Applications :: Can I Have Two Versions Of ITunes At The Same Time
Jan 23, 2010
I once accomplished this before on my old iMac G3 because I had two installations of OS X running on seperate partitions. I was able to run either version when ever I wanted. I want to do this again, but not have to have two OS X installs. Here's my reasoning I need iTunes 9 to sync my iPod because I have a touch, however I hate the bloat and would like to use iTunes 3 or 4 for just casual MP3 listening. I tried using Pacifist but iTunes 3 refuses to run. Was it my method or is it something to do with iTunes 3 not liking Leopard?

I am a new mac user (total convert--am on my second iMac in a month and am about to buy a macbook), and am having trouble with my itunes service. My first 24" iMac developed a clicking HDD, so I was lucky enough to be able to bring it back to the shop for a replacement iMac. I made a time machine backup of the first Mac and copied directly to the second one (which was flawless....how come I haven't been using macs prior to now? I've lost dozens of backups on PC). The only issue I've had is with iTunes--I keep getting an error that the iTunes library is newer than the version of iTunes on the computer. Is there anyway to fix this without losing my entire library of songs? I did make up a physical copy of the iTunes folder on my first Mac, just in case, so I assume that I could delete iTunes and reinstall a fresh copy, update it, and then copy the iTunes folder over to the new version. But this is a Windows approach to the issue and there is probably a simpler way of fixing this. Alternately, I could do the same but sync my iPod and copy everything to my library that way.

Every time I buy a TV show which has HD, I downloads two versions. I don't even want the HD version as I watch the shows on the way to work with my iPod. When I simply 'delete' the HD shows from my downloads list, they show up again whenever I turn on iTunes or check for old purchases. How can I stop iTunes from downloading the HD versions?

I have iTunes set to rip at lossless, which is fine, as I am willing to add terabytes of storage to my library if necessary. I have a 120 gig classic, I don't mind the fact that I can fit less songs in a higher quality bitrate on this device. I also just got a 8 gig nano, and I would like to upload everything onto it in 128 instead of lossless. I don't want to convery my who library as I would prefer to preserve it is lossless.

It used to work: You highlighted the songs you wanted to create an Apple Lossless version of, and they would show up underneath the AIFF version.
No longer.
iTunes 9 still could do this.
iTunes 9.0.3 loses them. It processes them, puts them into the right folder, but you can't see them in iTunes.
Questions:
1. Can I downgrade to iTunes 9.0 where this bug wasn't present?
2. Or do I have to manually import into iTunes? (This would erase the playcount, I suppose)
Or is there any other way around this bug? (or isn't it a bug, but a feature that has been disabled by Apple for whatever reason?)
PS: I found a place where I can download iTunes 9.0.1 for OS X. Are there any possible problem when installing an older version over a newer version, e.g. in regards to the library?

I basically know someone that is selling the 500GB Time Capsule which has Dual Band Wi-Fi etc, this is the link for it on the Apple refurb website
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/FB764B/A
All I want to know is, apart from the obvious 1 or 2TB of space available in the new versions is there any other differences? Both are 802.11n and are dual band. What I have noticed thought is that there are refinements which allow it to be backed up 75% faster than the previous generation and it says there is a 50% better performance over Wifi with 25% greater range?
How is this possible if they are both 802.11n? Also Is this true even when connecting via Ethernet? In terms of when I backup over Ethernet will it be 75% more faster? It'll be on my desk so I don't really care about the wireless capabilities. Lastly, will it work with my network, please click on this link as it explains my setup.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=853136
So just to reiterate, will I notice a difference in back up speeds when connected via Ethernet between the two versions. I'm getting it quite cheap, for about $50 Brand New sealed.

I have Mac Leopard and recently updated iTunes to 10.5.6.However, I found at least 3 older versions on my computer. Is it safe to drag them to the trash, or drag them into "App. Delete" without losing any important data?

Previously buying an HD TV show gave you the SD download too, so you could playback on older devices not HD compatible, or perhaps more importantly sync smaller files to iPhones/iPads if you wanted to get more content on sacrificing the resolution. Last few TV shows I've bought only the HD downloads, and no matter how much I fiddle with Prefs and the 'prefer HD when available' checkbox in iTunes Store 'Purchased' I cannot seem to get the SD to download.

when I was out trying to set up a development environment on my Mac. (SVN, Bug Tracking, etc.)
It's called Versions, and it's still in beta, but it seems really stable, and it's one of the best SVN clients I've ever used. I have no affiliation with the company or product at all, so this isn't a plug. I've just been using it constantly to manage some Xcode projects and a few other important documents between Macs, and I thought I'd share.

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and used the iWork '09 trial that was offered - and thought it was great. I made lots of new documents in the trial period but at the end of it, I thought I would see if I could install my old version of iWork 08 from a previous computer. I found that I could do this, but it would not open any iWork '09 files, so I had to buy iwork '09 anyway as I had done so much work with it. I got caught out I think! Did anyone else find this too?

