OS X V10.7 Lion :: Does Time Machine "restore" Change All Subsequent Versions
Apr 24, 2012
This evening I some how accidently "restored" a document I had been working on to a version I started about a month ago. I honestly have no idea how this happened since I hadn't even opened Time Machine when noticed the document was the old version (the program and document had been open on my laptop for days). Anyway, I thought maybe I could just go back to the version from yesterday or a few days ago, but it seems that once today's version is restored to March 28th's version, all subsequent versions are also restored. If there is any way to find a previous version of this document (that is not the March 28th one!), I would be estactic.
I need to restore my MBP contents from Time Capsule. Now I have done that once with (snow)Leopard using the DVD to boot from and then select the proper Time Machine copy. But now I have Lion, and that's a download. How do I do a complete restore from the latest verion of my Time Machine copy? The MBP can infact boot from it's HD, but there are some anomalies like a corrupted Finder window etc, so I'd like to restore the entire HD from scratch.
My Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage. I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD) kept rebooting. Â
So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot. How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD? When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still). Â
After reading several postings (especially url...) I thought to understand how to restore my Calendars from Time Machine after creating a big mess using iCloud..So far so good:
1. Open Finder and select Go > Library - using the Alt key- (so the folder "Calendars" is shown)
2. Enter Time Machine
3. Go to the date from which to restore But:
4. Then the Destination Window opens
So I try to find my way to, you might guess, Home > Library... can't be seen. It's hidden. And now the Go > (press Alt = ) Library is grayed out.So, how to make this work?

long time Mac user (original 128 Mac!). Somehow, not sure what I did, the sent folder in my POP email got checked to delete after one day. My sent folder has emails dating back to 2004. So, when I got up this morning, I opened mail, looked for a previously sent email and realized that only the ones sent yesterday existed. I need to restore. Fortunately, I have a time machine backup. However, when I go to Time Machine, find the correct SENT folder and try to restore, it tells me I do not have access to the file. I am not panicking ..yet.Â
I inadvertently deleted some messages from a RSS feed in Mail.It seems that they are located in /users/* username*/library/mail/v2/RSS.I entered Time Machine and navigated the this directory in a backup and selected 'Restore'.It seemed to work but when I went back into Mail, nothing had changed. I tried earlier backups but the same.

I have a MBP that is very heavily configured with lots of software. I want to upgrade to a Mac pro tower and keep my OSX and profile in tact. Can I perform an (upgrade) restore from my MBP to the new tower without any issues?

One of my co-workers is upgrading his old Mac Pro to a new iMac with a 256GB SSD and an internal 2TB ATA drive. He has a Time Machine backup to run the restore from, but his account is larger than the 256GB SSD. Ultimately he wants to keep his stuff on the 2TB drive and run the OS and his account on the SSD, but I couldn't think of a way to split that during the restore.
I just trashed several thousand files by mistake. I have backup on TM. How can I Restore my computer to what it it had on the last good backup?I have 10.7.3 OS, but this was an app. I don't have a disk since Snow Leopard. Is there a way to go to a date & say restore all?
I had an issue with my HD on my Macbook Air. The genius bar wiped my HD clean and re-installed LION. When I got home, I tried to restore the MB Air from my most recent backup. I keep getting the error "The backup cannot be opened."If this is a password protected backup, you may have entered an incorrect password or the backup may be damaged".Â
I know that I must have entered the right PW since it let me in to the Backup drive. I am using a brand new macmini server with the G-technology 8TB G-Speed raid solution as my backup system. So right now I have a MacBook air that has NONE of my stuff on it and it won't let me restore it either
To cure some problems I reinstalled the iMac install DVD, erasing the hard drive, then installed 10.8.5 and it's working. I then entered to the time machine to the date when I still was using 10.8.5 not the dreaded 10.9.4. But the restore button won't come on and respond. I did all this to get out of 10.9.4. Why won't the time machine restore?
I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.
So by accident I deleted all my address contacts on my mac by accedeint. (I was trying to stop my Mac user account picture from changing all the time). I knew I had deleted them but didnt think anything of it. I came to text someone today and half my contacts have gone from my iPhone and my iPad . But i dont know how to get them back on to my address book via time machine. Â
I have tried the simple going back to where the last backup was and hiting restore, but nothing happens. I can i get them off iCloud if timemachine wont work? or have i truly lost them?
I've been using some external HD (4Tb) to backup both my Mac and some other external HD's.Now one of my external HD is not working and I can't restore the backup of that HD simply because that HD is not showing when I open the Time Machine Finder. Any ideas?
If I do a destructive recovery, can I restore only certain things from time machine backup, like itunes library, mail settings, browser favorites, and a few programs.
I have lost my contacts. I can see them in TM, but they will not restore using the standard procedure. Restoring from iCloud is not an option. I understand that in Snow Leopard it was necessary to go to the following folder in Finder "/users/username/library/application support/address book. start address book " - and restore that folder in TM. However, that folder does not exist in Lion. How do I restore contacts using TM?
If you can restore applications from a Time Machine backup? I know it can restore files and folders or the entire system, but, this MacBook was just updated to Lion and only needs the applications restored, not the system.
I had a system instability issue and needed to restore my system from a Time Machine backup.Â
I tired restoring from several backups of different dates, with OS X Version labeled 10.7.3 (11D50b). I did so by booting into Lion Recovery HD and following the menu. However, once the recovery finishes copying files to the boot HD and reboots, the computer got stuch forever on the screen with Apple logo with the spinning wheel.Â
Luckily my backup still contained a backup from about two months ago with a different OS X Version, labeled 10.7.2 (11C74). Restoring from this backup completed successfully.Â
At least I did not have to build the sytem from stratch, but I wonder why restoring the system from the latest backup did not work.
I have to do a rollback of Lion back to Snow Leopard as I think that my hardware is too old and the system is not working without any troubles. Furthermore how do I use the Timemachine with Snow Leopard again after it was already converted to Lion structure? I need the backup to restore all my data.
I had the Lion up to date and I decided to restore an older backup I had made (Lion 10.7.2).
After hearing about Lion Recovery I held down command+r and was able to choose from a list of backups the one I wanted to recover. Â
I then decided, nah I want to go back to my latest backup I previously had. I held down command+r and instead of Lion Recovery I get Internet Recovery.Â
I get a spinning globe and a drop down with the wireless network the Time Capsule is on (the net is seperate to time capsule because Im using a usb modem). Â
I am using TM from another machine, (which has died) to restore folders onto a working system, some of the folders I need are in the User Library, but how do I display the User Library in TM?

