Hardware :: Lacie Rugged 80GB Won't Mount On Desktop
Nov 19, 2008
I have a Lacie Rugged 80GB with Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0. I was using it just fine last night to back up my 12 PB. Then I yanked out the Firewire cord without ejecting it. Now, this morning it takes like 20min to mount. Then it says Read only, Time machine cannot write to this drive. I have tryed two different computers, all three interfaces and different cords. Now, It will not mount at all, no matter how long I let it sit. I hear the hard drive spinning, but will not mount and I can't see it in Disk Utility either.

My MacBook Pro is not showing my LaCie Rugged 3 Thunderbolt hard drive when connected. I can see from Disk Utility that it knows it is there, but in Finder I cannot see it.

I recently purchased two Lacie Rugged hard drives, a 500GB for client use (meaning, it is given to clients to review raw footage and then given back to me where I then make edits.) The 500GB is calibrated at 50% Mac usage and 50% other and it has been worked out fine thus far. The other hard drrive is a 2TB Rugged XL Hard Drive has not been used due to the pop up I get when clicking the LaCie Setup Assistant which reads "You can't open the application LaCie Setup Assisstant because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
1.) What does "You can't open the application LaCie Setup Assisstant because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." mean?
2.) How do I fix it?
3.) Will fixing it effect my 500GB drive?

I knocked my external off the desk. Smash, buggered that hard drive. So I bought a new drive, made sure it was the same drive, installed it fine. But it's not mounting. The blue access light on the front just flashes continuously, but the drive won't mount so I can format it.

I am new to this forum and hoping for some advice with this hard drive issue.
I opened a brand new Lacie 500 GB Hard Drive. It is connected to my macbook via usb. I selected it as my hard drive destination in Time Machine and ran the backup option.
The hard drive did mount. About 5 minutes in the backup option failed - a time machine error: time machine backup failed.
I ejected the drive and unplugged it/turned it off and rebooted my laptop. Now the hard drive does not mount on my desktop however will show in disk utility. It lists with the Lacie name and another subdivision under the name.
When I try disk repair, erase or partition..I always get the same message: resource busy. After the error, the hard drive subdivision disappears leaving only one name on the list in disk utility. (It does not have the name underneath it).
I apologize for my semi technical description. I am new to mac and appreciate any advice on how to fix this issue. All I want to do is backup my laptop using the new hard drive with time machine.

I bought the LaCie Little Disk 320gb about a year ago and it has been working fine till recently..
The problem that I have is that the laptop that I use (Powerbook G4) doesn't recognize the HD anymore..
I have tried all cables (both firewire's and the usb) but nothing works..
I did try it on multiple computers (macbook's / imacs and even some windows computers) not one did recognize it.
(well the windows computer I used it on did recognize it but it cant open it and Windows Explorer stops working till you pull out the HD).
The only think I can think of is that I pulled out the HD to many times without safely removing it first..
I got a lot of data on the HD and I'd (offcourse) like to get it back,
I haven't been to the store yet (going somewhere this week).

I just purchased the Lacie 1TB hard drive. I've plugged in the power wire and the 800 fire wire. The setup assistant is supposed to appear on my desktop, but it doesn't. Do I have to plug in all the wires that came with the HD?

Since I tried to install Leopard and uninstalled it again as it has to many bugs (at least with my configuration) my external LaCie 500 Gb USB drive for back-up doesn't show on the desktop anymore. In disk repair the drive appears and repair shows "no problems". On an other internal disk I still have Leopard installed, and if I boot my G5 under Leopard the disk is visible and works fine.
Information:
G5 1,8Ghz mono; MacBook black
Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Tiger again after Leopard uninstalled

