MacBook Pro :: Extra Screen Real Estate Vs Portability

Jun 10, 2010

I'm going to college this fall and I'm buying a MBP. I have been debating whether or not to purchase the base 13" or the base 15". I'm leaning towards base 15" but would the extra screen real estate make a difference for school or would I be better off saving $500 or putting that money towards an SSD, etc. There are a ton of topics on "which MBP" but I haven't found an answer specifically tackling this scenario of screen real estate.

OS X :: Arranging Windows On Large Display Real Estate?

Jul 7, 2010

One of my relatives just bought a mac pro with 4 30" cinema displays. He is new to the mac and he is using me as his tutor! He asked me how he could make it so that he could organize all of his safari windows neatly on the display (automatically -- without manually dragging each one to it's corner on the respective display) so that he could have a bunch of safari windows open at the same time without overlapping each other. He came from Windows 7 and is used to the feature where you can drag a window to one side of the screen and have the window sized to the left half of the screen accordingly. He doesn't want exactly this, because that would waste a lot of the available real estate he has, but he needs something so that he doesn't have to drag 10 windows all across the landscape every time he opens safari.

IMac :: Screen Went To Static Real Quick Then Gave Some Code To Shut Down?

Jun 14, 2010

I was using my mac the other day and the screen went to static real quick then gave some code to shut down. SO I did HUGE mistake I am guessing. I have only 1 user with a password. When I enter my user password it goes to a blue screen for a minute then comes back and ask for my password again. Before I crashed it was asking for permission to use fonts from my external hard drive ??? not sure why.But I figured I would just reinstall my os x and be ok... not really worried about my info on the computer everything is backed up. However when i restarted and held down the c key while it started with the os disc inserted... I came back 9 hours later and it was still the white screen with the spinning sun thingie.... like it was still loading

But I know that the file stopped midway and only transferred half of it, around 3.5 GB. Is there any way to see in the Finder / Inspector the real size of this file which should only be 3.5 GB and not the 7 GB it is displaying in the Inspector?

I have no programs running and all I'm doing is lightly browsing the web (craigslist, macrumors, gamefaqs). My temps are 42C and approx. 1801rpm. I think this is normal, but my palmrest really warms up. Not to the point I can not use the notebook...just wondering if this is normal...

Software :: How To Display Real File Sizes

Feb 27, 2010

I work a lot with video, DVD's, etc. This work relies heavily upon the long-time, established standard when it comes to file sizes; that is, that noble of all numbers, 1024.

Sadly, it appears that some computer makers, hard drive manufacturers, and even some ISP's, no longer have respect for the decades-old standard of 1024, upon which the computer industry was built. Thus, to earn a higher profit, and to pretend to offer more than they really are, they have chosen to use 1000, instead of 1024, as their unit of measurement. It makes Internet speeds appear faster than they really are; it makes hard drives seem bigger than they really are; etc. To me, it is plain old greed and deception.

For someone involved with video, where accurate measurements are required, this modern usage of 1000 presents a problem.

Thus, I am looking for a program which will allow me to display REAL file sizes in the Finder -- which relies upon 1024k/Kb, 1024Kb/Mb, 1024Mb/Gb, etc. -- rather than the more modern approach of 1000 units/whatever.

I was hoping that a program like MacPilot, or a similar app, might possess this tweaking feature, but I have been unable to find one to date.

The only thing that I can do for now is to use a program like MediaInfo, which is a halfway point, because I actually want ALL of my files on my hard drives to display the file size based upon 1024, and NOT upon 1000.

OS X :: Mds (spotlight) Taking Up 128M Of Real Memory

Jun 6, 2005

According to Activity Monitor, the accursed "mds" process is taking up 127.32M of Real Memory, more than kernel_task at 114MB.

I rarely use Spotlight, but it and Dashboard have managed to use up most of my remaining 1GB of RAM. Very disappointing so far.

Dashboard widgets take up an average of about 200MB of Virtual Memory, but I'm hoping those numbers are skewed due to some creative threading.

