4 RepliesI have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
With an Airport Express-connected printer, is there any way to configure things such that:
- I can leave the Airport Express on (as a base station)
- I can leave the printer off by default (so as not to waste energy)
- I can select 'print' within an application
- The print job queues
- I can then switch on the printer and the job will begin processing
Is this possible with an Airport Express-connected printer? The problem is that the printer is a fair walk from my office and I have to walk there to switch it on and then walk back to print and then walk back to collect the print out.
I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has the following situation: In the living room he has a stereo hooked up to a single Airport Express (the only wireless router in the house.) In the sunroom he has an iMac Core 2 Duo running the latest version of Tiger hooked up directly to a DSL modem. Itunes recognizes this Airport express and successfully streams music to it. WiFi devices connect to this network but won't connect to the internet even though internet sharing is activated under the iMac's system preferences. Are there some tweaks in the settings that will make this work or does he absolutely need another Airport Express connected to the DSL modem?

My cable modem is, unfortunately, not in the same place where I need my router, since I want to hook my desktop, ethernet printer, and other devices up to the airport extreme router. So, is it possible for me to hook my cable modem up to the Airport Extreme via ethernet, and then somehow connect my Airport Express router to that to get out to the net? I want my laptop to join the router, not the Airport Express, so I can gain access to my printer and files on my server hooked up to that router while still maintaining an internet connection.
View 13 Replies View RelatedAfter a surge fried my beloved HP LaserJet 1320, I purchased an HP LaserJet P2055dn. This has a built-in print server, to my understanding, with an Ethernet port that would be available for me to connect to a router. I would ideally like to share this printer between my MacBook and another computer (an HP notebook PC running Vista). What's the best idea here? Please bear in mind one thing: the HP notebook has flaky wireless, so it might have to use an Ethernet cable at some point--thus I'd like to explore all of the feasible options.
1. USB to my computer and set up printer sharing?
2. Ethernet to my computer and set up printer sharing? (Does that make any sense? Maybe not!)
3. Get a wired router and, while the computer is on my desk, connect it to the printer and to the connected computers.
4. Get an AirPort Express and connect the printer up to the USB port. Now, we're using WPA2 on our wireless network here, and I thought I read somewhere that one cannot extend a wireless network that's WPA2. Can I hook up a printer to an Express that's a client?
5. One idea that especially intrigued me: Get an AirPort Express and connect the printer up to the Ethernet port, then set up network printing on all connected computers, rather than Bonjour printing. Again, network-extending question still applies--I'm really clueless here.
Since I *have* a network printer, would network printing (i.e., option 5) be faster/better/more efficient than Bonjour printing? Less software or drivers to install? or more?
im off to college in 2 weeks and would like to set up a wireless network in my residence room with my airport express. Its a small room, but i would still like to be able to move from my desk to bed or whatever without wires, and also i would like to be able to hide my printer somewhere. Heres the catch. My residence doesn't allow wireless networks for some reason. I know i can make my network hidden. But will that be enough to keep them from finding out? I imagine every now and then they might just scan for networks to see whats out there. But if mines hidden, i shouldnt have a problem, correct? Just want to make sure. Not sure what the consequences are, but im sure they would just ask to shut it down.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently moved and am connecting my iMac (2006 Intel) via the internal Airport card to a high-speed cable network here at home.
For some reason, my connection started off fine but after a few hours (sometime minutes) of browsing the web, the connection will slow to a crawl or just stop completly.
I've tried changing the DNS settings, turning Airport off/on, re-booting the wireless router (it's a Netgear) all to no avail.
The connection will seem to be okay and then...back to the molasses slow or no connection at all. At my previous residence, I was connecting the same way without any issues.
As an aside, there are 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and a MacBook Air all connecting to the same network without any issues whatsoever.

Lexmark 4310 series printer will not print after printing first job after setup. Msg in printer window says printer not connected however the green light is solid on the printer. Lexmark tech support says the issue is with comcast router. Comcast says issue is mac related because both macs fail to print while HP machine works fine....

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

1 Airport Express to Extend the Network
The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?
I'm trying to connect an AE to my PC using XP with a D-Link DIR-655 WiFi router. I've used the airport utility and connected the AE to my router via ethernet. It appears to be setup properly and I can see it on the D-Link software. After disconnecting the ethernet cable and with the AE sitting next to the router it continually shows up and then disappears. The light is green on the AE. Then I disconnected the power and moved the AE into the place where I'm going to use it.
Now it will show up on my D-Link software occasionally but the light won't turn green. It also doesn't show up on the airport utility software. I also have a Touch and ATV that both work fine on the same network and the same location. The AE is about 30 feet from the router with only one wall in between them. Am I missing something here or could there be a problem with the AE?
I've set a wireless network and connected my multifunction printer in an AirPort Express. I can access it from my computer to print, but the scanner utility doesn't recognise it. What could be wrong?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a standard wireless network for the Internet, and have just bought an airport express to make my printer wireless -- thinking I could use it to create a second, separate network (with no internet connection) that just connected to the printer.
I realize that I'd have to switch networks from the Internet to the Printer if I wanted to print, and vice versa. No big deal.
But it didn't work so far. Maybe my theory is faulty.
I'm wondering if I need to also connect it via an ethernet cable to the wireless router.
Or I've just bungled the setup.

I have a networked printer which i can see and print to fine over a wired connection (it comes up in add printer utility)
When I switch to airport over my airport express it won't come up (Well it does for a millisecond then disappears) and if I manually add it via mdns:// it doesn't print.
I'm trying to use my work laptop at home. I can get it to connect to my Airport network, but it can't see the internet. I'm using WPA for authentication on the Airport.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I have a network running a Linksys B&G WRT54G router on a ComCast Cable internet connection. I have an iBook G4 (2005) and a B/W G3/400 connected to it. The iBook is using the built-in Airport Extreme and the G3 is using a valid Belkin PCI card (model: FD57000) 802.11G card. So the G3 is just chillin' downloading torrents and what not, but I noticed the speeds aren't that great and my iBook is slowed waaay down on just basic web browsing. I reboot the G3 and all of a sudden the iBook speeds way up. Once the G3 is back online everything is slow again. I've tried many settings and still am not satisfied yet (using the iBook on the same torrents as the G3 the speeds are insanely higher).

I just bought an Airport Express (Version: 6.3) And i tried installing it via the airport utility with no success. After several tries i got the Airport Express to install successfully but the blinking light on the Airport Express was flashing yellow. I know it was working because i was able to stream music via itunes to my Sound System. Everything was working fine, even though light was still blinking. I restarted my system and now it wont read my Airport Express?I also have a Airport Extreme Station (for wireless HD purposes) which i installed myself and have had no problems with, so i know im doing this right...But i just cant get this express station to work

View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm using an airport extreme as my primary router for internet and everything, and i have a airport express set up in my bedroom for wireless music. i've set it up that the express is joined with the extreme so internet (from the lounge room) and music (in my bedroom) all run through one network.
i just purchased a printer which i plugged into my airport express to enable wireless sharing, and in airport utility it shows the express is connected to the printer, but while im connected to the extreme it wont let me print to it, however it'll still let me stream music to it. And to make is very frustrating because the networks are joined, it wont even let me connect to just the express to do the occasional printing that i want.

My wireless network is connected to my iMac but the internet goes down a lot and I have to reset the wifi up in the menu bar. It doesn't lose bars at all or say its disconnected. My wireless printer always works just fine. None of the other computers in my house have this problem.
