Hardware :: Airport Extreme Failed Security Test - Can I Change Any Settings To Make Network More Secure
Aug 27, 2010
I just purchased an Airport Extreme (802.11n) to replace my old Linksys router (so that I can have wifi). After I have everything installed, I went to Symantec's Security Check page and ShieldsUP! page to make sure my connection is secure.
[URL]
To my horror, Symantec says that one of my ports is OPEN (ICMP Ping), while all others are CLOSED. In my limited understanding, this is definitely not the most desirable situation--not as good as my old Linksys, whose ports are all reported as STEALTH. ShieldsUP! just said that I failed because of the open ICMP port.
My questions are:
1. Is this the best Airport Extreme can do?
2. Am I safe?
3. Can I change any settings to make my network more secure?
I can't find much info from Apples' documentation and the Support website.

i recently bought an Airport Express, and i finally took it out of its box after i purchased my new stereo. I connected the audio cable to the stereo and the airport unit and plugged it into an outlet. I opened up airport utility on my mac, AX appeared and i configured it to "join a wireless network". After completing the remaining steps, i updated it.. and waited for it to restart. Now here's my problem. It comes up with an error telling me it couldn't find the device after restarting. I have Verizon FiOS as my provider.. and I know that airport express has a history of trouble with the Actiontec router. Is there anything i can do with my current equipment to get this thing to work? I do not need to extend the network.. only join to use airtunes and print wirelessly... Also, my Actiontec router and FiOS connection are through my crappy dell pc downstairs, while i am using my 24" iMac upstairs in my bedroom trying to connect this. Should i change my router's settings?

I want to buy an Airport Express to connect to my university's wired network so I can have a wireless connection, use my speakers wirelessly, and print wirelessly. However, as far as I can tell, there is no way to password-protect the printer sharing feature, meaning that my printer would be free to take print jobs from anyone on my building's network. Can anyone confirm this or set me straight?

My Airport wireless security setting is currently on "WPA/WPA2 personal." "WPA2 personal" is another option. Which is the more secure choice?

I can't seem to find the option under System Preferences/Sharing/Internet that allows me to set my Aiport Extreme in my iMac for WPA/WPA2 security for internet sharing. Am I missing an update? Software update check shows all software current. Is there a download I'm missing?

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

I am using a Ibook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.3 Tiger with up to date upgrades. I have been facing this problem for a month now and I have tried every possible option. It was working very fine until then for past 5 months. Problem: "There was an error joining the airport network". The problem comes only when I make my network secure. If I make it open, it works fine. I don't want to keep my network open and unsecure, so the problem keeps bothering me.
Things I have tried.
1. I have tried removing all the old passwords in the keychain and deleting all the previous networks it remembered. no difference, same error.
2. I have tried several other things suggested in different forums and articles, nothing really gave any results.
3. I finally got my OS reloaded with erase and Install option.. still the same error message comes. I have my Interferece robustness on and other PC computer connected to the same network works fine. I have even tried changing the router from Netgear to Linksys, nothing really worked.

Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.

I have recently begun to use a fios router for my home network. When originally set up by fios they set the security to wep, and I set my network prefences as such. Since then I have changed the router to wpa security My network prefences still shows that wep encryption is being used. It still connects to the net but I can't figure out how to change it to reflect wpa security. Or since I am connecting to the net , is it necessary.
Info:iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

OK, so after several hours of swearing and cursing, i have my new airport extreme sitting behind my dsl modem now working and connected to the internet.
With my older linksys router, I had the dsl modem set to 'bridge' PPP location mode. That didn't work with the airport extreme it seems and nor did having the PPP on the modem. So, i selected 'PPP on the computer' PPP location mode and that seemed to do the trick.
So, question is -
- why doesn't 'bridge' mode work with the apple extreme? does it, and i'm not doing it right?
- is 'ppp on the computer' ok and any reason to not want this - any degradation in network performance etc?

I have just updated my Adobe Reader and now I can't download and open pdf files anymore.
I tried going through the preferences in Reader, but it says that the setting is tied in with 'security administration' settings on Mac OS X.
I have not actually changed anything in the settings so am assuming that this is something to do with the most recent update to either Adobe Reader or OS X security.
Info:
MacBook Pro

I've owned a Netgear and a D-Link route before and with those, you could access all your router settings and statuses over the internet. The Login would usuallly be the ip address and the password would be one of your choice. I can't seem to find any settings to enable this on my Airport Extreme.

I need up figure out how to set up forwarding for a few programs I use, however, the Mac I'm using at the moment will be replaced soon with a new one. So I'd like to know if port forwarding settings are saved on the Airport Extreme or the Mac connected to it. If it's saved on the Mac, then I would just wait till I get my replacement to set up port forwarding.