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

I just started drinking the Mac Kool-Aid when I ordered my first Mac - a MBP - last week. I must admit it tastes way better than the Windoze 3 day old cold coffee I'm used to. So far I'm loving it, but I'm running into one issue on my work network. After trying for 3 hours with our Linux guru we could not get Finder to open a connection to our file/web server which is Debian (Linux) through Samba. I tried everything I could think of and there's not much help on Google. Using the command line mount_smbfs I was finally able to mount the samba share on our Debian to a folder in my home directory. Right now this is fine, for the rest of the day I'll be able to work, but I'm just wondering if there is a way I can create a script that runs when I login that does the following:
1) At login check if my Server is available (192.168.1.216) (this in case I'm using my MBP on the road or from home)
2) Run this command if the server exists: mount_smbfs //myusername:mypassword@192.168.1.216/share /pathto/mountfolder/ondesktop
3) The last part is the key (I guess) - I want this share to show up on my Desktop like when I connect a USB drive or how my Macintosh HD does
I'm assuming it's fairlly easy to create a script that runs at login? I've Googled a little with no success but I think the tricky part will making sure the 192.168.1.216 is a valid server -- or maybe there doesn't even need to be a check it just runs the command and if it's not there nothing happens? The other tricky part for me is figuring out where exactly I need to mount the drive to so that it appears on my desktop as a mounted drive instead of in my /Users/username/smbMount folder that I arbitrarily made. The later is what I really need to konw as I'm sure with alot of Googling I can find the best way to create a login script in Leopard, but I have no idea where to mount it to and I'm afraid to just start trying to mount to some device in /dev/ which (I think) could potentially screw things up.

I am using a 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon MAC running Leopard OS (10.5.6). We are 3 designers using 1 network drive (Lacie Ethernet 1TB) to store our projects. I used to be able to backup this network drive using duplicate option of Retrospect Express to another Lacie that was attached to the USB port on my MAC. Since we upgraded to Leopard I have not been able to do this. I think this is because the network drive no longer mounts on my desktop. I think it used to think the network drive was on my computer because it was on my desktop, but it no longer does. Anyway, I need to back this drive up on a regular basis. (I am currently drag/copying it, did I say 1TB) Is there any way that I can get this drive to mount so that it is on my desktop? Does anyone know of any programs that might duplicate this NAS for me over the network to the one on my MAC or I could add another Lacie to the network. All of the software I have found is just to backup a MAC computer not a drive. If I can drag and drop it, it seems like this should be easy, but when I tried a command line copy it didn't work (I think because we named it "mac lacie disk" with spaces between the words and it stops at "mac" and can't find the rest.

I had WD send me a new drive, but now I do not know how to transfer the info from the old drive. Its not a dead drive- its obviously turned on and connected, but I can't mount it to my desktop. Any advice??

I try to mount the image, but it fails and wants me to try repairing, which as you see in the picture doesn't work. Any ideas?

I have a Western Digital 2 TB MyBook Studio II external drive that has been working fine. Now, it will not show on my desktop when it mounts. It does show in the sidebar and I can access the drive and files there, but I want the icon to show on the desktop. I connect it to my machine via an onboard Firewire 800 port, and the drive is the only device using that port. I have another Western Digital MyBook drive that mounts just fine (it is my Time Machine backup) via USB. I have 2 La Cie Firewire drives, and 2 OWC Firewire 400 drives, all 4 of which mount using a Firewire 400 hub that connects to a Firewire 400 port on my MacBook Pro.Â
I have repaired the disk (reports nothing is wrong), but I feel I have some setting for the drive in the wrong position. I just can't figure out what to do.Â

I bought my 13' macbook (white) with the intel 2.0 and 80gb HardDrive in 2007 with OSX installed and its been good until now, It had frozen and I had pressed the power button to reboot it cause it was not responding to anything. and now it will not start up, it just goes to a grey screen with a picture of a file with a question mark in it... I have tried and done everything in every article I could find on the internet to fix it, tried zapping the PRAM and restarting holding the C key and tried reinstalling the osx software but it does not work and only shows my disk drive and not my Hard-Drive as if it does not exist.Has my Hard-drive failed? Does this mean I need a new hard-drive? would replacing it fix this problem you think?

