This would be more for the technical side of the house, but why would the system try to update my iPhone and its not connected to the computer? is there a bug in the system?

I've tried deauthorizing and reauthorizing the computer, deleting the com.apple.iTunes.plist file, restarting, connecting at different times... nothing seems to work. I've got the most recent updates on both iTunes and iphone. iTunes works fine on its own, but just gives me the spinning ball whenever I connect my iphone.

I use my iMac (10.9.3) at home to Sync with my iPhone (7.1.1) to keep a full backup copy. I have the setting "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" active, and up to recently this worked nicely. However, I think since the update to iTunes 11.2.x there seems to be a problem:
- when I am not at home, I use my MBP (also 10.9.3 and iTune 11.2.2) to charge the iPhone.
- in contrast to earlier versions of iTunes, connecting the iPhone to the MBP causes iTunes to open. It is NOT possible to sync because the iPhone is connected to the iTunes library on the iMac.
- when I disable the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" on the MBP, the next time I connect the iPhone to the iMac iTunes does not open. And when I open it manually and "mount" the iPhone, the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" is disabled. It seems that the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" is now stored on the iPhone?
I keep getting the error message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer." How much space is necessary? I've been deleting caches and space-hogging applications for the past two hours and I still can't update. What should I do?

5. While plugged in iTunes recognizes the App updates I do on the device and changes them from Will Install to Remove status after the update. Also was able to do an OS upset to 8.1.1 while plugged in so it knows how to communicate to the device but just can't sync.
I did a restore of a saved 5S which only brought back abut 20% of my apps. In looking at the Apps section when the device is plugged I see my other 100+ apps and screen configurations but hitting the sync results in the computer not authorized rejection dialog.

I have an iMac that is my main computer. I download all of my music from iTunes on that computer and update my iPhone through that computer. I also have a MacBook that I use while traveling. Is it possible to sync the iPhone to the MacBook and update the MacBook with whatever is on the iPhone (and not update the iPhone with what is on the MacBook)? The MacBook is not updated (iTunes wise) and I don't want to erase what is on my iPhone. However if I could do the reverse of this then that would be better, that way I can download songs to my iPhone as well as my iPod to update for my vehicle.
