Applications :: Moving Dock To Second Monitor?
May 16, 2010
I am looking for a way to move my dock to my second monitor but not my menu bar. Any thoughts? I don't want to arrange my second monitor below my first because that's confusing and messes up other things I have going on .

For some reason, my applications folder disappeared from the dock. I've tried to drag it back, next to the trash, but it won't settle there.

Since a few days something randomly appears in the dock for a split second. It doesn't stay on for enough time to really see what it is. I've tried to narrow it down but I couldn't find anything in the logs. All I know is that perceived by peripheral vision, it looks similar to the Console icon. I'd really like to know, since this behavior is quite suspicious. Is there an app recording the start of a new process? Alternatively I could make a screenshot every 125ms, but that's not really an elegant solution (plus an image of this icon). I haven't installed anything except Lyx and ProVoc recently.

and how do I stop it?
At first I thought I was seeing things so to be sure I purposely moved some app icons to the far left and low and behold about 30 or so minutes later it moved them almost all the way to the right.
I checked the dock settings and there doesn't seem to be a setting for this. I did a search on the forum already couldn't find anything. This is nothing TOO major but perhaps if I understood why it's doing it I might be willing to accept it.

I want to manually move the dock so it sits vertically and sits in the bottom right.
Is this possible?
Ive looked about on the google and all websites just seem to point towards left, right and bottom.

I have a problem with Safari especially. It keeps moving on my dock. I place it on the left and after a few seconds, it moves all the way to the right. I move it again where I want it and the same thing happens over and over.

I have been trying to figure out why my MBA seems to be so odd?
I am running 10.6.2 OSX and every time I try to move the icons around in the dock they either move place by themselves or delete themselves?
This is especially true with browser icons. For example I could have safari open and try to move the icon in the dock from the far right towards the left ..... It will do this and stay there for approx. 5 seconds and then return back to the far right.?
If I close the safari program the icon disappears from the dock. If I then try to drag the safari program into the dock from the applications folder, it will sit there for 5 seconds again and then just delete itself off the dock. This also happens to Skype, Firefox etc.....
I have tried everything from terminal / killall Dock ..... to deleting files from /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist etc with nothing working ??
// ps I do have a mobileme account with syncing function but have dock syncing turned off etc .... I have also tried re-booting multiple times after trying different routes and nothing has worked.
After trying nearly everything I can think of (even checking repairing in disk utility) I seem to have drawn a blank.
So I have enclosed a video of my desktop showing the problem of the disappearing icons. The weirdest part is its selective so some icons could stay when being dragged their while other disappear in a matter of seconds?

The strangest thing just happened to me on my MBP (10.6.3). I was messing around with the desktop, and I moved the dock to the left side of the screen, and I selected to have it hidden. From there, I went about what I was doing, and when I went back to my document (a Bean document) the keyboard was not responsive at all. I logged out, logged in, and things were fine. I activated the dock again, and then the keyboard went out again.
I logged out, logged in, moved the dock to its original position, and now things are fine. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I tried searching (not too thoroughly; this is kind of an urgent thing, and I didn't want the keyboard to go out on me again...), but I didn't see anything.

I leave the Acitvity Monitor running all the time with my CPU Usage as the dock icon. I like to see the cores working away. On my Quad MacPro at work I have four blue bars, on my old iMac C2D, MacBook etc. I have two bars. On my new i7 QC iMac I am only getting one bar. Any body have any thoughts on why this is? Has Apple changed the way the icon shows cores? Here is a link to a photo of my current dock on my i7. Current Dock Icon on i7 Quad Core

Very suddenly my dock has disappeared, (and occasionally reappears), and is now completely non-useable. Why..?
I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there. I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.
Any ideas what's going on?

I have a VGA HP monitor that runs at a native resolution of 1680x1050 at 60Hz. I plugged the Mini in, some weird resolution came up. 1680x1050 didn't show up in "Displays". I downloaded SwitchResX, and set it to 1680x1050 at 60Hz.The resolution is now set, but the monitor is very blurry, and the dock extends beyond the bottom of the screen.I really want to get this working. I'm not quite sure how SwitchResX works so could anybody give me a hand?

