Mac Pro :: Optimizing Refurbished
Dec 8, 2008I will be getting a refurbished mac pro soon and was wondering if i should do anything to get the most out of my mac. I cant remember where ive heard this but some people suggested defragging the computer right away and doing a clean reinstall of leopard and partining a hard drive with xp/vista. And was wondering if these are good ideas to consider. Or maybe there are other ideas I haven't heard of that will also work.

Aug 9, 2009I'm looking into purchasing a Macbook Air and was curious if anyone had opinion on which refurbish unit I should be looking at? Specifically, I want to keep my budget around $1,100.
Apple has two different refurbished units 1) 1.6Ghz w/ 120GB HD or 2) 1.8Ghz w/ 80GB HD.
Should I sacrifice 40GB of HD for 0.2Ghz? Is there that noticeable of a difference? I also noticed that the 1.8Ghz seem to be running Intel graphics rather than the Nvida. Any thoughts?

Feb 12, 2009Now that they have cheaper refurbished Macbooks up, I think I'm going to buy one today.
I have bought many refurbished products before, but never one this expensive. I just wanted to make sure that there is NO difference in warranty, quality or anything when buying refurbished. Simply just a computer that has been refurbished but includes everything as if it were being bought brand new.
Also I am definitely going to buy a new Hard drive for it immediately. I was reading around about the western digital 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm. Is it worth waiting for the 7200rpm or just go for the 5400? And is 500GB the biggest hard drive that I can put in my macbook? I want the biggest possible.
What is the exact drive that is compatible with the macbook?

Jul 8, 2009I just got mine refurbished and it appears in perfect condition, and runs perfectly, but I have no idea whether the previous owner stressed it, in which case it may be more likely to break, or may break soon after my year is up. I don't really want to buy AppleCare, but I guess I might if it really is worth it.

OS X :: Refurbished MagSafes Good?
Apr 19, 2010Well, recently my MacBook MagSafe screwed up, so I do not use my computer since 2 months ago (I know I know, its sad ) but anyway. I saw on eBay some "genuine" MagSafe chargers, well, I think are some sort of refurbished devices but I'm not so shure about it. Here's the link. Have anyone tried this MagSafes? I mean, they're not fake or something like that?
But there's another option called DealExtreme. They sell all kind of gadgets and electronic curiosities, mostly accesories, some of them "from" Apple. I say "from" because they sell this things in a very low price, close the 70% or more off. I heard that they got this amazing prices because they made their products from the same Apple factory in China, but without quality control, packaging, import taxes, Apple logo... etc.

I wouldn't mind getting the discount, but am worried the refurbished unit might have more problems than a new model. If the hardware of the machines built in the last few months have been tweaked to fix the screen issues, and a refurbished unit built on architecture predating these tweaks, then might it be better to go with a brand-new model?

IMac :: Refurbished I7 With Speck Of Dust In Corner
Aug 28, 2010My 27" has one speck of dust in the corner. I spoke with local Apple repair shop and they'll take care of it "provided no indications of tampering are detected". Other possible dings not detected, so I got away relatively light. I wouldn't worry about it normally, but it'll have to be mentioned at sale time three years down the road, and the price will take a hit if I leave it there.

I have read entries here where one user wants to buy/configure equipment that will last five years or be able to last longer than considered typical. I have read the replies indicating that is not possible, too much change and evolution, buy every 2-3 years, and all that. Since 1986 I have had these models: Mac Plus, IIci, 8600, and most recently a G4 1.25 Ghz MDD. I am writing this post on the G4. It is about eight years old. Look at the number of models I list and do the math. Those are the only machines I have had since 1986. I don't believe I could get this kind of service from an iMac or laptop. Note: The 8600 is still my scanning station, run as required.
What I learn is the computer does what it could do initially as well as it ever could. The problems eventually emerging are multiple. Increasing potential for hardware failure, inability to run newer software as operating systems fall behind, and today, an inability to run the most current browsers due to OS falling behind. I want capability to run newer versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and some CAD or solid modeling software. The G4 is doing what it did initially just as well as it ever did. It just can't move forward...........................

