I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook with 1GB of SDRAM. I have OS X Tiger v. 10.4.6, and I just recieved Leopard v. 10.5.4, and I am attempting to install it. If it makes any difference, I have my harddrive partitioned - 40GB for OS X, and 30GB for Ubuntu Linux (8.10 Intrepid Ibex), and rEFIt to switch between the two. I booted into Tiger and popped in the Leopard installation DVD. A window popped open with an icon to install Leopard. I double clicked on this, and it told me to restart. So, I pressed the restart button in the window, and the computer restarted, automatically booting into the OSX DVD.
The Apple logo popped up, with the little spinning wheel. It churned for a few minutes, then it had a kernel panic: So, I did as the notification told me, and restarted. It automatically booted into the DVD again, and the same thing happened. Next time, as a booted up, I held the eject key down, and I was able to get the DVD out. So, I'm back to where I started, but I don't have Leopard installed. There are several minor scratches on the DVD, but nothing I would expect to mess with the DVD. Another thing: I popped in the Leopard DVD, and opened the Disk Utility after this fiasco, and verified the DVD. I got this error output:
Code:
Verifying volume "disk1s3"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Invalid node structure
The volume Mac OS X Install DVD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
However, the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out. I don't want to go through the Apple Support Hotline.

I just got a refurbished iMac G5 from the university. When I got home I installed all of my applications. I then update them. Like usual, I have to restart the computer when they are done installing to complete the process, so I do. However, when I boot up the computer again I get a Kernal Panic. ("You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.")

After installing 4GB of RAM on my unibody macbook pro, I get a kernel panic error. Am I right that the problem is about CPU? Is that mean that it is dying or broken?

I'm in possession of a mac pro 2x 2.8ghz intel quad core running leopard. I have a main hardrive and a secondary harddrive. I was attempting to reformat the first hd and reinstall leopard. I pop in the cd as I have with many other systems, click the install startup and reboot, after about 4 minutes of waiting I see the black screen drop and it asks me to restart my comp, presumably a kernel panic error. I've done this with two different hd's to rule out it being an hd problem. I've also procured a friend's copy of leopard and the same problem occurs. The system was acquired from a local business that closed recently and sold off it's stuff which is how I came into possession of the system. It has no 3d party hardware that I can see. I find myself wondering if it is a problem with the motherboard and since the system used to be for business purposes perhaps there is some sort of block or lockout on the mobo that's preventing an installation.

I was following the directions from the iphone dev team's blog on how to fix the DFU mode in 10.5.6 by dl'ing from Apple and installing the "IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg" for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33. After I installed it and restarted as the directions stated, the machine started to reboot and then had kernel panic on start up. Now I can't get back the start up screen. I've tried disk utility and repairing permissions but it hasn't helped. What I can do other than archiving and installing?

a bit complicated. I have a 3 year old iMac, Snow Leopard 10.5.2 on the dics, but I updated it so..a pretty receent version of Snow Leopard. I had had kernel panics before- it turned out to be a bad RAM chip, replaced it and it fixed the problem.
This time, I was hoping it was the same. I got a new RAM chip, swapped them out and ID'ed the bad one. Reseated the RAM. Probelm is, when I was trying to fix the problem, I had booted in Safe Mode. Now the iMac starts up normally- the chime, the Apple- AND the Safe Mode bar.
Which progresses for about 5 seconds before another Kernel panic descends. This happens whether the keyboard is connected or not. At this point the Safe Mode at startup bugs me more than the kernel panics! Sigh.
I wonder if there's any key combo on startup I could try to at least get out of Safe Mode before Kernel panic sets in. When my laptop has a kernel panic i can usually repair with Disk repair on CD. I realize this sounds hopeless! And i need it repaired, but money is an issue.

my name is SPC Sanders. I am a forward observer currently deployed to Afghanistan. I've owned a Macbook Pro for a couple of years.
About three weeks ago, I made the stupid mistake of attempting to run iOSX so I could dual boot with Windows 7 (all stuff I acquired while I was home on midtour leave.) The install seemed to be ok, however, I noticed immediately I could not make any changes to settings as my administrator password was no longer working. (Administrator is my only account on this laptop.)
At fear of losing my operability, I simply did not power down for that whole time. However, I recently moved bases, and alas, the time came to power down.
Upon bootup, I get a constant spinning wheel. I left this on for a couple of hours just to be sure, then realized it was a lost cause. I tried booting in safe mode, and I got some kernel panic. It says a bunch of stuff about debugger calling the panic, bla bla bla, but the thing that caught my eze was Mac OS version not set yet.
After booting in safe mode, getting that error, and powering off, my laptop will boot into a grezish blueish lightblueish (alternating) type of screen, which sometimes has the spinning wheel, sometimes not. Again, nothing.
I understand I will probably need my OS disc to fix this, but I didn't bring it with me. Am I SOL?

