I can't seem to find the option under System Preferences/Sharing/Internet that allows me to set my Aiport Extreme in my iMac for WPA/WPA2 security for internet sharing. Am I missing an update? Software update check shows all software current. Is there a download I'm missing?
View 9 RepliesBackground: I have a long background in computing and networking, but am new to the specific operation of the Apple Airport Extremes.
I have a network with an existing router in place that connects to the internet, and provides DHCP for the network. I want to add (potentially many) Airport Extremes to this network to provide two basic functions:
1) Wireless access to the existing network over a large office area (preferably on the same subnet as the existing, wired network, with the current router [NOT the AEs] providing DHCP services) and
2) Guest network access such that users joining the guest network can access the internet, but NOT any of the addresses on the main network.
I can find no way to do this trivially. It seems that if I set the AEs to BRIDGE mode, the option to set up a guest network disappears (perhaps reasonably so, since the AE would need to be able to manage the address range for the two networks).

I have an HP EX490 Mediasmart Server that I'm trying to get Remote Access to work with my Airport Extreme (N/Giga version). Unfortunately HP doesn't recommend the Airport Extreme for Remote Access use since it doesn't support UPnP. I followed one guy's steps to manually configure the port forwarding to get Remote Access to work, based upon comments it works for some and doesn't work for others. I've provided screenshots that match his instructions, and I was wondering if anyone has had luck and are there extra steps since I have the latest firmware on my Airport Extreme? I really don't feel like buying another wireless router if possible, but if I need to, any recommendations that has a USB port so I can print wireless with my current printer?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a guest account set up on my Airport Extreme. I'm trying to hook up a wireless gaming adapter (xbox) to a Slingbox. It's worked in the past with linksys routers that had no security. When I set up the airport, I set security by default, but I want to remove it from the guest account. I just can't find the way to configure the guest account.

It will list my network in the network list and will connect to other unsecured networks but not to mine. I use WPA2 security on the network.Alternatively, my Macbook Air, Mac Mini, iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii have no problems connecting.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just purchased an Airport Extreme (802.11n) to replace my old Linksys router (so that I can have wifi). After I have everything installed, I went to Symantec's Security Check page and ShieldsUP! page to make sure my connection is secure.

To my horror, Symantec says that one of my ports is OPEN (ICMP Ping), while all others are CLOSED. In my limited understanding, this is definitely not the most desirable situation--not as good as my old Linksys, whose ports are all reported as STEALTH. ShieldsUP! just said that I failed because of the open ICMP port.
My questions are:
1. Is this the best Airport Extreme can do?
2. Am I safe?
3. Can I change any settings to make my network more secure?
I can't find much info from Apples' documentation and the Support website.
With Airport Extreme you run your DSL to modem then LAN to Airport Extreme, is this correct?If so then is a standard wireless router a better option? what's the purpose of Airport Extreme?

Do I need to get the AEBS, or will an iMac work with my existing router? And I need to keep my 2WIRE router, so how would I hook up an AEBS to the 2WIRE router? I've heard that you have to set the AEBS to 'bridge' mode or something. Can you also give detailed instructions on how to set up the AEBS with the 2WIRE router?

This airport extreme sits next to a ps3 and an external network Hard drive (see model below). Basically, I want to be able to dump files from my imac into the other room on this Hardrive, whilst my Ps3 being able to access the Hardrive as usual. Unfrotunately, I can only get the ps3 or the airport extreme to connect to my hardrive through the USB slot. As the HD only has one USB slot, this means I can only use one at a time! Neither of the devices will see the Harddrive when it is plugged in by ethernet alone.. How can i make it so i can use the harddrive with my airport extreme AND my ps3 at the same time?

I have just installed an Airport Extreme Card in my G4 iMac. I can't get it to connect to my wireless network via a Linksys WRK54G router. When I enter in my network name, it doesn't recognize my wep password. I have two PCs running fine off this network.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI attached my Imac to the Airport and the printer to the Airport. It's a Canon Pixma MX700. The airport utility sees the printer but when I try to print, the Imac does not see the printer. I hardwired the Imac to the Airport because I assumed the connection speed woud be better. Could this be the problem? I am able to get on-line from my laptop PC so I know the thing is working. I have not tried to print from the laptop.

Since the reformat I have not been able to get the computer to connect to the Airport Extreme on my Time Machine. Now my Time Machine was set to WPA2 so I changed it to a straight WEP and the iMac can handle that but it keeps dropping the connection every 15 to 20 seconds. Can I get the iMac to use WPA2 and or how can I stop the iMac from rejected the Wi-Fi connection every few seconds? Â

Simple question: Of the new features in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station, which of these could become available to the old AirPort Extreme Base Station via a software/firmware update? I have to think that at least some of the new features don't actually require new hardware. Just trying to figure out if I want to shell out $179 for a new AEBS when my current AEBS works pretty well as it is.

Was getting 28-33mbps download speeds using speedtest.net to test now i'm getting only 4-6mbps. WTH!!! Also the transfer rate for backing up my macbook to the tc drive is ridiculous!!!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
I have previously time machine backups for two macbook pros on same drive. However, I connect the drive to the airport extreme and although I see the drives and the backups, I can not access the files over Airport Extreme.

I recently took a plunge and went for a gigabit fiberoptic line. However, my speeds are extremely slow. I am currently living in Japan and was provided with an NEC router. To this I've connected an Airport Express "N". I've set this up as my WDS main and I have another Airport Express "b/g" and this is setup as my WDS remote.
I don't have the latest equipment...running on wifi I have a PowerBook G4 and on Speedtest this is getting only 1mb/s or so. I have a PC connected directly to the router and this only gets about 6mb/s. It's a Compaq D510 (so, not the latest and greatest, but not ancient).
I have one of those "new" (well, mine's over a year old now) 13" aluminum-cased MacBooks (what is the official name for these anyways, Intel Core-Duo or something?... I digress). I am using the default/included 'AirPort' wireless thingy.
All I want to know is: How do I ensure that my AirPort is configured properly to access a 5 ghz wireless band? I just setup my wireless router to broadcast at 5 ghz and I want to make sure my MacBook is receiving at 5 ghz/optimal speed. So, what steps do I take to check this and/or configure it as such?

I want to avoid any conflicts with my old settings for my wireless network with my MBP. Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router. Â
I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty. I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error. Try again." Well, tried again and still no luck.Â
