Mar 15, 2012I cannot get my imac to stop automatically searching for updates. I set preferences to monthly, or turn it off - it doesn't matter I cannot change it from checking for updates constantly. Furthermore, once it's checked for updates I cannot dismiss the ones I do not need or want. It constantly asks me to install the updates even though I would have no use for them.
Apple wants cash to solve the problem. Since it began occurring after my last paid OS update, that's BS.

I am really annoyed by Preview app. Anytime I save a photo in my Download folder, it automatically opens it with Preview, whether I want it or not. When I quit Preview, it still opens the next time I download a photo. I can't find anywhere in Preview options such option to disconnect automatic opening of photos. How do I turn it off please?

Jun 1, 2012Parental control is active, but no restrictions on which applications they can use; just website restrictions and time limits.Allowed them to modify the dock. Each time they log in various applications automatically start and removing them from the startup list does not seem to solve the problem, and one is not even on the list. The "re-open windows" check box is NOT selected when they log out and I watched them quit the applications before logging out.
Example: for one account iTunes Helper always shows up on the startup list... I try to remove it in their account and it just pops back up... this appears to cause iTunes to autostart each time the log in... annoying.
Example: same account, the System Preferences always start up... fortunately it is locked so the kid can modify anything. But again, annoying.

Software :: IMac Hanging - Stop Process At Start Up?
May 21, 2008I am running the following system:
Apple Macintosh (Intel)
MODEL iMAC
PROC 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM 1 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM
DRIVE 300 GB
The hanging appears to have been caused when I accidently moved about 40GB of old photo's onto my desktop. Almost immediately I tried to cancel but all that happened is that the system has hung. Processer can be heard working in the background. Being new to MAC I am pretty stumped. Have tried the obvious forced restart using the power on/off button but no luck. Is there a way I can get in and stop this process say at start up?

Jun 19, 2008A couple of nights ago I set my iMac G3 (Blueberry) to stop automatic login at start up and put it to sleep. I did this because I didn't want my kids on the web in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. When morning comes, the computer is off. I try to start it but it won't turn over. When I push the on button, the button flashes on for a split second and I hear the crackle of static as if the computer is starting, but nothing happens after that. I tried plugging and unplugging the computer, but nothing helps.
It's like a car that won't turn over.

However, it loads at startup, and I have no idea how to prevent it from doing so. There's no option to configure it not to, I have tried looking for an entry in StartupItems and Login Items of my Accounts preferences. It is located in the Preferences Pane, its not really a standalone program.

Apr 16, 2012How the heck to I stop Lion from launching old docs when I open a new doc in MS Word, Excel, Preview, etc? I HATE this feature. Twice now I've edited the wrong document because when I click on a new Word doc, one that I worked on last automatic pops up on top of it. This is a ridiculous feature! Also, I don't need photos that I looked at yesterday magically opening when I open a new photo in Preview. That can be embarrassing if is someone is looking over my shoulder, if you know what I mean. Do I need to make sure I close all old docs instead of just quitting. Is there a way to just turn this frustrating auto open feature off?Â

Nov 6, 2010I've been trying to figure out how to sort this for ages now, and I just can't get to the bottom of it to save my life. This is the situation. I've just downloaded an album, and it ended up in my Downloads folder, so I moved it to the desktop, then played one of the songs in the album. s soon as I played the song, it opened up in iTunes and then automatically added the song to the music library. I don't want it to do that, I've spent the last couple of hours sorting out my library, adding album artwork, name changes etc and the last thing I need is things getting automatically added to the music library and cluttering and messing things up.

Apr 21, 2012When I first start up Safari - it automatically opens a huge number of tabs (the drop down menu on a tab right click shows an option to bookmark 99 tabs - and there are more tabs opened than I care to count). They appear to all be existing bookmarks; but could also be history.
At one point it would not let me close it at all & because it wouldn't close the OS would not allow a shutdown. So I had to do a hardware power off instead.
I played around with the setting and finnally - after severl hard reboots and a lot of try this & try that - I got it to allow itself to be closed.Â
But the 99+/- auto opens continue to be a problem. I've tried to completely clear my history, and several other property adjustments - but overall the behaviour remains very very flakely.Â
I want to make it my default browser on all my Apple things (Macbook / iTouch / iPad) but the very bad behaviour keeps pushing me back to Firefox - sigh. It feels like a very bad user design that cannot be trusted.Â
Are there some obvious know gotcha's with this browser? Or some standard settings that should never be touched? Or are these common bugs that just don't work right?
