i have to send my mac in service, but before i have to save my data. i will receive a external hdd and thought to use time machine with it and my mac. after that i will send my mac in service. if they dont fix it or dont return it and i will buy a new mac, also with 10.6, will time machine make the new mac the same as old one, with all my folders and files? or do i have not to use time machine and backup file by file?

Background:I used "RAR expander" for a long time until I came across a file it was not compatible with. I then downloaded and installed "The Unarchiver" and it worked on the file "RAR expander" would not open.
After that "The Unarchiver" became the default program for .rar files. The problem is that "The Unarchiver" does not work well with password protected files. So for months now I have just manually opened "RAR expander" whenever I try to open a password protected file.
I want to keep both programs so I will be able to open any file, but as I rarely use "The Unarchiver" I would like to have that be the one I have to dig through sub-folders to use. That is, unless there is some excellent program I have not tried.
I just got my first MacBook about a month ago. I love it... though I'm having some difficulty understanding and... accepting iPhoto. I like control of my photos to the file level and I don't like the libarary.Anyway... my old Windows Laptop I backed up to an external HD. Worked fine... I just copied and pasted my photo directories to the HD.I want to do the same with my MacBook... of course. I don't want to have to reformat the external HD to Mac because I have lots of photos and files on there that I want to leave on there and not remove with a format.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Zs7, & I am reading about it's video formats. It shoots AVCHD lite movies and motion jpg movies. I would like to be able to burn these raw movie files unedited to blank DVDs, so my family can view them right away, in the excitement of filming, they are eager to see the results. They do not like to wait for me to do the complex & tedious process of video editing with titles etc, to play. Being able to just burn the raw files for immediate viewing relives me of the burden of complex video editing, of which I do not enjoy very much, & makes family happy, to get the video out of the camera to the DVD player & TV. We have a Philips DVD player that says it can play Divx movies, & an analog tube TV.
So is there a quick painless way that I can get the raw files out of the camera and onto DVD for viewing on a TV. Or is the raw material only viewable on the camera & computer?If the only way to get this material to DVD is by complex video editing, I could be stuck editing literally hours of footage that my family likes to film, they have the film bug, & like to film everything.
how to make finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"? See the attach - I recently installed Civilization 5 from Steam and now I have a lot of unneeded files (*.log and *.ini) shown in All My Files colder in Finder.Â

ive been triying to store all my dvds into my external HD but im having trouble with file size... i have a 250GB External HD. it has bout 50 GB of music files, pages docs... just a backup of a few things... but all my dvds are using up more that 150GB. all the movies ive backed up using mactheripper. also ive used handbreak to move those movies onto iTunes > iPod. my question is if i can reduce file size without losing dvd extras, language menus, etc. handbreak doesn't do this so im looking to make the VIDEO_TS folder's files smaller.

However, when Handbrake has finished scanning the source DVD (commercial DVDs), it only shows 1 title in the drop down title box. I have tried restarting, taking the DVD out and popping it back in again, but with no luck. Has anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong? How do I get all titles to show in the drop down title selection box?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have created a simple Automator action which says 'when files are added to folder Dropbox>Camera Uploads, import them to iPhoto'.The problem is that as the files are added to Dropbox one at a time (by the Dropbox servers, after they are taken on my Android phone and the Dropbox app auto-uploads them), this means there is a gap of 30-60 secs between photos, and more for a video. The end result therefore is iPhoto has each photo imported as a separate 'Event', rather than all the photos imported as one event.Â
What I'd like to say is 'wait for 5 minutes after the most recent photo/video was added, before importing all the photos/videos just added in that batch'. That way instead of iPhoto receiving each file one at a time and importing them separately, Automater will wait until the folder falls silent, indicating the import from the phone has finished, and only then will it import all the photos taken as one event.Â

Sorry for the incredibly stupid question, but I just got the gfxCardStatus application for my i5, and was wondering whether turning on the NVIDIA video card will make applications like Mail, Firefox, etc. faster?
I read something about OpenCL, but am not really sure whether it works for all applications.
I find that turning on the NVIDIA card, instead of using the integrated Intel one, makes my laptop hotter.