I bought a Belkin Thunderbolt 2 Express HD Dock and connected my Samsung monitor (1920 x 1080) using the Thunderbolt through connector. The monitor looks pink, sometimes green, whatever – not balanced color. When I connect the monitor directly to the Thunderbolt connector on the Mac, it's fine.

I've got an imac with a dead monitor and when i plug in an external monitor to get a display it only shows me the far corner of the desktop and I cannot access the dock or anything else to change settings. I need to change the monitor setting to MIRROR MODE which I believe is located in System Preferences but I cannot see anything with the current limited display.

Firstly, I'm a hardcore Mac fan and think that Time Machine was great idea. I know it does complete backup, including software and applications. My question is what is preventing the user from installing a time machine restore of another mac on a new one thus giving the new mac the same expensive software for free?
Example: I got a refurbished 2009 i7 iMac and would like to have Photoshop on my iMac too, it currently resides on my MBP. Could I simply do a time machine back up from my MBP to my iMac and get the application pro bono? Just used Migration Assistant and it worked flawlessly! Much better than using time machine.

Recently bought the 27" i5 and am in the process of moving all my stuff over. I currently have about 5500 songs in iTunes. Of that, about 3800 songs are in my iTunes folder and the rest are in a folder called MP3. The problem is my MP3 folder has a total of 4300 songs - the ones that are in iTunes as well as a bunch more. I don't have all the MP3 songs in iTunes as I don't listen to them often so I didn't want to bog down iTunes with extra music that I don't always listen to. The more music I added to iTunes on my PC the slower it ran.
Having said all this, everything I read about moving the library says to consolidate it before you move it. If I do that then I'm going to have about 1700 duplicate songs on my Mac. Is there a way to move the files as is and change a global path setting from /My documents/My Music/MP3/... to mac/music/mp3 so that all my music that was in the MP3 folder will point to the new location on the Mac? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

I'm picking up Snow Leopard and a new iPod classic on the 19th. I have currently got Leopard 10.5.8 and a precious song collection, which i backed up onto my external hd along with my photos. I want to move it back into SL with no issues - is a simple copy-back good enough?

There's not a 'consolidate library' option anymore. Should I just copy it over myself?

I'm running a Mac right now, but I'll be getting a new one this summer. I'm going to give my dad my current computer and get a new iMac, but I want to save as much time reorganizing my setup, so I'll be transferring via Firewire cable. I know how that works, but what I'm really curious about is whether or not I have to re-download all my applications.
Is is possible to just replace the application folder on the new computer with that of my current one (soon to be my father's)? I know that applications on a Mac are kind of like little bundles of information- the icons contain all the necessary code and whatnot (is it obvious I really don't know much about programming yet?), so can I just move the applications directly over, or do I have to re-download them all?
It's not a problem if I do have to re-download them, but to quote a literary character of old, "I would prefer not to." (10 awesome points for the first to tell me who said that)

I can't find a thread that addresses my particular problem, so I'm hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. I have a 100gb iTunes folder on my MacBook which I wish to transfer to my new iMac. Rather than simply copy it across to the iMac's HD, I would rather copy it to an external HD and then run iTunes from the external HD connected to my iMac. So my question is simply what is the best way to do this.
Also, can anyone recommend a great external HD which won't expire after 6 months?

I have purchased an external Hard drive to move my grandfather's iPhoto library from his iMac's internal to it (so that it can be accessed by both of my grandparent's accounts instead of just one since they share the same camera), and was wondering if moving it to the external would be enough of a back up or if it should be backed up again? The drive will be partitioned so that there is 400gb available for time machine and 100gb available for "everything else", like the iPhoto library for example. I partitioned it so that time machine backups don't squeeze the iPhoto library space down to 0. Is it nonsensical to have the library back up to the other partition as well since it is on the same drive, or would that in fact be a good idea?

With all the excitement around the $79 price of Aperture on the new mac app store, I'm thinking about getting it, but wondering if I can then ditch iPhoto? I looked at Apple's website about Aperture and see that it seems to be iPhoto+ with all the features of iPhoto plus more. But I'm wondering about the integration of it with iOS devices, etc. If I move everything to Aperture, will I still be able to use photos in my mac's screensaver, or on my Apple TV, or sync to my iPhone....all of these seem to tie to iPhoto, but if you install Aperture, do they then work with it?
