I'm not sure if im doing the process right but whenever I try to resize a disk image it doesnt work, I go to disk utility/resize then I select the image I want to resize, nothing happens and I am stuck with the same size that is no longer big enough for my needs.

I have a 10 GB encrypted disk image on my macbook (type OS Extended (journaled)). I've pretty much filled up the space so I want to resize. I go into disk utility with the disk unmounted and 'Resized' it to 20GB. Then I mount it and go into the Partition tab. I drag the corner all the way down to fill up the space and hit Apply. It goes through the motions without error but it does not actually extend the partition to the resize. On the right next it then says something to the effect that the disk is read only and cannot resize the partition. The write status is read/write until I click apple....then it switches to 'Unmounted, read-only'.

Recently when I have been opening up images in new tabs that are larger than the actual window in Safari I haven't had to option for them to shrink and fit on screen by clicking the mouse on the image. So basically the little magnifying glass doesn't replace the cursor for me to scale down any image anymore.
Is there any option to enable or preference file to edit?
I'm looking for a tool that could allow me to resize (and for the full measure crop) images directly from the Finder context menu without using Automator?

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:
1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI feel stupid for asking this but why do some applications leave a disk image on the desktop after it is installed? you can eject it and it goes away but then reappears every time you launch the program again. I noticed this happens mainly with applications you get off the web such as Google Earth. It is very annoying because I like to keep my desktop clean. So my question is how do you avoid having this disk image appear every time Google Earth launches for example. Is it normal for some programs? or did I install it wrong?

I downloaded the file today and tried to launch the disk image, but when I do I just get a message that it couldn't be launched because it is 'unrecognised'. Why? I did a Yahoo search but couldn't find an answer. Would some bright spark amongst you please come to my aid?
I am using a new MBA running Snow Leopard, if that makes a difference.
I use Carbon Copy Cleaner to backup. I've set it to backup to a sparse, rewritable disk image. If I, say, delete a file, then do another backup, will the file I deleted still be in the folder it was in, or will it disappear as if the backup was cleared and redone?
View 2 Replies View RelatedOriginally I had 2 partitions on the internal 500gb hd in my MBP, one was 455gb the other was 10gb that I used to mess around on. I do not remember what format the small partition was in last, it may have been FAT32. I wanted to delete the small partition and consolidate into one partition. My OSX partition is formatted macos extended. I went to Disk Utility and deleted the small partition by selecting it and clicking "-." There was grey space where the partition used to be. No problems here. Most of the options in Disk Utility are greyed-out.
I cannot select a different partition scheme. When I try to resize the partition either by dragging it to cover the grey space or by manually typing in a larger size, there is no way to apply the changes. The "Apply" button is continually greyed-out (See Image). If I try to resize the partition and then close the window, Disk Utility alerts me that I have an operation in progress and that unsaved changes will be lost. Disk Utility is not letting me resize my main OSX Partition, it appears that I do not have appropriate permissions to make this change - I am the only user/admin of this machine.
I having trouble resizing an external harddrive of mine. It is a 500gb Lacie drive, and inside it has two partitions: time machine (250gb) and my stuff (250gb). I want to make time machine 150gb and make My Stuff occupy the remaining space. However, when I enter Disk utility, there is no dot between the partitions that I can drag. When I pull the corner, the disk gets smaller, but after resizing there is still a blue rectangle outlining where the old disk was. The partition "time machine" is used for time machine backups, but I have deactivated backups in Preferences, and Time Machine is currently "off". I have included an image for clarification. How can I resize the partitions the way I want them?

One of my internal drives has two partitions of 1 TB each.
Can I use Disk Utility to RESIZE one of the partitions to 1.75 TB?
Looking at the DU interface instructions, it says "To resize a partition on the selected disk, drag its resize control and click Apply."
However, Disk Utility says "To enlarge a partition, you must delete the partition that comes after it on the disk, then move the partition’s end point into the freed space. You can’t enlarge the last partition on a disk."
So, all I want to do is Reduce the size of the bottom / last partition; then, Increase the size of the top / first partition.
Can I safely do this by first dragging the last partition's "resize control" then dragging the first partition's "resize control"?
I recently replaced Leopard 10.5 with a clean installation (not an upgrade) of Snow Leopard 10A432 (SL) on my Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook (aluminum, 2GB RAM). Under Leopard 10.5 I was able to use Disk Utility (DU) to dynamically re-size existing volumes on USB hard drives. But under SL I am unable to do so. While I am able to replace all existing partitions on a USB drive with a new set of partitions and resize them prior to their creation by dragging the slider bars, once created, DU will not let me dynamically resize the new partitions. Doing so was easy with DU under 10.5. For example, after I re-partitioned a USB drive with DU under SL and created 2 partitions, I was able to make the top partition smaller by dragging the bottom edge upward from the lower right corner, but there seems to be no way (and no slider bars) to adjust the size of the lower partition to use the space freed by having made the upper partition smaller. In fact, although the upper partition reports a smaller size, when clicked on, the border around the upper partition still includes the range defined by its initial, larger size. There also seems to be now way (no slider bars) at the top edge of partitions that would allow them to be expanded/contracted from the top down. Has anyone else encountered these issues? Any thoughts/suggestions as to how to resolve them? Are these known issues? I have searched but not come across it as yet.