How do I go about deleting applications? I have two versions of Safari on my computer. Version 4.03 or something like that, and the new 5.02. I know I upgraded to the 5 when it came out and I had assumed I was running that since then. Turns out I've still been running 4, and was having an issue with the "New Tab" not working. Thats when I noticed I wasn't running 5. (if you follow me?)... I just redownloaded 5 b/c I thought it would overwrite the 4 version, but it didn't, now I have two Safari's and when I do a spot light search 2 show up as well with no indicator as to which is which. If it matters, I am running Snow Leopard with everything up to date (at least I think? considering I thought this was...)

This evening I some how accidently "restored" a document I had been working on to a version I started about a month ago. I honestly have no idea how this happened since I hadn't even opened Time Machine when noticed the document was the old version (the program and document had been open on my laptop for days). Anyway, I thought maybe I could just go back to the version from yesterday or a few days ago, but it seems that once today's version is restored to March 28th's version, all subsequent versions are also restored. If there is any way to find a previous version of this document (that is not the March 28th one!), I would be estactic.

I don't mind iWork, but one thing that bugs me is having to specify all the time that i'd like to save the document as the microsoft version (ppt, doc, excel etc) instead of the apple formats. It also isn't that fun to then have to navigate to where the original file is and overwrite it. Any way to just have the apps default save your documents (whether new or old) as microsoft versions?

I have all my movies on an external drive. I used to be able to select a large number of them, drag them into iTunes and it'd import them all. Now, regardless of how many I select, it'll only import one of them. What's wrong?

I'm having a problem with time machine repeatedly backing up my /~/Music/iTunes directory. Everytime I plug in my drive, I get a 192Gb backup which will loop continuously. I've confirmed that it's this directory using BackupLoupe and have reset time machine, repaired the disk with no errors, completely reformatted my time machine disk, and continue to have these issues. Console shows no real issue, backupd process simply requests a 192Gb backup and proceeds with it. While I cannot be sure, this appears to have started sometime after the 10.6.4 update.

I have searched this, but I am not sure which answer is the best for this. I would like erase my hard drive and restore OSX. I then want to restore my iTunes library with as little headache as possible. I do not want to use Time Machine. I just want to make sure my iTunes will retain all of my music and still sync with my iPhone properly.

I've got a time capsule setup and I'm trying to keep my iTunes library on the time capsule drive to keep my MacBook hard drive free. I keep pointing the file path in settings to the library file on the time capsule but it will randomly fall back to the default location on my hard drive with no warning. Is there anyway I can make sure it STAYS pointed to the time capsule? It's a pain to have all my songs come up with "!" and have to go and fix the path in settings again and watch it "update" everything and reorder the files and then work fine again.
The time capsule is hosting my internet network so the second I step into my house I connect to that network so I would think iTunes never has to search for it and not find it for some reason. However, I would also like to have iTunes setup to see my library on time capsule when I'm out in the wild and talking to it over the internet. I haven't set up time capsule yet to be seen over the internet but I plan to do that tonight, I'm just wondering if I'll have to change the iTunes path every couple days back to my remote drive instead of it's default path.

I currently have a external hard drive on my wireless network and when I point two computers to the itunes library on that hard drive at the same time the second computer says the library is locked or I don't have permission to access the file. If I close the library on the first computer I can access the library just fine on the second.

When I was setting up the MBP, I opted to restore from a Time Machine backup and expected everything to go off without a hitch.
When I opened iTunes though, everything was blank -- no songs or videos were listed at all. My playlists were still there though but also blank.
When I checked my Music folder in Finder, everything was still there so I tried manually adding one mp3 to see if it would show up on iTunes. iTunes just played the mp3 but it still wouldn't show up in the Music list.

I have a 500GB time capsule that I sue to host my iTunes music and library. I pointed iTunes to the TC folder where the music is. Then I did control+click on the iTunes icon and pointed iTunes to the library which is also located at the TC. As long as I don't restart the computer it works fine, I can open and close iTunes and it finds the library ok. But every time I restart the computer I have to tell iTunes where the library is. Is there any way to configure iTunes so it does not "forget" the library's location?

Just upgraded to iTunes 9.0 and I'm running a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Every time I open up iTunes that stupid Firewall box asks if I want to allow/deny incoming connections.
Even if I allow, and verify it's in the list as allow, it asks everytime.
I've removed it from Firewall settings, no luck.
I've reinstalled iTunes, no luck.

Because I have Firewall enabled, everytime that I launch iTunes, I get a popup asking me: "Do you want the application "iTunes.app" to accept incoming network connections?" I click on "Allow." But unlike other applications where this process is only asked once, the first time you launch an app, I'm asked this every time.
I've talked with AppleCare about this, and the representative told me it may be because I've disabled "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library," because I prefer to organize my music folders my own way. She offered 2 work arounds:
1) Enable file sharing of my Music folder. It didn't work. The prompt still occurs every launch.
2) Reinstall iTunes. However, admittedly, she said this may not necessarily resolve the issue as it could simply be because I'm not using iTunes' file location by enabling "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library."
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Also, if I reinstall iTunes, will I have to re-add my Library to iTunes or are the relevant database/album covers files & folders retained?--it took a few hours for a collection of my size to be added.

I receive this error every time I tell iTunes to download the updates to my iPhone apps. Funny thing is, I only get the error once, if I click Update All again it goes through without a problem. This has been going on for almost 6 months through multiple versions of iTunes, iOS and a whole new iPhone setup from scratch.
