Somehow I managed to do a "stroke" on the trackpad that made the icons on my desktop very large. I can't figure out what I did or find a setting to change them back to small size.
Anyone know the stroke or where to find the setting?

ive been triying to store all my dvds into my external HD but im having trouble with file size... i have a 250GB External HD. it has bout 50 GB of music files, pages docs... just a backup of a few things... but all my dvds are using up more that 150GB. all the movies ive backed up using mactheripper. also ive used handbreak to move those movies onto iTunes > iPod. my question is if i can reduce file size without losing dvd extras, language menus, etc. handbreak doesn't do this so im looking to make the VIDEO_TS folder's files smaller.

How can i compress one large file into segments of many smaller files that can be later uncompressed in windows, with the help of winrar? Example, i have a 4GB file and i want to make 4 segments of 1gb, is there such an app that can do this and then expand those files with the use of winrar?

I recently sold my MacBook Pro, but before doing so I made a compressed image of the hard drive via Disk Utility so I would have access to the files once the laptop was gone. The file was roughly 460GB compressed. The file has been stored on my Drobo. Now I'm trying to mount the image so I can move things over to my new computer but I'm having trouble getting the image to mount, convert or anything. Typically I get a message to the effect of "no mountable filesystem found".

I can't move any files on the desktop or put them in the trash. When I try to move the file it shows the circle with the loine through it. When I try to trash them it asks for a password, after I type it in it makes the typical trashing sound but it doesn't go into the trash. I am using lion.

Every time I try to move a file from my application folder and move it somewhere (e.g. desktop) it makes an alias of the file(or folder) rather than letting me move the file. I rebuilt permissions and all the other Voodoo.

I bought an external hard drive and formatted it to ntfs. Whenever I copy files from the Mac to the external ntfs drive it automatically converts it to a compressed ntfs file. This is very frustrating because my media player only plays uncompressed files, so I can't play my files on it. Is there anyway to *prevent* my mac from automatically compressing the files when they are copied to a ntfs drive?

If you open the preferences for the archive utility, it offers 3 archive formats to use when compressing files:
(1) Compressed archive
(2) Regular archive
(3) Zip archive
I've googled, but can't find out what the difference is between (1) and (3).

My parents just got a new Gateway desktop PC, and they want some music/movies. I have a ton on my MBP hard drive, so I just figured I could move the files over thru some way like firewire or something (both computers have firewire ports).
what would be the easiest? And would the fact that the harddrives are configured differently effect this? HFS to NTFS?

Most of the photos I receive are huge, about 1MB or more. In order to put them on my rescue group's website, they must be much smaller, preferably 100-200KB. Where in the world can I do this on iPhoto?
The only way I've found is to email the picture to myself. There absolutely has to be a better/faster way.

I'm trying to move my Time Machine backup from my Drobo to another disk, so I can reformat my Drobo, then copy back the TM back. The problem is that I don't have a disk that's bigger then the Drobo, so I need to copy it onto a smaller disk before copying it back to the Drobo.I've tried to do this the way that's described all over the web (using Disk Utility), but this always results in the error: Restore Failure, Not enough space on /dev/disk1s2 to restore. I believe this is because everyone is going to a *bigger* disk and I'm trying to go the other way.

I have snow leopard. I have a 1TB time machine set up. After all I just realize that it is too big for what I actually need. I think half of that would be more than enough. I have another 500GB hard drive. I was wondering how can I move my time machine files from a Bigger hard drive to a smaller hard drive.
All discussions, post and forums explain how to do it from smaller to a bigger hard drive using Disk utility. But that did not work for me, there is a error saying that the source is bigger than the destination. Does anybody know how can do this? basically using the apple computer and trying to avoid 3rd party software.PS, The back-up file inside the 1 TB hard drive is much less than 500 GB.

having my eyes get used to the 1900x1200 resolution in my 17" unibody macbook pro's screen is probably not good with the macbook air's 1280x800 resolution i use at home, so i need to press "cmd -" every time i browse some pages.
is there any way to make safari load pages with smaller text size? 1 press of "cmd -" is probably good enough.

I have two accounts a standard user account that I use all of the time and a separate admin account to use when I need to. Okay, so I just started my mac up and was creating some new folders and moving files from my user folder to my desktop (on my standard account). OS 10.5 comes up with a box asking for an admin password to make changes. It also does this when I try to move files to the trash. How do I fix this permissions error? (I've already tried repairing permissions and that didn't work)

I've just tried to mess around with some stuff in iTunes so i can sync my iPhone on both of my Macs. I did it all as instructed but when I opened the window was huge, and I can't make it any smaller. It's like a copy of my iTunes on my 24" iMac.
I tried deleting everything iTunes related and reinstalling but still the same.
Anyone got any solutions as to how to have a COMPLETELY clean version of itunes, or how to make the window smaller?

When my girlfriend and I are in different time zones, which is unfortunately quite often, we communicate in part by sending small "movie postcards" to each other. We've been doing this with iMovie and the built-in iSight cameras in our macbooks, up- and downloading the .mov files using Dropbox.
This has worked OK, but the files are quite big, about 100 MB per minute. With slow bandwidths this can be a pain, and the image quality isn't that great, so I'm thinking there must be a better way to do this. Can't the video files be made smaller?

I'm kind of new to Automator and I'm trying to come up with a sequence that will severely save me a few hours a day moving files from two larger folders into smaller folders. Basically the setup is that I have two folders, one constantly being populated with images and the other with video files. They each have file names starting with a two digit number (i.e. 12, 11, 10...) or "BG" and then a two digit number (i.e. BG12, BG11, BG10...) with the digits corresponding to a year. Essentially, I'd need to move the files into folders corresponding to the year (i.e. files starting with BG12 and 12 would be moved to 2012, files starting with BG11 and 11 would be moved to 2011, etc). As it stands now, I've only been able to get the 2012 folder populated.