With Firevault enabled, I attempted to reinstall OS X Lion from Recovery Mode. After being asked to enter the password to unlock the encrypted 'Mactinosh HD' disk, the reinstallation began. Everything seemed fine until the install process was supposedly finished, then a window popped up explaining that there was an error and to try again. I tried again and the same thing happened. I also tried to restore from Time Machine with no success (the same thing happened). I opened Disk Utility via Recovery mode and verified/repaired the 'Macintosh HD' disk and its permissions, but the reinstall/Time Machine restore still fails.
Then I erased the disk with Disc Utility, and attempted this again with no success. My computer no longer boots into OS X at all (it didn't even before I erased the disk via Disk Utility). It can only boot into Recovery Mode or Windows--I'm basically running a pretty overpriced Windows PC. I am using a 21" iMac with an Intel Core i5 processor, CPU @ 250GHz, have 4 GB of RAM and am (supposed to be) running OS X 10.7 Lion. Right now I'm using Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 bit on a Bootcamp partition on the same computer if that matters to anyone.
My iMac (2010) has been having tons of issues lately. More specifically, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks last week, it came back with S.M.A.R.T. errors after a scan, so it wouldn't allow me to update. So, in preparation for the HDD to crap out on me, I did frequent back-ups using Time Machine. Well, the day finally came and my iMac won't "turn on" anymore. When I turn it on, it sits at the Mac loading screen for several minutes and then just goes to a blank white screen.
If I buy a new iMac or a new macbook or whatever, will it be possible to use my Time Machine back-ups to restore everything on it or will it not allow me to because the operating systems are different? As mentioned, I attempted to make a restore on my friend's macbook that I purchased as a spare but when I tried, it came back saying "Different operating systems, cannot restore" or something to that degree. Is there a way around this? Do I have to somehow downgrade the OS on my new machine? Â I use iTunes for all my movies/music & Adobe Creative cloud so I can easily restore those on any machine but my desktop personal data, photos, etc are on the Time Machine restore.
Why is time machine saying that it cannot restore a file due to access persmissions when all I'm trying to do is restore a single file for my one and only user on the same computer that created the backup? Shouldn't that just work?
Tried to restore my address book (10.7.3), but I terribly failed. What files do I actually have to restore? Tried the all the metafiles (library) and both com.apple.addressbook.plist, but no success.
I can't restore my user account from the users screen because I get an alert that Mac OS needs something. I can't restore in TimaeMachine from the Admin screen because I can't see other users home folders.Â
