OS X :: Setup IMac - Connect To HD / Files Over Internet?
Feb 2, 2009
How can I setup my iMac so I can connect to it's hard drive, files, etc over the internet? I'd like to connect to my iMac at home from my macbook while not at home. I'm familiar with connecting to my iMac from the "shared" section in the finder while i'm at home and in my home DSL network, but how would this work if I'm outside of my home DSL network?

After more than 5 years of having to constantly reboot my router because of lost connections to the Internet, I thought it would be time for a change. So I purchased a new Netgear router that works great with my mobile devices, including a PC notebook I have on my home network. (I should note that while all the other devices on my home network would lose their connection, the iMac somehow never did.)
However, when it came time to connect my iMac G4 I ran into some trouble. The iMac recognizes the new router and the WiFi signal strength is perfect, but I was unable to connect to the Internet. I opened the Network utility in Preferences to try to check the settings, and the following error message appeared:
<<Your network settings have been changed by another application.>>
What happens is, even though I click OK to clear the message, it keeps on reappearing on an endless loop; the only way out is to Force Quit the Network utility. Although this problem occurred with my older router, I was still able to connect to the Web; now I can't.
Info:
iMac (Flat Panel 2003), Mac OS X (10.4.11), Airport card installed.

My mother-in-law has an old Blueberry iMac which works ok except it won't connect to the internet/LAN. It is the computer, because the cable that used to connect the iMac to the internet is currently connected to a different computer and it works perfectly. The iMac runs Mac OSX 10.3.9. Has something died inside the iMac?

Daughters imac desktop upstairs has always had a weak connection (takes a few times to get started) but has been used this way for 3 years.
Of late she cannot get connected unless she brings it down to next to the router, and often dosen't work unless she plugs in the ethernet cable.

My wireless connection from my iMac to my AT&T router was working fine. Recently my 27" iMac (using Snow Leopard 10.6.8) cannot connect to the internet. The IP automatically getting assigned (using DHCP) is 169.254.21.210.The AT&T router is also connected to a Windows 7 PC and that is connecting to the internet without an issue. The IP that should be getting asigned is: 192.168.I am typing this "issue" using my daughters Mac Book Pro which is next to the iMac that has the connection issue. Obviously the Mac Book Pro is working fine. Shouldn't be a location issue. Also have used 2 other Mac Book Pros successfully as well as a Windows laptop from work. All work fine. Just the iMac is not working. Have setup the network connection again to no avail. I have used the Network "Assist me" option with no success.I also connected an Airport Extreme Base Station to the AT&T router with hopes of connecting. The iMac sees the Base Station (and also the AT&T router) but fails to connect to my ISP.Does anone have some experience in this area? Why is the Mac assigning a 169.254... ip address?

I have an iMac Intel Core2duo, 10.4.11 and I've just got a white macbook 10.6 which has a firewire slot. I have no idea how to transfer files from my iMac to the mb - can you help, please? I have not yet started the mb, in case I can use the setup assistant to migrate files.
so I'd be glad if someone can tell me [a] HOW to transfer files, [b] HOW to transfer iPhoto, [c] HOW to transfer iTunes and if I need to buy a cable, then what to look for.

My father in law had a power failure at the house, and since then, he cannot connect to the internet via DSL Modem connected via ethernet cable. Being that he is 1000 miles away, I am trying to diagnose via phone. System Info: Imac 17", purchased new around 2006- Intel chip, running Tiger OS
Symptoms:
- Cannot connect via ethernet
- When searching system profiler, "Built-in Ethernet" shows up, but no MAC address
- In Network settings, he can see the various connection ports, but cannot check the box on "Built-in Ethernet" to turn the port on... won't let him.
- Wireless is not an option, I don't want to be 24/7 tech support
Diagnosis? I am thinking that the power surge may have fried the ethernet port on the motherboard.
Repair Solution: Planning on picking up the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. I know it doesn't have the correct drivers to run on Tiger, but found a driver online that claims it allows use of the usb adapter on Panther on up.
Questions - Does this sound like a fried ethernet port? Any other easy diagnostic tests I can do? Does the USB adapter sounds like a decent solution?