My imac has started to have a kernel panic all the time lately. It is where the whole screen will go darker and then a box in all different languages comes up saying I need to restart the computer. I have a couple of questions in relation to this, first if I reinstall and then back up from timemachine will I have the same issue again? If I do a fresh install and reimport all my music and vids manually will that be a better way to do things?

It's a 2.16 intel Core 2 duo with the ATI Radeon X1600 128MB video and I'm running OSX 10.7.3. It started happening on Snow leopard so I thought maybe upgrading to Lion would fix it but it has continued exactly the same. I've had an issue for a while now where the computer would just freeze all of a sudden. It happened after a few days at times while sometimes it happen right after a reboot.
Here are the things I've tried.
1. I upgraded to lion
2. I replaced the ram
3. Look at the crash log but found nothing
4. Ram mem check utility but it found nothing
I can boot the computer in safe mode by holding the shift key and it works perfect with no freezing but I loose audio support becuase I think it's not loading the audio drivers. Question is: Can I select what drivers I want on boot when starting in regular mode not safe mode in order to try to disable drivers until I find the issue? Is there anyplace else that I can find which driver caused the computer to freeze after a freeze/crash? If I can ID the driver is there a way to update/replace the driver if it doesn't come up in "software update"? I'm thinking it's the video driver becuase I would occationally get some weird things happening on the screen that I attributed to an older display.

I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.
i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.
my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?

My computer went down, when I brought it back up Final Cut Pro took 5-10 minutes just to simply open. I wasn't even attempting to open a certain project. I'm getting a kernel panic at start up and the optical drive wont read the start up DVD. I can boot up windows via bootcamp and the machine runs fine. I'm not getting any red LED's on my risers, so i'm assuming its not a RAM issue. I have a Mac Pro 8-core (2008) stock, just added 10 gigs of RAM.

I recently got a Dell 2209WA with built in USB hub. and great i thought, i can manage the USB ports on my macbook a bit more effectively. But it seems when i pull the USB cable when i want to go portable, it gets a KP, at the moment i suspect it has something to do with the logitech wireless adaptor i have plugged into the monitor. it exhibits these issues when the monitor is turned off as well.
I have another USB hub, but i pretty much use it exclusively for my external hard drives (i don't really like to keep it plugged in all the time, if powered up for some reason the drives spin up in the middle of the night even when the macbook is sleeping) and it does nothing like this when the adaptor is plugged into that.

I've had two of these in less than 24 hours on this new machine. I was able to work in Photoshop and Aperture fine, but the minute I started watching Hulu videos I started getting these. Oddly enough. I zapped PRAM and repaired permissions, and haven't had another one yet... but should I just take it back now while I'm still in my 14 days?

Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). For single user mode, it first worked and I was able to remove login items, but it froze again and now generates the following panic log. All the hardware have been the same and I have installed vpn a few months ago and dropbox last week.

I'm trying to get OSX installed onto my new intel x25-m SSD, but it just won't happen. Trying to boot from my install DVD that came with my new Mac Pro throws up a kernel panic after about a minute or two of loading.
Trying to boot from my store-bought Leopard DVD does nothing. After restarting it just sits there and the DVD stops spinning after a couple minutes. Is there another way I can turn my new SSD into the boot drive? This is driving me nuts.

I'm new to mac so everything you say try to be as specific as possible.
i bought a used ibook g4 on ebay. i am pretty sure it is running OS X 10.1 if that matters but i'm not sure on that.
After messing around for a while i turn it off and back on a while later and when it was turning on it came to the gray screen and had a folder with a question mark then the little dude with the nice smilie face but an error comes up.

My wife was attempting to load the most recent updates onto her MB, the update failed (not sure exactly which one) and now OSX won't load. She gets a "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM" panic and it won't go any farther - neither in safe mode nor single user mode. I booted off of my computer's recovery disc (I haven't found hers yet - we recently moved) and used Disk Utility to repair the disk and the disk permissions, but it still won't load.

I did a quick search through the forum and didn't see anything specific about this problem. It just started to occur yesterday and nothing has changed on the computer. (Nothing new installed and no external hardware plugged in.)
Basically, it just pops up with the grey screen advising to restart. Sometimes it occurs after waking from sleep, sometimes it occurs after starting up, and sometimes it occurs in the middle of a task. I haven't noticed a specific pattern.
I ran the AHT and everything passed. I also ran Rember and the memory seemed fine in the test. I reset the PRAM and VRAM and the SMC after speaking with Apple. Finally, I reinstalled the OSX clean on the machine and the panics are still occurring.
This is the last panic report from the Macbook 1,1 2.0 with 1.25 GB RAM. I'm hoping it is the RAM and not something with the logic board, but am not sure if that can be ascertained without finding replacement RAM first.

Mac G5 ppc OSX10.4.11
Starting up from any boot disk will give me a kernel panic forcing me to hard restart.
Background:
After many freezes I ran disk utility and I get:
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
So I use my wife's Imac startup disk to boot it in order to repair but I get the dreadfull death screen (I know how to press the C)
I'm thinking maybe it's because her disk if for her Intel proc so I go and buy a copy of disk warrior 4, and same problem.
