View 2 RepliesI am using a Ibook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.3 Tiger with up to date upgrades. I have been facing this problem for a month now and I have tried every possible option. It was working very fine until then for past 5 months. Problem: "There was an error joining the airport network". The problem comes only when I make my network secure. If I make it open, it works fine. I don't want to keep my network open and unsecure, so the problem keeps bothering me.
Things I have tried.
1. I have tried removing all the old passwords in the keychain and deleting all the previous networks it remembered. no difference, same error.
2. I have tried several other things suggested in different forums and articles, nothing really gave any results.
3. I finally got my OS reloaded with erase and Install option.. still the same error message comes. I have my Interferece robustness on and other PC computer connected to the same network works fine. I have even tried changing the router from Netgear to Linksys, nothing really worked.
I just purchased an Airport Extreme (802.11n) to replace my old Linksys router (so that I can have wifi). After I have everything installed, I went to Symantec's Security Check page and ShieldsUP! page to make sure my connection is secure.
[URL]
To my horror, Symantec says that one of my ports is OPEN (ICMP Ping), while all others are CLOSED. In my limited understanding, this is definitely not the most desirable situation--not as good as my old Linksys, whose ports are all reported as STEALTH. ShieldsUP! just said that I failed because of the open ICMP port.
My questions are:
1. Is this the best Airport Extreme can do?
2. Am I safe?
3. Can I change any settings to make my network more secure?
I can't find much info from Apples' documentation and the Support website.
I am not currently a Mac user but I am using an Airport to connect to the internet using my Gateway laptop. My question is this - my son (who is a Mac user) left his airport behind when he left home, and it works great with my Gateway. However, it is unsecured and I can't figure out how to secure it. Do I need him to do this from his Mac?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to buy an Airport Express to connect to my university's wired network so I can have a wireless connection, use my speakers wirelessly, and print wirelessly. However, as far as I can tell, there is no way to password-protect the printer sharing feature, meaning that my printer would be free to take print jobs from anyone on my building's network. Can anyone confirm this or set me straight?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm a new Mac user, and new to this forum, Just wanted to ask a quick question about connecting my new macbook to my TV.
I connected it up no probs and have sound aswell - but can I shut my Laptop lid, and have access to the computer? I have movies in iTunes that I want to watch, whilst they are displayed perfectly on my TV, my laptop is kinda in the way and distracting whilst watching the TV.
Is there an option in Settings where I can close the laptop up, but still have it running, rather than going to sleep?
I own a bluetooth mighty mouse and keyboard so I will still be able to control the macbook....I just want to shut the lid whilst watching films, etc.
I have a Bluetooth mouse that I use with my MacBook Pro.
In Tiger & Leopard, I was able to set my Mac so that it disabled the trackpad from use when the Bluetooth mouse was connected. I just noticed that that setting has been undone and I can't seem to find the preference to set that setting.
Anything? Thoughts? This obviously isn't a crisis, I'm just curious if they've moved the preference someplace else... or something.
Why my macbook pro OSX 10.5.8 does not have the overscan option in the Display settings? I have seen screen shots of the feature - mine in not there.

I have a wireless router with 2 devices connected via ethernet (PC and XBOX 360) and 3 devices connected wirelessley (Imac, macbook, iphone and printer). This morning I was using my imac and all of a sudden I got a message saying another device is using my IP address.
I tried restarting the router, the computer airport but nothing worked. The only other device on at this point was the macbook which received the same message. I assigned a manual address to the imac via the advanced settings in airport but how do I fix this so that IP addresses are assigned automatically?
I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?
I have a primary time capsule, and then I have it extended via another airport extreme. I've noticed that websites are slow to load, but I'm able to sustain pretty fast download speeds. I'm guessing this might be a DNS issue. I've tried google public DNS and I still can't seem to get this thing to fly. A related issue is more of a question. Do I need to change DNS settings on the airport that merely extends the first time capsule? It defaults to 10.0.0.1, the IP address of the router and I'm thinking that's probably what's best as it does the DNS resolution there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOK, so after several hours of swearing and cursing, i have my new airport extreme sitting behind my dsl modem now working and connected to the internet.
