View 1 Repliesi'm about to buy my first mac but unfortunately i need to use windows from time to time. So I am currently trying to figure out whether to go with virtulization or bootcamp.
So here is my question: Can OS X see the windows partition and if so can you move files without any problems?
I have set up a Windows XP virtual machine on my MacPro but I want to also get it into Bootcamp so i can try playing some of my PC Games. Is there anyway I can keep the files/settings I have with my Virtual Machine, or do I basically have to start from scratch? and then, if i can do something here, how?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI guess I just want to know if it is possible. I have a bootcamp partition of xp on my mbp and I recently got a desktop PC just to have. I wanted to copy the bootcamp partition onto my pc and was wondering if this is possible. I have Winclone and use that regularly to backup my windows xp partition on my MBP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'll be moving my OS and Apps on my MacPro to an Intel 160GB SSD, while keeping the home directory (except for the home library) on an HD using Carbon Copy Cloner.
At least that was the plan until I thought about my bootcamp partition with Win7. Whats the best solution for moving the Win7 partition or will I need to rerun boot camp and reinstall Win 7?
I recently swapped the 500Gb WD drive out of my Macbook Pro for a 500Gb Seagate Momentus XT drive. OSX transferred across without any trouble, but despite using WinClone to backup the Bootcamp partition (running Windows 7 64-bit) I haven't been able to restore it successfully. What happens is that it appears to restore, and I get the dual boot screen when I hold down the Alt key, but on selecting Windows I end up getting a screen saying that some component or other is missing. I might choose simply to use Windows 7 under Parallels on this machine if I am faced with a full restore, since that way I can more easily backup the Windows side, and since it's running (MUCH) better since swapping drives. However, IDEALLY I'd prefer to restore my existing partition...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI made an attempt to use Winclone to move Win7 (NTFS, 64-bit) to a new hard drive. After the image was deployed I rebooted. On the new drive,Win7 BSODs - I can't even boot into command line mode as it summarily reboots. The original bootcamp partition boots perfectly, however. I know Winclone was discontinued - assuming other people have used it with Win7 and have not had problems, without having to use Win7's DVD to do a repair install or to - for the moment - delete the original bootcamp partition that I know works, are there any means to fix the boot sector or alleviate this problem? (I think the BCD wants to point to the wrong partition, despite it starting to boot on its own...)
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirstly, I'm a hardcore Mac fan and think that Time Machine was great idea. I know it does complete backup, including software and applications. My question is what is preventing the user from installing a time machine restore of another mac on a new one thus giving the new mac the same expensive software for free?
Example: I got a refurbished 2009 i7 iMac and would like to have Photoshop on my iMac too, it currently resides on my MBP. Could I simply do a time machine back up from my MBP to my iMac and get the application pro bono? Just used Migration Assistant and it worked flawlessly! Much better than using time machine.
Recently bought the 27" i5 and am in the process of moving all my stuff over. I currently have about 5500 songs in iTunes. Of that, about 3800 songs are in my iTunes folder and the rest are in a folder called MP3. The problem is my MP3 folder has a total of 4300 songs - the ones that are in iTunes as well as a bunch more. I don't have all the MP3 songs in iTunes as I don't listen to them often so I didn't want to bog down iTunes with extra music that I don't always listen to. The more music I added to iTunes on my PC the slower it ran.
Having said all this, everything I read about moving the library says to consolidate it before you move it. If I do that then I'm going to have about 1700 duplicate songs on my Mac. Is there a way to move the files as is and change a global path setting from /My documents/My Music/MP3/... to mac/music/mp3 so that all my music that was in the MP3 folder will point to the new location on the Mac? Or does anyone have any other ideas?
How do I go about moving my iTunes Library from my PC to my new MacBook Pro?