One fine day, my iMac running Mavericks 10.9.2 has stopped connecting to internet over WiFi. it is self assigning an IP to itself and refuses to do a DHCP handshake with my router. My other wifi devices can connect to this network without any issues. So us the same iMac when it runs Windows 8.1 on the boot camp partition. I have tried the following fixes, but to no avail:
1. Delete the location
2. Delete networks
3. Reset DHCP
4. Restore Mac to a previous restore point where it used to connect to internet without any issues.

i can't connect to the internet via my ethernet cable, but this is a weird case. What's weird about it is that all my settings are O.K. (appletalk on and set to ethernet, tcp/ip set to ethernet, dhcp) and my iMac is recieving a 192 address, but it still can't connect to the internet. The dhcp settings are correct, because they are the same settings used on all my other devices (at least those that use internet anyway), and they all connect to the internet just fine. Whether via an ethernet cable, or Wi-Fi.

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Thanks for the help everyone.

currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).
Question:
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?
2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,

I have a blackbook (intel core 2 duo) and I can connect to my landlord's wireless network (they have a netgear wgt624) but I can't actually use the web (Safari or Firefox will just "think"). I've tested the diagnostics and it confirms that my mac can connect to the network, but it cannot connect to the internet. The network uses WPA personal and it has a 19-aphanumeric passphrase.
*Also - would it be possible for me to extend the wireless range (and make it possible to browse the web) if I used my own 2wire wireless modem to connect to the netgear wgt624?

She is currently in Tanzania, so I am trying to help her over the phone. It is a K3565-z Vodacom Internet dongle, and it has worked perfectly fine for the last 2 months. There are only Windows files on the USB stick now, and no internet connection. If she goes to the Network settings she can see the modem.

I currently own a Macbook I purchased in January 2009. A few days ago I installed Boot Camp Agent so I could use it to play certain games I could not run using Parallels. I downloaded Boot Camp following the directions it comes with. (Installed Windows XP Pro, then installed Mac OSX Leopard 10.5). Everything works fine except I cannot figure out how to use the wireless network established in my home.
On the Mac side, I can connect to the internet with the Airport fine, never have a problem on that side. When switched to the Windows side I have no wireless options. Though I can use the internet when using an ethernet cable connected directly to my router (Linksys WRT110). I have read soo many forum posts and nothing I have read has helped so far. When I go to Network Connections and Properties, I do not have a Wireless Network Connection tab.

How to I make sure that I have set up a secure internet connection on my macbook pro? Our internet has been running slower the past month or so and I want to be sure I have not left my internet unsecured for someone else to log on and use. When I check the "rainbow" at the top of my screen there are usually about 6 people listed and they all have a lock after their names. Our just has our last name with a checkmark. Does that mean it is secure?

Recently I purchased a Canon PIXMA MG5220 wireless printer. I have installed numerous printers, software, hardware etc on other comps as well as this one and have never had a problem... until now. I connected my printer to the internet access port (my home network) and everything went fine. But when I put in the canon disk to load the software and add the printer to my comp, I click on setup, it prompts me for my user pw to allow install. I do that and when I hit ok, nothing happens...
No other window loads or anything. It's like there is nothing on it after the pw prompt. I tried it on a diff comp (windows based PC) and it worked fine... why wont it load on my iMac? Very confused. Also, I turned off my firewall thinking that would help, but it did not... any help is appreciated.

I recently installed XP with bootcamp on my MacBook Pro. The big problem I'm having is that the internal speakers on my computer don't have sound coming out of them. (When I'm on windows) The volume control on my keyboard doesn't do anything, either. When I go to find my sound control, to make sure it's not muted or anything, I find that I can't even edit the sound controls. It says I don't have a device that can output sound, even though my internal speakers work fine on my mac desktop. It can't seem to find my internal speakers, when I try setting up a new device. I'm having a lot of trouble setting up internet on the XP as well, I just don't understand how to do it. (I've used mac all my life, I am really new to windows.) Basically, I have a wireless internet connection, I've got the router downstairs, and the information is handy. But I just don't know how to set it up, and I don't know what type of internet connection I want.

What I need to do is an extension of Parental Controls. The main difference is I want to do WEEKLY time allocation/restrictions, not daily. I want to give the kids (for exmaple) 10 hours a week for internet access. I will set blocks of time up that will bar access from 11PM until 7 AM but within the open time, they will have 10 hours. Once that 10 hours is used, they are locked out. There are several tools that seem to do variations of this, mainly limit the # of hours per day.... this will not work. I have looked at Content Barrier, NetNanny Safe, Eyes, and a few others... There are a couple on the Windows side but they do not have a Mac version.
