Background:I used "RAR expander" for a long time until I came across a file it was not compatible with. I then downloaded and installed "The Unarchiver" and it worked on the file "RAR expander" would not open.
After that "The Unarchiver" became the default program for .rar files. The problem is that "The Unarchiver" does not work well with password protected files. So for months now I have just manually opened "RAR expander" whenever I try to open a password protected file.
I want to keep both programs so I will be able to open any file, but as I rarely use "The Unarchiver" I would like to have that be the one I have to dig through sub-folders to use. That is, unless there is some excellent program I have not tried.

Oct 16, 2009I just got my first MacBook about a month ago. I love it... though I'm having some difficulty understanding and... accepting iPhoto. I like control of my photos to the file level and I don't like the libarary.Anyway... my old Windows Laptop I backed up to an external HD. Worked fine... I just copied and pasted my photo directories to the HD.I want to do the same with my MacBook... of course. I don't want to have to reformat the external HD to Mac because I have lots of photos and files on there that I want to leave on there and not remove with a format.

Jan 7, 2009I have a program that can find duplicate files. What my questions is if I get an email from someone and then I forward it to someone now I have a duplicate one in my inbox and another in my sent. If I delete the one in my sent then when I open it the attachment will not show. Is there a way for it to just store the file once and then create an alias pointing to the main file.
Another example: If I attach a photo from iPhoto to an email there again is another duplicate. I would much rather Mail send the photo and create an alias to the original photo in iPhoto thus creating no duplicates.
I hope that was not confusing.
I want a program that will find duplicates and then keep 1 and create alias's for the one's deleted.
I know this is not all cases of duplicate files but mainly my Mail has way to many duplicates.
Applications :: Won't Find Program To Organize All Files
Mar 18, 2009I have a bunch of music on my computer that isn't properly named, like for instance:
Flo Rida - Right Round is named: right round flo rida.
This is cause I didn't care before and now I do. I also have a lot of videos on my computer, mostly personal, that I'd like to rename. I tried doing it one by one (hitting enter/return key, then changing the name) but it's taking to long.
Is there a program that I can do it? Sorry if this was discussed already, not quite sure what to search.

Feb 12, 2010In iTunes I manage my music manually. Sometimes I need to change a song's file name because something was spelled incorrectly. To change a song's file name I rename it in Finder. iTunes is running the background. Now here's the catch: After renaming a file I check whether iTunes detected its new location (CMD+I for "Get Info"). Mostly iTunes DOES recognize the new file path, but sometimes it doesn't. What helps iTunes detecting the new location? I really can't see a pattern in iTunes' behavior.

Jul 24, 2010I recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Zs7, & I am reading about it's video formats. It shoots AVCHD lite movies and motion jpg movies. I would like to be able to burn these raw movie files unedited to blank DVDs, so my family can view them right away, in the excitement of filming, they are eager to see the results. They do not like to wait for me to do the complex & tedious process of video editing with titles etc, to play. Being able to just burn the raw files for immediate viewing relives me of the burden of complex video editing, of which I do not enjoy very much, & makes family happy, to get the video out of the camera to the DVD player & TV. We have a Philips DVD player that says it can play Divx movies, & an analog tube TV.
So is there a quick painless way that I can get the raw files out of the camera and onto DVD for viewing on a TV. Or is the raw material only viewable on the camera & computer?If the only way to get this material to DVD is by complex video editing, I could be stuck editing literally hours of footage that my family likes to film, they have the film bug, & like to film everything.

Apr 27, 2009I am moving over to OSX on my iMac to manage my audio and image files. Right now I have them spread over several external hard drives on my PC. I have found a good program that does a very good job of identifying duplicates in both categories. They are called Audio Comparer and Video Comparer. Right now they only have windows versions. I am also looking at DupGuru Picture and Music editions which just happen to have a version for each platform. There is also Deep which I will try.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for Mac software that can perform these functions on several external hard drives? I do not plan to use iPhoto (Photoshop, Lightroom, and Lightzone) and obviously will be using iTunes but I desperately need to find and delete all the duplicate files before bringing into iTunes. I know iTunes can locate duplicate file, but names of them may be different since they have been in several Windows programs and formats (MP3, Flac, Apple Lossless....)
I could do this on the PC, but if I can avoid purchasing software that I will not use again (PC) versus doing it on the Mac and having the software for later use is my goal.

Software :: Transferring Files From Lacie To Pc / Itunes Unable To Find Music Files?
Aug 15, 2009I have a Lacie external hard disk that was originally formatted for PCs. I have some files there, but more importantly, my iTunes library is saved directly on the Lacie (I have everything on apple lossless, so they are some big files). I will keep using this PC while connected to the Lacie hard disk to syncro my iPod.
The problem is that I bought a mac now and I wanted the Lacie hard disk to be able to transfer files from mac to pc and vice versa. I have already read that I would have to copy the files that are on the Lacie, reformat the Lacie and then paste the files back. My only doubt is that if I do this reformatting, will I have any problems using the iTunes library while connected to my pc and iPod?
I just ask that because every time I changed any iTunes library folder on the computer, the iTunes would say that the music file couldn�t be found and ask me if I wanted to look for the file. I didn�t want to reformat the Lacie to later find out that I would have to �look for� every single music file, because that would be nearly impossible. I don�t know if I was able to make my question really clear�

Jul 22, 2010I've been drawn to the 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out, but have such a tough time justifying the spend of $899 on a screen. Surely the manufacturing cost of a 24" LED backlit display has come down in the past year and a half so I think Apple could sell so many more units if they just offered some sort of bundle package deal. For example, why not offer a $200 rebate on the purchase of an Apple display with a new Mac, similar to the iPod Touch promotion? Even at $699, it would still be tough to swallow, but some may just bite the bullet to take advantage of the offer.
I hope they do something like this when/if they release the rumored 27" Cinema Display, but I know it's unlikely. So what do you think --- would I just be better off buying a 27" iMac down the line than get nailed for one of these displays? (Note: I have the 15" MacBook Pro and it rarely leaves my house).
Applications :: ITunes Cannot Find Music Anymore (Mass Find Option)
Jan 30, 2009Yesterday, I had to re-format my external hard drive so that it could be "recordable" within Pro Tools, which wasn't a major issue, I just had to move everything from my Lacie drive to another drive, do the format, and then throw it all back on. It took a little while but this also included moving my nearly 60gb itunes library. Now that it is on the newly formatted hard drive, itunes doesn't seem to be able to find the majority of the songs any more. I've tried changing the music folder and a few other things, and there is no way I'm going through and doing the "cant find music - click here to find it" palava. Is anyone aware of a way that you can "mass find" all of the music in any way other than starting the library again and adding all the music (I don't really want to lose all of my play counts and ratings if possible!)

May 10, 2009I've read tutorials on it, Ive downloaded it, played with it, uninstalled it. I have to be missing something here. To me it looks just like a more complicated way to get to programs and things you want. What am I missing? What does it really do? I don't get why everyone is so in love with this program. Everything online I find about it gushes about how great it is but always ends up boiling down to "it helps you open applications faster".
