I'm looking for a good setup on my iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz, 1 GB memory) to watch live TV. I was thinking of getting a TV for my home office, but I really don't have a lot of room, so I'd like to look at using my Mac. I don't need to have a recorder, but it could come in handy, especially if I were able to transfer them to my iPhone. I haven't done a lot of research.

Last week i stayed at a hotel in Birmingham (UK) and in each of the rooms they had iMacs.
You could watch TV or use it as a regular Mac.
When you turned it on, there was a choice: TV or Computer.

I'm using it as a media centre to play music, photos, movies etc and most importantly to watch catch up tv. Unfortunately I can't watch bbc iplayer, itv or channel four on demand. Each time I load a video it simply stalls at the beginning (except itv which just rotates through adverts). Now, I'm sure you need some info. I've installed the latest version of flash and it seems to be working, I'm using safari and this is a mac os x 10.5.8. I've been trying to fix it for over 3 hours now and I'm losing the lot.

I can watch movies from Netflix on our Mac book. But when I plug the computer into my TVs hdmi port I get sound but no picture. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard.Before the upgrade, whenever I plugged the mac into the hdmi port the computer's desktop would appear on the TV; now I get nothing. What am I doing wrong?

1. Is my iMac even able to support dual monitors?
2. If so how would I go about this?
3. Will just any monitor work or has to be a certain type?
So for about the same cash, you can buy an 27" iMac+iPad or get a 15" MBP. I'm deliberating between the two options for my next setup. If the iPad had flash support, I would be all over the imac+ipad combo because that would mean i can watch hulu on the ipad
View 11 Replies View RelatedI play movies stored on my iMac through my speaker system and HDTV using a Mini Display to HDMI cable plugged into my reciever. I'm currently piecing together a 5.1 seperates system but currently only have the front left, front right and centre speakers (3.0). I've played around to try and get the iMac to output though all three speakers but the audio only comes through the left and right channels and ignores the centre speaker completely. Even when I set the output in the 'Audio MIDI Setup' to 5.1 it still doesn't recognise a centre channel.Stereo output is fine but it would be nice to get the centre speaker in use rather than just sitting there in silence.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a creative 5.1 speaker setup and just recently found my old sound blaster external card from my PC from years ago. I went on the creative website to try and download drivers for it and their weren't any (surprise, surprise). So I've been trying to figure out how to use my speaker setup so I can watch movies from iTunes in 5.1 surround sound. When I plug in the card through USB the sound tab in the system preferences reads it as the SB Live! card (which it is).
Then when I go to the Audio MIDI Setup, it also reads the card and the speakers I have connected to it. When I go the configure speakers tab, it shows them and all when I click on them to test them, it shoots out noise through each speaker. But when I go back to iTunes and enable surround sound in a movie, nothing happens. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there any software I can download so I can use my speakers?
How can I setup my iMac so I can connect to it's hard drive, files, etc over the internet? I'd like to connect to my iMac at home from my macbook while not at home. I'm familiar with connecting to my iMac from the "shared" section in the finder while i'm at home and in my home DSL network, but how would this work if I'm outside of my home DSL network?

I need to get rid of it, but I want to make sure it is cleared of all my data first. Maintaining functionality would be nice so that I can try to sell it. There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I've looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
1.I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
2.Would you do it differently or not at all about moving the home folder? I saw some posts about moving the entire home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected folders withing the home folder to take advantage of speed of SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document, music, iphoto, download, etc.) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website (**is this the same as creating an alias?):

sudo rm -rf Documents
sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
3.I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
4.My main question and here is where I'm not sure what's best?
I want to speed up photoshop as much as possible? Should I make a partition on the internal HDD for a scartch disk? If so, how big? Is there a benefit to partitioning for scratch disc use? Should I not partition HDD and use for data and scratch? Any other way? I wish apple had a how to maximize use of the imac with HDD and SSD page!
I am awaiting my new iMac to arrive and have a question about my current speaker set up and if it will be compatible with my new iMac. The speakers are the 5.1 set and have 3 coloured connectors which connect to the back in my sound card. However, looking at the back of the new iMac, I see no connection for these 3 cables.

I've introduced them to iTunes and they are learning how to buy music, but naturally the internal speakers aren't very good (although they are better than I thought they would be). Here's my idea on a setup when I move into my garage. Xbox 360 connected to iMac 27" with a Kanex XD HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adaptor. A FreeView box also connected via HDMI though the Kanex XD adaptor using a HDMI switch. Or instead of the FreeView box I might get an EyeTV TV Tuner so I can use the new app to watch live tv on my iPhone.
Here's my other idea...
Mac Mini connected to my 42" Samsung HD monitor via HDMI
Xbox 360 also connected to the monitor with HDMI
A FreeView box also connected via HDMI to the monitor with a HDMI switch to change between the three.
I suppose it depends on screen size at the end of the day.
