Applications :: Time Machine Can Make Bootable Cloned Image?

Dec 22, 2009

I finally get to open my first iMac in a few days and the excitement is killing me. So I decided to sign up for one of the workshops at the local Apple store. The girl told the group that Time Machine would make a perfect mirrored image of the hard drive in case of catastrophic failure. I asked her if this image was a boot-able clone and she said yes.

OS X Technologies :: Time Machine Partition And Cloned Offsite Backup

Jun 18, 2012

I am new to mac and I am exploring my back up options. I have a macbook pro running OS X 10.7.4 - Lion.It has a 750 GB internal hardrive.I have some data that I require to be online all the time i.e. on the internal hardrive (say 500GB) and additional data that can be on an external hardrive and accesed when needed (say another 500GB).I would like to back up all my data and also have an additional offsite back up.Is the following possible / a good idea, and how would I execute it: 2 Large external hard drives: With 2 Partitions - the first partician for time machine and the second for my offline data, these could be 1TB each for example.I would plug this in regularly to back up my macbook and if I needed to access the offline data.Another 1 TB drive that is a complete clone of the first. I would use this once a week to create the clone and then store offsite.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Create A Virtualbox Bootable Image File From A Bootable Usb Flash Drive

Jun 1, 2012

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.

I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.

I tried converting it in the terminal with:

hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg

but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.

I tried the terminal command:

dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

I tried the terminal command:

cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

OS X :: Sparse Disk Image Missing After Old Mac Cloned To New

Nov 6, 2010

I sent my old and dying machine in and the service place cloned it over to my new machine. All seems to be identical except a sparse disk image that I had to protect personal files. It's just not there. I haven't been able to get onto the old machine to verify yet if it's still there. Would the cloning process have left it off the new machine? Would it's location inside the library folder of my hard drive have become noticed during the cloning process? Could the tech people have cracked it open? Nothing earth shattering on it but still personal stuff.

Applications :: Make Time Machine Overwrite Previous Backups?

Dec 8, 2010

I have an external that I use with Time Machine, however I don't need incremental backups. Rather, what I would like is only one backup so that I can save space. In this backup, however, I would like specific things to change that change on my computer, as TM already does with its incremental backups. So basically I just want to condense the function of TM into one single backup that will update whenever I back up again. I realize this is not the primary function of TM, but is there any way to make this possible? Or is there any other software that would do this? I've heard of Silverkeeper and Retrospect, but never used them.

Applications :: Migration Assistant - Update Backup Bootable System Drive Image On External FW Drive

Sep 29, 2009

When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?

1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one

On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?

OS X Mavericks :: Using External HD As Disc Image For Time Machine?

Jun 3, 2014

I've been using an external HD as my disc image for Time Machine. Recently, both of my USB ports failed due to a juggling accident with cables connected to the ports. I'd like to send my computer for repair, but'd feel safer if I could backup before that.

Through file sharing and an ethernet cable I'm connecting to my old mac and can see the my HD for Time Machine, but how do I configure Time Machine to use that disc?

Hardware :: Time Machine Error - Disk Image Cannot Be Mounted?

Oct 29, 2009

My files were backing up for about a day, had 75gb of 100gb done and then my power went out. It cancelled out, and then when it came back on I tried to resume it. It started to backup 25gb, which I'm assuming is just the last 25gb that it had to do. Anyway, it did that for a while then stopped, and now when I try to backup, it says: "Time Machine Error: The backup disk image could not be mounted."

How do I backup the rest of my stuff? Do I have to start over? And is there a way to make it transfer faster? I mean, there's no way to directly connect it to your computer, is there? Also, in the Time Machine settings thing, it says "Available: 839.8GB of 929.5GB. Does that mean it has 839gb of my 929gb backed up? What happened to the other 71gb? I just want my stuff to be backed up, why is this so complicated?

OS X :: Make Backups For Time Machine?

May 15, 2009

My imac hard drive broke and I have managed to get about 90% of stuff I need back on the new hard drive.

I was using time machine for back ups. I have a freecom 160gb external hard drive.

I only seem to have one partial back up available which says its in progress.

All my other back ups have gone.

The external HD however is showing 26.8 gb of 153.4 gb available.

I assume all my previous data is on there but how do I get to it ?

I really now only want to rescue some excel files , pictures and movies. as I have loaded all stuff back onto my new internal HD.

OS X :: Converting CDR To ISO / Bootable CDR Disk Image To An ISO Disk Image

Sep 10, 2009

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso

Or

2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr

The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

OS X :: Cannot Burn A Bootable Image File Using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility Software?

Feb 21, 2009

I'm currently trying to burn a bootable image file using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility software. I have an external DVD Burner connected to a G4 Cube via Firewire. The issue is that when I select "burn" from the menu and point to the respective .dmg file, Disk Utility does not recognise the attached DVD burner. The burner is however recognised in Toast (which I also have installed). What might the issue be? I have searched high and low on the net in an attempt to diagnose the issue to no avail. Is there an alternative solution to burning bootable disks in 10.3.9?

Hardware :: Make Time Machine See My Airport Disk?

Nov 9, 2010

What I'm trying to do is use my Airport Extreme's attached hard drive (a Western Digital MyBook) as a wireless Time Machine disk. I know it's not officially supported by Apple anymore, but I did this for several months in my old apartment and it worked fine. I moved a few months ago, and just got around to setting up my TM disk now (I know, I know, I should have done it sooner ) Since it had been so long I decided to just erase the disk and start fresh. I erased it, connected it to my Airport Extreme, and it shows up fine in the Finder as a folder on the Airport. However, when I click Select Backup Disk in Time Machine preferences, nothing is found.