I wish you could easily turn these guys on and off.

On a related topic, my VM Size is at 9.91 GB. I should logically have at least that much free on my disk, correct?

MacBook Air :: Upgrading From Rev A To Rev B - Real World Observations

Dec 7, 2008

I bit the bullet and upgraded from a Rev A 1.6GHz 80GB HDD MBA - to a Rev B 1.86GHz 128GB SSD MBA. I wanted to post my observations on what it's like to upgrade - I know many Rev A owners have - or are thinking about - upgrading to Rev B. In this post/comparison, I refer to "Rev A" and "Rev B". The Rev A is my older 1.6GHz 80GB HDD MBA. The Rev B is my new 1.86GHz 128GB SSD MBA

Caveat - Unlike some (but not all!) Rev A MBA owners, I love my Rev A MBA. I've had zero problems with it. It runs cool and I have not experienced any core shut downs. It would heat up when most laptops normally heat up and the fans would kick. It would cool down quickly when I moved on to something else. With video it never stuttered... Perhaps my Rev A has run so nicely because I don't ask a lot of it. It is a second Mac to my Mac Pro - I use it primarily for email, word processing, iTunes movies and web surfing - on the couch and on the road. It has REALLY been a great laptop and I have nothing bad to say about it...................

MacBook Pro :: Virtual Machine Vs Real Install

Apr 13, 2012

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro, just that you guys know. For my programming work with the robot (C/Assembler) I will need either Windows or a Linux OS. This is why I'm asking. I really hate Windows and I don't want to install that and besides, Linux is a much better option for compiling my code, etc..Should I use a virtual machine or should I install Linux (Ubuntu) on another partition of my internal HDD.

I will need to install quite a lot of stuff and I'm not sure whether my 4GB of RAM will be enough to run Ubuntu on top of Snow Leopard using a virtual machine. I will need to use another old computer or my parent's desktop for loading to compiled files onto the robot (my IR Tranceiver has a RS 232 connector). I have another old laptop which we commonly use as a 'tryout' computer, but for the most part I want my MacBook to be the computer I use because I cannot take that old (and really heavy) laptop with barely working batteries and super-laggy Win XP to school, where I will do a great deal of the work. So I definitely want Linux on my mac.The partition can be small, I will only need about 15-20GB of space (including the Linux).

Intel Mac :: Downloading Videos Using Real Player?

Apr 23, 2012

Im trying to download videos from youtube and other websites. I downloaded the real player from the real.com website.

In windows, if we wish to download, we move thw cursor to the video and a small tab pops up saying "Download". We click on it, it downloads.

Now in Mac, there is a add on called download manager for real player.

I watched a few vieods over the youtube, to guide myself. Instructions were to open real player and download manager.

Then open the link in safari or firefox where your video is and play it, once the video starts streaming, it should appear in the download manager, and i should be able to download it.

But when i follow all these procedures, the video is not appearing in the download manager.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Which One Is The *real* Hard Disk Space

Apr 28, 2012

New computer as graduation present from parents, I'm so excited yayayay, blah blah blah. 17-inch MacBook Pro, newest version, running 10.7.3. It's so shiny and everything. Etc Was checking on hard disk space to make sure I wasn't going crazy copying over all my music and etc. But the number given by a simple ⌘I on the HD was... suspiciously low.

I know ~/Music, ~/Pictures and ~/Desktop add up to about 120 GB alone, and it seemed implausible that /Applications, /Library and everything else would be so small in comparison. System Profiler confirmed this, suggesting total hard disk space used was closer to 200 GB: But this breakdown really doesn't help me much—file type is a lot less informative than where those files actually are. And I also found myself seriously doubting that there was nothing on my computer that wasn't audio, movies, photos, apps or backups.

[code]...

And got a third answer. One that seems to be the most accurate of the three, but I have to admit I'm easily swayed by computer things in monotype with lots of /s and ~s flying around So what is actually going on here and why doesn't my computer seem to know how much hard disk space it actually has free—if such a concept even exists anymore in the brave new lionworld?