With my older linksys router, I had the dsl modem set to 'bridge' PPP location mode. That didn't work with the airport extreme it seems and nor did having the PPP on the modem. So, i selected 'PPP on the computer' PPP location mode and that seemed to do the trick.
So, question is -
- why doesn't 'bridge' mode work with the apple extreme? does it, and i'm not doing it right?
- is 'ppp on the computer' ok and any reason to not want this - any degradation in network performance etc?
I want to use AirPort Express to send iTunes to my stereo. I get my internet connection from a wireless modem (Telus is my ISP). I can establish a new network between my MacBook and my AirPort Express which will work (iTunes comes out of my stereo), but then I cannot access my wireless network and get the internet (my Mac will only allow one network connection at a time); and I can connect an ethernet cable from my the WAN port on my wireless modem to my AirPort Express, which will also work. But I cannot get my AirPort Express to join my existing wireless network. Telus tells me this won't work because they won't allow another network to join their network. I'm guessing this would be a Telus Firewall issue, but when I look at the Firewall settings Telus provides,
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently moved to a new place. At my old apartment I had my express plugged in, never constantly unplugged it or anything and it worked fine.
I move into my new place and now my express wont work. I did a factory reset, holding the reset while plugging it in, reconfigured it to extend my network as I use it to connect to xbox live.
Everything will work for about 2-3 minutes and have internet until the light goes solid yellow. It wont show up in the airport utility or anything. I look at it and it is shutoff while plugged in. No blinking light, no solid light just nothing.
I cant find any information on any other resets and I assumed factory was way to go after it wasnt working the first time.
I have NO idea what to do now. I assume its dead completely unless there is something im doing wrong.
I have had it for a little over a year. Not exactly sure when i bought it. I think I am within a month of the warranty expiring. This sucks. I dont have my proof of purchase or anything. But I am positive I bought it around this time.t does the normal start-up by blinking green then solid yellow while starting then it resets, "starts up" one more time then shuts off completely.
I have an Airport Base station. I need to reset this base station back to the factory defaults. I want to wipe away all settings.
First, how do I determine which kind of Base station that I have? The base station is white with two cat5 jacks, USB, and telephone jack. I think it is a dual port station. I don't know if this would a Graphite or Snow model.
Second, how do I reset the base station. Do I use the small reset button on the back of the unit? OR do I use Airport Base Utility software? If so, which version should I use? I am using OS 10.4.11.
Third, does anyone know of a good user manual for this particular model?
I just installed the Airport extreme wireless card on my emac, but I have run into some problems:
1)after installing the card, the mac took a very long time to start up, I tested to make sure it was the card: everytime I started it up without the card, it did the normal thing, but with the card, it took a long time
2)after finally starting up, nowhere can i find where/how to configure the wireless. When I go to configure the network, it has all options, but the airport card option is not usable.
I've owned a Netgear and a D-Link route before and with those, you could access all your router settings and statuses over the internet. The Login would usuallly be the ip address and the password would be one of your choice. I can't seem to find any settings to enable this on my Airport Extreme.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need up figure out how to set up forwarding for a few programs I use, however, the Mac I'm using at the moment will be replaced soon with a new one. So I'd like to know if port forwarding settings are saved on the Airport Extreme or the Mac connected to it. If it's saved on the Mac, then I would just wait till I get my replacement to set up port forwarding.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had my macbook pro for 4 years now with out any problems. However, a few weeks ago my airport stopped connecting for no reason. I have tried to reconnect through the network settings but it still won't work. However, if I am in the same room as my router then the airport will connect wirelessly to the internet. But as soon as I leave the room my internet signal will go out. I know its not a problem with my router because all the other computers in my house can recieve signal anywhere in the house.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust downloaded Lion, now the Airport wireless router keeps dropping the cable modem settings so I can't access the network, internet or WiFi. I have to repeatedly go back into System Preferences, Network, Assist Me, Network Diagnostics, choose the network port config, select WiFi, select my network and it restores all network settings and says "Internet connection appears to working correctly." This problem apparently happens whenever the computer goes to standby/sleep.