I have been trying to expand my bootcamp partition and so far I have WinClone'd it, then I merged it into my Mac partition, then I tried to create a new windows partition (but it didn't work), so now I am trying to create a new Mac partition. It failed a few times saying things like not enough space (though there was), and something about available resources. Now it has been going for about an hour, and the progress bar is in the loading mode, where it doesn't show the progress. I'm pretty sure it is hung up, and will go like this forever. How long should it take?
BTW I have a 1st gen uMBP 15"

I recently picked up the Intel 80GB SSD. First thing I did was update it to Intel latest firmware (02HD). I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and then created a bootcamp partition, splitting the drive 20GB for Mac OS X and the remaining for Windows 7 Pro. I installed Windows 7, bootcamp drivers and then did a windows update and I'm getting disappointing random read results in Windows 7.
I've attached a picture of my benchmark results. I haven't tested the drive in Mac OS X yet. I believe X Bench would be a good tool from reading the forums. Does anyone have any idea why it might be performing so slow, at reads no less! The write performance numbers seem to be on par with the results I've seen on the web, however all the reads are much slower than others.

i have a powerbook G4 running Tiger and was using a lacie d2 firewire hard drive. i wrote all my music onto the lacie and then ejected it but the device removal warning came. i thought nothing of it. i then tried to reconnect my lacie and read of it but now it spins up but my laptop doesn't recognise anything happening. it's not recognised in disk utility, profiler, and disk warrior can't find it either. i have tried a new cable, switching of the laptop and taking the battery out, most simiple things. don't have a clue what else i can do because nothing on my laptop even knows there is something connected to it

I used to have a PowerBook G4 and the 160GB Lacie Porsche Hard-Drive worked just fine, now, on the MBP it does not mount... System profiler doesn't even see it.. Any ideas? I have looked for drivers or other mac users with similar problems, but haven't found much. I have tried the obvious, and it seems to be a problem of communication betwen the machine and the hard-drive.. because surprisingly it mounted for a few seconds and I was able to see the data, however, it crashed when I tried to eject it and then it never mounted again..

I have three external drives daisy chained up to my iMac, an 80, 500 and 1TB. Recently the 500 has failed to show up on the desktop alongside the other drives. I can't remember exactly when it happened, but it may well have been after my computer crashed and forced me to shut it down using the power button.
All other drives appear to be fine, and the 1TB which is daisy chained through the 500 to the 80 shows up just fine. I've checked Disk Utility and there's no sign of the 500 drive there. However in System Profiler there is an "Unkown Device" next to the other drives in the Firewire section.
I've tried the 500 on a G5 and turned it on/off, restarted the computer and all the other usual things.

I have a PowerMac G4 AGP graphics with a 450 MHz single processor, a second internal Seagate Barracuda 120GB Hard drive and 1.2 GB of RAM.
I have my eye on the LaCie DVD-RW firewire drive designed by RA Porche. The LaCie data sheet specifies a minimum G4 500Mhz processor for compatibility. Does any one know whether my 450 Mhz processor will work? If no, can anyone recommend a DVD RW firewire external drive, or failing that, an external, firewire CD RW drive that I can add to my kit?

A few months ago I bought a new LaCie "Little Disk" external 500 GB HDD. Has Firewire and USB power.
Formatted for both Windows and Mac (Fat32). Everything was going fine. One day the disk would not eject. That is when the problems started. I had to manually remove the disk without ejecting.
Having done this with my other LaCie external HDD without any future problems (it would always remount) I didn't think anything of it.
Since then, the disk will not mount on either the Mac or the PC. The disk will not mount using the Firewire or the USB power connectivity even though the blue power light is on.
When I open Disk Utility with the LaCie plugged in, Disk Utility crashes. When I open Disk Utility before the LaCie is plugged in and then plug the LaCie in afterwards, it crashes.
I tried plugging the LaCie in before booting my MacBook to see if that worked, but that method prevented the MB from booting at all!
Contacted LaCie about this but have yet to hear back. I'm convinced that this can be solved cleanly without any data loss. Suggestions?