Have a 1TB internal Drive with 1 Partition (extended Journal), not a boot drive this is just for data, now want to add another partition (2 Volumes), in effect shrinking the size of the original so I have 2 equal sizes.
So Far I have used 450GB, so there should be enough room to do this right? Although when I go through the process, I get the message 'not enough space on drive'.
My idiot teenage son left his retail disks somewhere two states away in his dorm room. I am upgradings his hard drive from a 40 gig to a 160gig in his ibook. We are visiting family so I don't have acess to my disk either. Can I copy his drive to a dvd, and then copy it over after I install the new hard drive? I've done this before, but never with a dvd or cd.
He is running 10.5.8.
Well when I bought my Mac I said "O I bet I'll still use Windows a TON for various tasks." So I made a 100GB Partition for Windows. Now I'm realizing how dumb that was because I only boot into Windows once a month now, and I have only used about 10GB of that Windows Partition. So I have about 90GB free on that partition. Back on the OSX disk I only have 3GB free, and I need space. So, can I make the Windows partition smaller, or do I have to completely wipe it?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have some files that I occasionally send to my family members. The thing is, because they contain sensitive information (finance records, sometimes they're family videos), I don't like just uploading it to my iDisk.
What I've been doing is going into Disk Utility, creating a password-protected disk image, then zipping up that file. It's a few layers of security, and the 128-bit encryption seems good. The thing is, I'm not sure what settings to use.
Here's a screenshot of the window that comes up when creating a new disk image. What options should I choose from here? I can do a Get Info on all of the files I'm putting in the disk image, but it would be easier to have it auto-fit whatever I put in, eliminating any unused space. I'm not sure of what to put for Format, Partitions, and Image Format, and I'm surprised that I have to choose a size since I've heard there's a way to have it automatically fit the files.
Is there a way to select my files/folders in the Finder and have a disk image created from the selection?

I recently was having some problems with iTunes, (it was resetting and erasing the library every time i started it) so i decided to just save my mp3 files to my external hard drive and delete iTunes. My plan was to simply download iTunes again and put all my files back onto it.
However, when i downloaded iTunes, the disk image that apple gives you to set it up failed to mount. The reason, apparently, was because it was "Not Recognized"
I had no idea that an apple computer would not recognize one of the most common apple applications, but there you have it.

I am currently using OSX 10.5.8 Leopard and have run into a problem. When ever I attempt to mount a .DMG file, Finder goes unresponsive and will not re launch. The .DMG is downloaded from a verified clean source and the default program to open is the Disk Image Mounter Utility. I try going to /System/Library/Core Services, and I see the Disk Image Mounter Utility listed, yet when I attempt to open it, nothing happens and it is not even listed in the activity monitor. I have tried mounting several .DMG files and each time the same problem occurs and can only be solved by rebooting the system. I have just recently tried updating my software to the latest version and still no fix.

How can I do this since both have different file systems? Do I use Carbon Cloner? How do I restore the Windows partition if I do this?

This is mainly just one of those 'I always wondered' things. How secure really is the 128-bit encryption offered in Disk Utility? Is it virtually impossible to crack? Somewhat difficult? I'm not sure how it happened, but when I took my computer home, it just installed like that. I bought the iMac ex-display from PC World last august and it didn't come with any documentation, reboot disks or an apple remote. They say they don't have them with them, but they obviously do.
I keep forgetting to mount the .dmg every time I reboot, because I'm a klutz and becoming old at a young age. I was wondering if there's any way to automatically have the mac mount the disk image?
When I download a program or application, can I drag the disk image to the trash and eject the installer. This is an incredibly noob question, I know.
I just always end up with these random duplicate files and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
I need to Install Mac OS 10.4 onto an iBook G3, and it only has a CD-RW drive, so I made a disk image and if I copy it ove to the iBook, will I be able to install from the Disk Image on it's own Hard Drive, or do I have to put it onto a Firewire drive?