i recently bought an Airport Express, and i finally took it out of its box after i purchased my new stereo. I connected the audio cable to the stereo and the airport unit and plugged it into an outlet. I opened up airport utility on my mac, AX appeared and i configured it to "join a wireless network". After completing the remaining steps, i updated it.. and waited for it to restart. Now here's my problem. It comes up with an error telling me it couldn't find the device after restarting. I have Verizon FiOS as my provider.. and I know that airport express has a history of trouble with the Actiontec router. Is there anything i can do with my current equipment to get this thing to work? I do not need to extend the network.. only join to use airtunes and print wirelessly... Also, my Actiontec router and FiOS connection are through my crappy dell pc downstairs, while i am using my 24" iMac upstairs in my bedroom trying to connect this. Should i change my router's settings?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't find the paperwork for my password for my router, but have it saved under preferred networks. I was reading forums about how you could easily go into settings and "edit" the network, then click "show password" and the password would be there.
My problem: I click edit and my password (shown in dots) is grey along with the "show password" box. If I click in the password box the saved password disappears.
How do I get my "show password" box able to be checked?
I have a G5 Duel 2GHz Power PC, Recently I was losing the time, date and wireless settings so I assumed as my machine is now 4 years old the PRAM battery was up for renewal. This has now been replaced but I'm still losing my settings, not all the time but randomly, sometimes I lose my wireless key sometimes I lose time and date sometimes both, this can happen daily.
I have removed the (New) Battery and checked the voltage and it reads 3.6 Volts, I haven't checked this under load though, so presuming that the battery is OK, what else could cause this.. a failing System Board?
I have had my MacBook Pro now for a little over 2 yrs and I was very frustrated I could not change any print options in any application. I know that the Triangle button expands print options screen but when I do, I have only two print choices. It gave me Standard or Page Attributes in Office and any other App it is Standard and Last used settings. I can't print in Draft, Best or other setting because it does not even give them as a choice. I have two high end color photo printers, Canon i9900 and Epson Photo series and an old HP830 series. Any app I tried to print from and the same thing. I tried to capture the options on the choices but it would not grab that part of the image but here is my screen shot. I searched many forums and I still get the same answer so something else is not letting me change things so I figured best to ask since I am a 20 year win user now switched to Mac. Well right after I posted this question, my wife found the answer. I never though to check the application NAME in the print setting screen. Example, in the screenshot I am using Preview. I never thought to hit the up/down arrow next to the Preview label and wouldn't you know, that is were the quality and several other settings were. I felt pretty stupid that it took 2 years to figure this out but if I posted the answer maybe someone else will not have to take as long as I did to change their print quality!

I just have a question about how secure my mac is..
I use ethernet to connect to the internet with the DHCP configurations. My firewall is turned on and my sharing options off.
But I also have NetBarrier. The firewall option for this was set on:
Client, Local Server
Having it set up like this, do you know if someone could access my mac?
I am well aware that in practice, Mac OS X is vastly superior in terms of virus protection to Windows. What I am wondering is if this is solely due to the popularity of Windows, or if given an equal market share of Macs and equal number of equally skilled, equally determined hackers Macs would still come out as more secure.
Can anyone with more technical knowledge of the underlying OS architectures answer this question?
I was using my MBP when I noticed that the display (the built in one) looked a little washed out. To make sure my color profile was set to the correct one, I opened up the display panel in System Preferences. The moment I opened it, the display snapped back to its regular appearance. As far as I can tell, it goes into the washed out version after going to screensaver and coming back, and going into display prefs is the only way to restore it. Anyone seen this before or know how to keep it from doing this?
