My Mac has my home folder on an internal HD (with the startup disk on internal SSD). How do I get the "locate" command to index (and hence be able to find) all files that are in my user folder (~/) and its subfolders? I want to be able to do this without changing permissions on my user files, of course.

Someone gave me a terminal command that allowed my OS X Admin user permission to make an application alias without having to enter my user password. I've since forgotten the command and wish to use it for a new admin user since my old admin has gremlins on a number of apps but new users are not troubled in same way. I can't beleive Apple would default to requiring a password to make/edit an alias but there you go the distrurbing trend towards their total control of my desktop advances… not to mention User SysPrefs leaking over from another user for keyboard shortcuts and sounds?

When I connect a USB drive, it shows up on my desktop, but Finder won't find anything on it because it doesn't get indexed. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) on an iMac G5 with a PowerPC G5 (3.0) processor. The drive in question is NTFS, but it also seems like the Mac doesn't index FAT-formatted USB drives if they were formatted on a PC. Is there any way that automatic indexing could have been turned off? I think the department that had this system before we got it would have turned that off if possible, and I'd like to find out how to turn it back on?

I tried to create a bootable recovery drive using my usb for OS Lion and was successful with it. Unfortunately the files which I had stored in the usb stick prior to this seem to have disappeared. I had a couple hundred albums loaded on my 1Tb external drive, but when I upgraded to Lion 10.7 it became possible to use the drive as a Time Machine drive, which wiped out all of my music.I've been slowly reloading the music -- it was all from CDs I own so I really didn't lose anything but a lot of time. However, iTunes index shows the old files still there, until you go to try to play the file, when it says "unable to locate file." Once I have an album reloaded, unfortunately both versions are show -- one phantom, and one playable. I haven't been able to figure out how to remove all of the dead pointers to files that no longer exist.It would be slick if there was a way to have iTunes requery my backup disc and only show what actually resides there. Anybody know of a utility to do that???

I just noticed that Spotlight does not seem to index the content of .txt files. It will pick up search strings in the names of text files, but not in the contents. Is there any way to get Spotlight to index the content of .txt files?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've stupidly moved (not deleted) a couple of shortcut links to items in the 'private' folder, from their correct place resulting in my Macbook Pro (10.5) refusing to boot.The files were resident in the top level of the Macintosh HD after enabling the viewing of hidden files using console. I created a new folder at the same level and moved the files into it.
Problem is I cant remember the specific file names that i moved - though it was only a couple )I have started up in single user mode and know the commands for moving files around, but need to be able to view the folder/file structure of the disk.Is there a command usable from Single User interface that would list the files/folder structure?
So I just inherited from my coworker's MacBook Pro. I then decided to transfer all of my files and realized that the root folder was still on his name. I changed the User's name in "System Preferences" but that did not change the root folder's name. I then went to Terminal and tried to change the folder's name using the "mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName"Â and the prompt said Permission denied. I then used "sudo mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName". After restarting my computer, all the files were gone and I landed on a "LION first time USE" type of Desktop. All my files are gone and terminal shows me two users' names under /Users/ => OldUser and NewUser.
What can I do to recover my old files? What can I do to repair my Mistake and only have one User?

I was having a lot of problems with my new (Christmas 11) MPB. It was very sluggish and occasionally would freeze. I took it to my Apple Store and the Genius said I was running all my apps in root and had too many files on the desktop.They should be under a user. Any files on the desktop are refreshed frequently, such as graphics (CAD, pictures, etc.) and that was what was killing performance. She then proceded to move my files/apps to my user profile.
Since I am the only user, I never paid any attention to where the files were.I would like to verify the information above and do the same process on two other computers, but I didn't catch enough of what she did to do it solo.

I have backed up my image files to an external drive. I use Bridge to view and sort images that came with Photoshop CS5.0 i have built some collections and would like these to move with the images on to to my back up drive so i can acess them from both my MacBook and my iMac, both are 10.7.3 mid 2007 machines. the images appear along with and labels (colours and stars) but collections do not!

I've been trying to install some software, however, every time I try to do the "make" command on a Makefile, I get the following error: -bash: make: command not found. The manual page does not exists either. I have no idea why the "make" command doesn't exists. I might have added a missing command in the past, but I don't remember. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.7. Upgraded to 10.7.3 and mail says that 'Mail index has been damaged?' It goes through the importing of new mailboxes and then says import failed. I've fiddled, deleting the envelope files and soome other bits and now it's not working at all. Â

I was trying to discover what was eating up all my disc space on my 11 inch MBA. After doing some research I discovered over 30GB was being eaten up by a particular type of file in "/users/username/library/mail/V2/mailboxes/recovered messages/89AF938B-6B1D-44AC-9E37-158CF278B361/DATA/3/messages". I found 288 ".emlx" files, all duplicates of one another, each is 112MB big. And they continually copy themselves.
Looking at the dates, the first file in the folder was created 12/02/2012 and the most recent file in the folder was created roughly 15 minutes ago on todays date of 23/02/2012. In fact while inspecting the folder, I saw before my eyes them being duplicated. Because I had one of the files highlighted, then began to use safari for a few minutes, and when I came back, there were more of the things underneath the one which I had highlighted!
The files are email files, and they are all copies of a particular email I sent using iPhoto. I sent an album of about 25 or so photos through the iPhoto sharing feature. So is iPhoto or Mail backing up this email over and over again for some reason? They seem to copy themselves only when both iPhoto and Mail applications are open at the same time. I know this because I have experimented with it and can see more and more being created.

so first off, sorry for the potential repost. I couldn't find the answer on the forum so I am starting a new thread.
Let's say I have a 50gb music library. I want to put all 50gb on the external, and keep about 30gb on my iBook.
That part was easy enough, however I am running into problems keeping everything in my library located.
Everytime I disconnect and then reconnect the external, anything that's not on my iBook can't be located.
I want to make it so that when the external is not connected, my entire library (EXT and INT) is shown[obviously, I won't be able to play anything that resides on the EXT], and when I connect the EXT, I want it to locate the files that are external only.
I also want iTunes to keep my folders organized, there, that's the kicker.
On linux I use "locate" to find anything via command line. I see that locate is installed on my Mac but invoking it does not always find what I am looking for I thought that maybe I need to update the database but $ sudo slocate -u gives me a command not found error. Is there a cool apple trick to finding files that I know are right in front of my face?
