Applications :: Kernel Panic Message - Restart Computer
Jul 26, 2010
My imac has started to have a kernel panic all the time lately. It is where the whole screen will go darker and then a box in all different languages comes up saying I need to restart the computer. I have a couple of questions in relation to this, first if I reinstall and then back up from timemachine will I have the same issue again? If I do a fresh install and reimport all my music and vids manually will that be a better way to do things?

I turned up one day to teach using the Mac Pro and the message on the screen said I had to restart my computer. After many times I gave up. I wrongly thought the hard disk failed as one of the pupils saw some water underneath the Mac from the leaking roof. I checked and formatted the hard drive inside a pc and put Windows on it. After inserting the hard drive and the OSX into the dvd drive proceeded to re-install the software, only to find exactly the same problem as before. What to check next before trying to find someone to fix it.

Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). For single user mode, it first worked and I was able to remove login items, but it froze again and now generates the following panic log. All the hardware have been the same and I have installed vpn a few months ago and dropbox last week.
Jettinsoning kernel linker.
Resetting IOCatalogue.

I think it's UNIX. Not too familiar with it. I have G4 powerbook. 4 years old. Tiger. I was surfing safari, when I got the wheel. Couldn't even click the desktop to activate the finder. Did a hard reboot. Now, the mac Icon comes up, then goes to a black screen, then to the MAC OSX start up window (bar doesn't move). Then a black screen with Darwin/BSD (new-host.home) (console) login: It just comes up with a line that ends with my user name and restarted then same thing happens.

I just got a refurbished iMac G5 from the university. When I got home I installed all of my applications. I then update them. Like usual, I have to restart the computer when they are done installing to complete the process, so I do. However, when I boot up the computer again I get a Kernal Panic. ("You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.")

I have a MBP, it had a flickering screen (graphics card), so I got it fixed under warranty, then about a month after the fix, the MBP refused to wake - I took it back again and it was fixed.
Now the MBP is experiencing repeated kernel panics - especially after the any system update - there were a few recently.
The only solution seems to be switching the machine off and letting it cool.

I was trying to help my husband with his phone. I followed the phone's manufacturer's suggestions and it told me load software for managing it. When I went to install it the computer told me it had 59 things to install. It was late, I was tired and shouldn't have been doing this at this time. I did, when it was done installing we had a kernel panic. I am in a different country, in a village. No MacStore! I am frightened and worried. I am computer literate for a person my age, but still. If it is to be resolved I will have to do it and I wish the kids were here with their friends. I am hoping someone will be able to talk me out of this predicament.
I have tried to press the shift key for safe mode. No result. I have tried another one that has me pressing some buttons while loading and text comes up and I am supposed to type in FSCK -fy However this could not be done as the cursor was there, but no text was appearing. I think that is all I have tried. I do have my MacBook here and it is slightly older than his. I may have a firewire that may work to run his off of mine. I don't know. Can't you come in like Verizon did years ago and fix it right in front of me over the internet?

Mac G5 ppc OSX10.4.11
Starting up from any boot disk will give me a kernel panic forcing me to hard restart.
Background:
After many freezes I ran disk utility and I get:
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
So I use my wife's Imac startup disk to boot it in order to repair but I get the dreadfull death screen (I know how to press the C) I'm thinking maybe it's because her disk if for her Intel proc so I go and buy a copy of disk warrior 4, and same problem.

I got a message to update some software, so I pushed the right keys to download. A few minutes later I got an error key and the screen went gray. I shut it down. Then I got a message that says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." I've done this countless times. The message in the left corner says panic, which I am doing.
It says, "Unable to find driver for this platform: /"ACPI/" Slashes go the other way,but can't find any on this laptop.

I am trying to create a partition with Boot Camp and install Windows XP SP2. Whenever i try to create a partition, the kernel crashes and i need to restart my whole computer, boot up from the OSX CD and then "Repair Disk" to get the lost hard drive space back. I had partitioned my HD last week, but then removed it, but now when i try it, it always freezes the computer. is there any way to solve this problem without my data being lost?

I have a 2008 MacPro Octo 2.8GHz. Whilst I was in Vista64 (a separate drive, not visualization) I was playing a halflife game called day of defeat. The game froze twice, requiring a crtl-alt-del to release it and stop the application that was not working. When I then rebooted into OSX, the "You need to restart your computer" screen appeared in 4 languages, which I believe is the Kernel panic screen. I've done the hardware test that reports no problems (D key). I've tried re-installing the operating system, (C key), no go just panics. I've tried a safe boot (shift) lots of disk activity followed by a panic. I've even reset the PRAM, no effect.
The queer thing is it will boot into Vista64, but there is some screen corruption whilsts its booting, but once in, it works OK with the exception of playing any 3D games, they will not launch (re-installed drivers). Vista reports that there is no 3D hardware acceleration. Does OSX require 3D just to get past the login screen? I've removed some ram and removed all the other hard drives. I'm beginning to think the 8800GT is playing up, otherwise why would vista still work?, but not 3D games? Is there any software I can use in Vista to check the 8800GT? I also noticed that it seemed to be taking longer and longer to shut down.

During the process of uploading attachments to emails or posts or uploading anything to putfile, the screen dims from the top and I get a multilingual message telling me to hold down the power button for several seconds. This first occured while uploading a .zip file.

So I did read though the previous forum relating to this problem. None of the posters were having the exact issue I am, and I could not find a solution within.
my hardware: powerbook G4. 1.33GHz Power PC. (upgraded to) 2GB DDR SDRAM. (just upgraded to) 320GB WD HDD
my OS: Just installed 10.4.11
Here's the scenario (I hope someone can help):
Several months ago my poor baby took a dive off a counter onto the tile floor, while running. Never before this did I see the "Kernal Panic" restart screen.
Immediately following the fall, I get the error if the computer is bumped, moved or if I put weight on the keyboard (palms).
I feared it was a HDD issue so I hastily replaced the toshiba 60GB HD with a WD320 HD. And at the same time I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11.
The computer seemed fine for a couple weeks, now I am getting the error again with increasing frequency. Mostly when I put pressure on the keyboard (palms).
What I tried: new HD, new OS, checked the RAM to see if it had come loose in the fall.
Could it be my video card? Is it more likely hardware or software?

My girlfriend's Macbook gave her the restart computer, kernal panic message earlier today when she tried to open a .tiff file in Photoshop CS3. She did as she was told, however now the computer won't get past the apple logo when we hit the power button. Every time the message comes up. I have had a look around the net and tried the advice I could find, but haven't had any luck.
I have tried resetting pram and the other one. I have also taken out each memory one at a time to see if this makes a difference, but each time the message still appears. She has a 2007 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, which we upgraded around a month ago from Tiger. It's got 2gb of ram and I think 2.2Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor.