Feb 27, 2009I recently bought a refurbished macbook (2.1 ghz, 120 gb hd, 1 gb ram, not sure of video card), and I have been trying to play diablo 2. I downloaded the installer and patch for it, but after installing everything, I am unable to start it up at all. It says, "The application Diablo II quit unexpectedly." From here I can ignore, report or relaunch. I've reported once already, but relaunching is pointless and ignore obviously closes it out entirely. I am not even able to get a startup or menu screen to come up. I have never owned a Mac before now so I am learning as I go. I am pretty sure I need to get to 256 colors, but I am stuck with millions. There are no other available options and downgrading my resolution has had no effect.

I thought I got a good deal ($1299) but now that I think about it, I'm kind of upset that it does not have the built in battery. I wanted to ask about how many hours this MBP will last and if it was significantly less than the new MBPs with the built in battery. I don't use any graphic-intensive programs but I'd still like a long-lasting battery. I'm thinking about returning this one once I receive it and purchase the refurbished 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" with 4GB memory and the built in battery instead.
IMac :: Finding Information About Refurbished 27" And The AppleCare
Jun 12, 2010Well I received my refurbished 27" i5 about two weeks ago. Since taking it out of the box it has consistently rebooted itself and sometimes even shuts down where I can't power it back up unless I remove the cord from the machine and reinsert it. I tried everything to troubleshoot, zapped PRAM, Reset SMC Controller, logged times after removing USB components, ran multiple quick and full hardware tests. Finally I gave one last attempt and wiped my drive clean and reinstalled snow leopard...Not a single one of these measures worked.
So today I finally called applecare for the first time ever. THey were extremely helpful, didn't try to walk me through troubleshooting steps since they understood that I already tried them all. They instead stated that since Im at around 28 days since ordering (may 14) that I can have it repaired or they can claim the one I got as DOA and ship me a brand new one. Once I receive the new one I ship the old one back. They also bumped up my delivery to overnight since I have been putting up with the reboots and trying to troubleshoot myself.

Apr 9, 2012I just received my 21.5 inch imac refurbished. It is the 2011 model. I really like it, but the screen seems to constantly be adjusting brightness...Almost as if it is "flickering every 5-10 seconds. It is extremely annoying, and I think I will have to return it to apple. So another two weeks of waiting for a computer.

Aug 6, 2006I need a new laptop and I've decided to make the move from PC to Mac. I think the thing that's bothered me most about the dell laptop I've been using for the past 4 years is that it's quite heavy (I think somwhere around 8 pounds) and bulky.
I fell in love with the powerbook 12", but held off in part for financial reasons, and in part because I was hoping there would be a 12" macbook pro.
I hear great things about the macbook, but trying it out in the store, it seems to be just as big as my Dell and almost as heavy (well, at least quite a bit heavier than what I remember the 12" feeling like).
at $1199, apple is offering a refurbished powerbook which seems to offer as much if not more than the macbook
I'm a comic book writer that travels quite a lot, so here's what I'd like:
To be able to use MS Word and Final draft
To be able to use photoshop (really just to open photoshop files, not to do much to the artwork itself)
To have something very light to travel with, but still big enough to do a significant amount of work on without straining my eyes or feeling like the keyboard is cramped
and I guess possibly to play games, notably civ iv, although it seems neither the powerbook or the macbook is good for that (the powerbook at least has a dedicated videocard)
it's mostly the size thing that's causing the hangup...I think the macbook is just big enough to be a problem on planes, not fitting on the fold out tray.
OS X :: Lacie Backup Drive Not Being Seen
Dec 12, 2010I using a LAcie mini HUB to backup my macmini, store photos on, to store my itunes library on, and my iphone and ipad backups. Basically my whole life is on there. Well, my macmini does not recogize it anymore. I tried connecting it to my MBP and that does not recognize it. THe lacie drive has light that glows when it is turned on, but it looks like it is pulsing.
