OS X :: How To Get A Documents Folder With The Real Icon Back
Aug 22, 2009
Long story short, I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall OS X. All of my stuff was backed up on time capsule, so the first thing I chose to restore was my documents folder.

I didn't put the my documents folder in the trash can and empty the trash. I accidentally took it off the dock, so I went into Macintosh HD in order to put it back on the dock. I went under the "my places" tab and clicked and dragged the my documents tab, but I accidentally let go of the icon before it got to the dock and it disappeared. It was showing the little crumbled up piece of paper icon before it disappeared. So I don't know how to get the my documents folder back. It isn't anywhere on my desktop and it isn't in the Macintosh HD under the "my places" tab. I also don't know how to access the documents that were in there.

I moved my documents folder to my desktop and it disappeared and then i found another folder for my documents and moved it to my dock. And then a icon for my documents ended up on my desktop. When I delete the documents folder on my desktop the format for all my .rar files change to .vlc format. And if I keep the documents on my desktop the files are alright and I'm still able to use it. I tried changing the type of format but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know what I can do to delete the documents folder off of my desktop and keep the format the same??

I just noticed that the icon for my Applications folder has been replaced with an icon for a different folder. (I was adding new icons to some folders the other day and apparently wasn't watching what I was doing closely enough.) how can I restore the Application folder icon back to its original state?

I can't risk data storage in the clouds due to the possibility (however remote) that someone's personal info might get compromised. Nor can I risk the cloud being down and not being able to access files/date when needed (which can sometimes be at the strangest of times).I have several iMacs integrated wirelessly. Every time we (I) update a doc, it needs to be manually transferred to other computers for staff who will need it. That's no big deal. What is worrisome is if a recent version of a doc were to get corrupted due to a HD failure, a corruption on an iMac, or whatever else. We all have TM and Super Duper clones that are scheduled regularly. What I'd like to be able to do is simultaneously have docs backed up on an external in real time, as they are saved on an internal.Unless I'm missing something I can't find, it seems the only way to do this is to save to the HD, and then save to an external. That seems like a lot of manual redundancy, and invites forgetfulness. So all being said, is there an Apple Script out there anyone is aware of that would tell the iMac to automatically save a copy of every file that is modified to an external, so that the external is a "current" version of the internal for data retrieval purposes?

How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.

I'm an idiot, pleased to meet you.I had 2 external drives connected to my Macbook Pro, both had time machine back ups on...I meant to delete one of these but deleted the wrong one, and dragged it into Trash. On realising my mistake I tried to drag it back out of Trash, as you would normally but after "preparing to copy" for four hours it told me the drive was full...It's a 500gb drive, and the Time Machine back up is the only thing on it, so presumably it's just trying to copy itself when the back up is still present on the drive, albeit in the Trash.

I recently downloaded Amazon's Kindle for my Mac and it automatically installed a content folder in my Documents folder along with my other folders. Now, I like to keep my Documents folder neatly organized and this My Kindle Content folder kind of messes things up a bit - I really don't like seeing this folder in my Documents folder. question: Does anyone know how to move this folder to another location? I've tried to browse the Kindle app, but I haven't found any obvious way to move it. However, I may have overlooked it. Also, I have tried to browse the Forums to see if someone else asked this question already - no luck yet. Has anyone out there had the same problem? If so, is there a way to move the My Kindle Content folder without messing things up?

I've changed the icon for my "documents" folder, but the change did not take effect on my "documents" icon in my dock. I removed it from the dock, and dragged the "documents" folder with the new icon into the dock, but it just shows a generic blue folder. I logged off, and logged back in, but I still only see a generic blue folder.

basically I'd like the documents folder in home to go straight to Macintosh HD 2.2 (which is my new 'documents' folder)
I've seen terminal commands that kinda do this, can it be done if so how?
A quick google didn't find me anything (although didn't try THAT hard )

I am new to Mac and I was wondering how I could create a folder within my documents on the mac os.
I recently changed from Windows to Mac and Its a bit of a learning curve.
I really liked the fact that I could store folders within my documents on Windows
Ex. I could open my documents, and open my school folder which had all of my school info.
How can i do this on Mac ?

I've just recently set it up on my Mac that all of my documents that would normally be in the Documents folder are now on my iDisk, in another folder named Documents. I've created a local copy of my iDisk so that my stuff is always in sync. However, just to make it easier on myself, what I would like to do is delete the (now empty) Documents folder in my Home folder, and replace it with an alias for the local iDisk documents folder. That way, I can still go into the Home folder as usual, but the Documents folder there will just point me directly to the local iDisk location. However, OS X isn't letting me do that - I can't delete the Documents folder to replace it.

I have an iBook G4 that is running OS 10.4.11.
Today, I was attempting to copy my documents folder onto my external hard-drive. I had Finder open and tried to move the icon representing documents (on the lower left sidebar) to the icon representing my hard-drive (upper left sidebar). The documents folder disappeared off of the left sidebar, but was not moved onto the drive.
I know the folder has not been deleted, as I am still able to open documents from it in word. However, I can't find the folder, and I'd like to return it to the sidebar. I have tried going Finder>Preferences>Sidebar, but there is no option to add the documents folder. How can I get it back?

The other day, I was using a disk inventory program to delete some of my unwanted files and folders, and I accidentally deleted my Documents folder. It's now in the Trash. How do I restore it? I tried just dragging the folder back to the sidebar, but it doesn't show up the same. The icon in the sidebar shows as a regular folder instead of the pencil and paper that it originally had. Also, if I right-click it and click "Open Enclosing Folder," the Trash opens again, indicating that it's still in the Trash.
How can I restore my Documents folder/alias to its original state?

I'm not tech savy at all, so I need any advice people might have about this. A couple of hours ago all the files in my Documents folder disappeared. The folder is there, but only two documents are in it (the two I was working on today).
I can't find any of my files by searching in the finder window. I have no idea where to start on this. I haven't backed up any of my files because clearly I was operating under the misconception that losing all of my documents all at once could never happen to me.

I formatted my Boot Camp partition to be FAT32 specifically so I would have access to the My Documents folder on the Windows side, but Leopard has now inexplicably locked that folder, preventing me from saving to that folder. I cannot un-lock from either the Mac or Windows side.