I recently got a PowerPC G4 from a family member and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5. I did this without the Airport Extreme card installed. After installation I put the card in, and after booting up I thought the card would be recognized. I was wrong. Any suggestions besides that the card might be bad, that I can do to fix this? The card works on other machines.

I recently replaced my aging linksys G router with an Airport extreme. I have an HP 2605dn printer connected to it via ethernet. When I set this up with the old router everything worked great, printer showed up in OSX and added with a couple of clicks. Now that I have moved to the airport I cannot find the printer at all from OSX on either my MacBook Pro with 10.6 or my Powerbook with 10.5. However all of the Windows 7 machines I have in the house see it and print fine. I feel like I'm missing something very simple and help would be amazing.

My home network is using a Netgear wireless router, which is just used for sharing the internet. I was wondering if Airport Extremes could be placed in another room to connect to a USB hard drive and share it, as well as extending the internet from my Netgear wireless?

I already have an airport extreme to go along with my new alum macbook. But my wife's pc laptop and my iphone are only G wireless and not N so when they are in use it slows the network way down. If I bought an airport express could I link them together on the same network (to share printer and HD on the extreme) and have one handle the N traffic and one handle the G traffic?

My university says the ethernet network that they supply in uni halls of accomodation does not allow wireless devices, surely they can't make it so that you cant use an airport extreme or some other device to make the wired network in to a wireless one. The connection is through a proxy and uses PEAP. They also use 802.11X authentication. How can i use my airport extreme in my room so i can use my laptop wirelessly?

I just bought an Airport Extreme.I have two desktops (wired) and a laptop (wireless). They all can connect to the internet fine (wired and wirelessly respectively). But there is no network (file sharing, itunes sharing, etc.)
I was under the impression that the difference between the AP extreme and AP express was that the extreme is also a router (capable of creating a network).

I want to test the range of an AE base station at a theatre that I'm installing wi-fi for. I'm wi-fi challenged, so the AE was my choice when setting up my home network. I may need to extend the theatre's network with an Airport Express, but want to test the range of it with my AE base station from home. (Got that?) [oh, and it's a theatre I work for and am installing all sorts of fun goodies. I'm good with stuff but wifi makes me corky thatcher. -ed]Since I'm wi-fi challenged, will it totally mess up my settings on my home network if I try to use it at the theatre? If it will, then I'll just buy a fresh one for the theatre and see after that if I need an express. I'd just like to run to the apple store once, not twice

I'm not very well versed in networking or IP stuff, but maybe someone can help me. I have an airport extreme running the wireless network in my house. I know my IP number (it changes, but I'm switching to a static #). Is there a way I can access my network over the internet through the airport extreme? I have a mini-server device running on my network that utilizes port 80 and I'm sure there's some way to read that over the internet. (if I'm using the wireless network, I use address http://10.0.1.3/webpage.html to view) Is there a way to view that address from the internet? And lastly, if am I opening up a can of security worms if I try this?

This is driving me insane. Just got a new Centrino laptop (obviously with wireless), but it refuses to see the AirPort network. I have reset the base station so there is no encryption of anykind, but still no joy.
Is there anything that needs to be set on the AirPort for this to work?

I can't seem to get my airport express to extend the guest network from my new airport extreme. It will extend the private network but the guest network doesn't show up in the list under airport utility. Is there anyway to extend the internet only except to one computer which needs to share a printer back to the original extreme?

I finally convinced a friend to get a Mac and bragged about how easy everything works. He got a new iMac (loves it!) and signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. Now there is a new MacBook in the house so I explained that all he would need is the AirPort Express in order to share the internet wirelessly for both Mac's. I went to set it up and I screwed everything up, after hours of work I not only couldn't get the Express working, I had to leave him without even ethernet internet. That's really all the info about his setup I have at the moment. So I came home to examine my own setup which is very similar: we both have the same Comcast modem (Arris TM502G) except I have an AEBS and he has a Express.
So I came home to examine my setup, it has been a while since I set mine up but its been flawless wirelessly (I never used the ethernet before). So, I plugged a ethernet cable in to the AEBS and connected my MBP. Works great. So I want to try to cut out the AEBS and just connect via ethernet from my MBP to the cable modem, that's where I start getting IP address problems. When an ethernet cable is connected to the AEBS my IP address is 10.0.1.12 and works fine. When I cut out the AEBS and try to run ethernet directly from my modem to my computer my IP Address changes to 169.254.181.6 and I get an error message saying that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect" and sure enough, I can't. Network Diagnostics tells me to configure via DHCP and restart the modem, still no luck. As I was searching tonight I came upon some discussion about Comcast limiting MAC addresses or something?

Can the new Time Capsule be used as a stand alone router or do I have to connect it to my existing Sky router?
I believe people on here call it bridging.
Can I use Airport express with it to extend my network or will I still need the Extreme?