I'm going to give my dad my current computer and get a new iMac, but I want to save as much time reorganizing my setup, so I'll be transferring via Firewire cable. I know how that works, but what I'm really curious about is whether or not I have to re-download all my applications.
Is is possible to just replace the application folder on the new computer with that of my current one (soon to be my father's)? I know that applications on a Mac are kind of like little bundles of information- the icons contain all the necessary code and whatnot (is it obvious I really don't know much about programming yet?), so can I just move the applications directly over, or do I have to re-download them all?
It's not a problem if I do have to re-download them, but to quote a literary character of old, "I would prefer not to." (10 awesome points for the first to tell me who said that)
Firstly im well aware of the other threads roaming around the forum, but im having troubles with all of the options do this i find. I'm also aware that people might find it hard to believe that someone who has shelled out for a couple of SSD's might be having problems doing this, please, just need the help, no flaming.
Basically, just acquired 2x new SSD's and im wishing to transfer my OS and Applications over to them, so i can boot from them.
I can't find a thread that addresses my particular problem, so I'm hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. I have a 100gb iTunes folder on my MacBook which I wish to transfer to my new iMac. Rather than simply copy it across to the iMac's HD, I would rather copy it to an external HD and then run iTunes from the external HD connected to my iMac. So my question is simply what is the best way to do this.
Also, can anyone recommend a great external HD which won't expire after 6 months?
I have purchased an external Hard drive to move my grandfather's iPhoto library from his iMac's internal to it (so that it can be accessed by both of my grandparent's accounts instead of just one since they share the same camera), and was wondering if moving it to the external would be enough of a back up or if it should be backed up again? The drive will be partitioned so that there is 400gb available for time machine and 100gb available for "everything else", like the iPhoto library for example. I partitioned it so that time machine backups don't squeeze the iPhoto library space down to 0. Is it nonsensical to have the library back up to the other partition as well since it is on the same drive, or would that in fact be a good idea?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWith all the excitement around the $79 price of Aperture on the new mac app store, I'm thinking about getting it, but wondering if I can then ditch iPhoto? I looked at Apple's website about Aperture and see that it seems to be iPhoto+ with all the features of iPhoto plus more. But I'm wondering about the integration of it with iOS devices, etc. If I move everything to Aperture, will I still be able to use photos in my mac's screensaver, or on my Apple TV, or sync to my iPhone....all of these seem to tie to iPhoto, but if you install Aperture, do they then work with it?

She's a heavy iTunes user who has downloaded 100+ songs from iTunes and wants to make sure she doesn't lose the songs. I thought i would move my whole itunes library to an external and just have it plugged into my macbook pro when i want to listen to something..

some people said its not a good idea but is it a good idea?
I have a 60GB iPhoto 08 library that I want to move from my internal iMac drive to my iomega 1TB NAS drive. Both the NAS and the iMac are connected via Gigabit ethernet. I have dragged a ton of files, namely my Itunes database, and it flew threw very quickly. But copying my iPhoto database, and pasting it to the NAS drive, it is crazy slow. 60 minutes later and it just finished it's first Gig. It says I have about 61 hours remaining to copy the remaining 59GB.
iPhoto is closed, and there is not much else going on with the machine. Even while this is copying I can drag and drop lots of other files and they fly through the network. Is this what I should expect?
read this article here on moving the home folder and it does seem to have some advantages and was wondering if any1 has done this?I have 3 drives currently set up like thisDrive 1: Boot/Applications (and home folder)Drive 2: DataDrive 3: Time MachineI planned on moving the home folder to drive 2, would this be a good idea as far as performance goes? would i have to reinstall anything?

I have Itunes 9 on both systems.I have read the guide and threads and done some research but there seems to be different types of methods from just copying the folder to more complex. Alot of the instructions aren't for Itunes 9 specifically so I don't want to screw this up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have Steermouse installed but I only use it for this 'snap to' function - I only use the track pad. Are there any other apps (pref free) that provide this function? I am experiencing loss of cursor movement after hibernation and always have to restart the machine. I am going to un-install Steermouse pretty soon and then see if the problem still occurs. In the meantime if there are any alternatives it would be good to know. I am surprised its not a built in standard pref!

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy annual accounts are due and I'm scanning all of my receipts. I have obviously put in scanner so they tessellate and fit neatly; only I keep coming across some that are in-correct in their dates (I've arranged the folders by months). I scan the mentioned receipt/receipts then I want to move them so they fit into a page with space and tessellate with the others (wasteful and not an option to have pages with only one receipt). Already tried using the 'touch up object tool' to try to move it; which looks like will work but image is behind/ disappears. It has gotta be possible to move things onto a page, does not have capabilities/ made for purpose of photoshop but only want to move something onto a page-not unreasonable request .

I'm getting my new iMac today and i have an itunes library on my current macbook(2006, 10.4.11), and i was hoping to move it to the iMac. The files are stored on my external HDD. I can't use the migration assistant because i don't have any firewire cables either. I was also hoping to keep all the ratings and play information ect.
