ITunes :: 4th Gen ITouch Library Directly To MacBook?
Mar 13, 2012
My son has a 4th gen iTouch and was using the family PC Windows desktop iTunes. The PC got infected and the hard drive was wiped out. Needless to say we are converting to the "Mac" side!!!! My son purchased a secondhand MacBook which he LOVES. He now needs to figure out how to get his complete iTouch library (purchased and other sourced music) to the MacBook iTunes. Â
We cannot access the PC hard drive to make a backup and the last backup he did only has about half of what is on it now.....( I know, back up regularly...my bad!)  I have read and heard so many things about NOT being able to do this and "no prob". I guess our concern is losing everything on his iTouch if he connects it to the MacBook.Â

If I'm playing some music from a playlist, and I decide I want to delete it from my entire collection, I can't don't it easily. Deleting it right from the playlist doesn't remove it from my library. I have to go hunt it down in the main "Music" folder which is a pain in the ass, especially with multiple tracks. Is there some way, when looking at a track in a playlist, that I can delete it from my entire library and put it in the Trash?

up until a few days ago...maybe after 9.0.3 update...on my macbook pro under snow leopard, im certain i could drag files from itunes library or a playlist into the trash.
if i drug the file from the library to the trash, you would here the trash can "eating sound" and it would be gone from the library (one step). if it was from a playlist, it would delete that file from the playlist but not from the library as expected. now, i cant do either. now i have to right click and delete the file/s and then click move to trash.

My iTunes library has apparently filled my entire iMac (according to the computer I have over 97 days' worth of music). I would like to know 1) how to properly save my iTunes library to an external hard drive and 2) how to use iTunes so that it uses the library on the external drive.

not sure if this question belongs in the applications section, but I have a problem/question with Itunes. I have all of my music on an external hard drive. How can I get Itunes to play the songs directly off of the external hard drive without copying every song onto my computer's hard drive?
I have done this:
1. File > Add to Library > Selected my external hard drive to add everything on it to my library
Result: At first it says 'Adding Files: Processing...' That process takes a few minutes considering I have a lot of songs. Then it says "There is not enough room to copy all of your songs onto the Mac OSX Hard Drive, but iTunes will copy as many songs as possible." or something along those lines. So then iTunes starts copying every single song from my external hard drive onto my computer's hard drive.
2. File > Import > Selected my external hard drive
Result: All of my songs are in hundreds of different folders for each album and artist they are in from when I imported those songs from my CDs. I cannot select my external hard drive as a whole, meaning I would have to go into each folder individually and manually (which would be ineffective and take hours) in order for the itunes library to have all of my songs.
Is there another way to do this without filling my computer's hard drive up with songs?!

Since a few months, I just can see mp3 files as an icon with the itunes symbol in it. Before, there was previews from the album cover and every time you click on it, the music was played in preview mode directly from the finder. Just a few minutes ago, I updated the version of my itunes to the currently newest one. That didn't give me a solution indeed.

I was under the impression that you could just put new songs right into this folder and they would show up in iTunes. I added a bunch of music files (correct format of course) to this folder and they don't show up. I still have to use "Add to library" and browse to the actual folder and song for it to show up. What gives?

I want to copy some educational audiobooks and songs for my child, but don't want he can delete it directly from iphone with simple whisk.I can't do it through parent control, alternatively players also all works with iPhone library, so if you delete something, it'll vanish everywhere in others iPhone player apps.

I freaking hate iTunes. Programs for simple tasks like uploading music onto devices should be efficently coded, not resource hogs that are incredibly unintuitive and needlessly complicated. Why can't we just drag and drop music and videos directly onto our phone like we can with just about every other media player? I already have all of my music organized just as I want it on my computer. Just let me drag the folders I want directly into the iPhone without having to bother with a 100mb download that runs like crap.
There's absolutely no excuse why such a simple function needs such a complicated program. Quote:..................

I want to share my internet connection from my ethernet modem through Airport.
How can I tell from my iMac that I have successfully connected my iPhone to the mac?
Or how can I tell if another iPhone from somewhere else isn't stealing my network?
Will they show up in the finder?

I have a problem here. I posted it in the 'iTouch' forum ,but no one seems to be able to figure out the problem. Before I schedule an appt., I figured I would give it one more shot.
I, or my parents, have a 12" iBook that they are trying to sync their iTouch too. It has worked in the past but as of now it will not recognize it. It will charge it but not recognize it on the desktop, finder, or in iTunes. However, if I put my iPod, iPhone, external HD on the iBook it shows up. That, to me tells me that the USB ports are good on the iBook.
Next, the iTouch shows up fine on my MBP as soon as it is plugged in.
Both the iBook and the MBP are running the the lastest version of leopard (10.5.2?) and the iTouch is at the latest as well (2.2.1.) I can't remember the numbers exactly. Im on a windows and none of this is sitting in front of me.

I've given my daughter my old itouch and have created an apple id for her with funds so she can download and update her own apps. In the settings, her apple id is correct, but when she tries to update/ download apps, the prompt is my apple id (i guess because it used to be mine) and we cannot find out how to stop it automatically prompting for my id and replace it with a prompt for her id. We sync all our music up to the same mac.Â

Hopefully someone will have the answer as I have searched high and low on this one. I have moved ALL my iTunes content (music, videos etc) to the Shared Music folder on my new WD MyBook World Edition 2 (just in case that's relevant info) and everytime my Mac attempts to load iTunes I have to repeatedly direct it to the library.xml file in the Shared Music folder.Surely there's a proper solution for this? Anyone else out there had this experience and has figured it out.I've noticed that it does this only the first time I open iTunes up, any subsequent bootup within a session is fine, but any restart of my Macbook Pro and I have to repeat this.

Total count is 729GB but that includes, everything in iTunes, Games, Apps, Music, Video, Movies, TV Shows, etc. How does everyone manage this, because right now I have everything on one external hard drive, but it is getting hard to manage. I just ordered a MBA 13" with the 256GB but I think I am only going to transfer stuff I watch listen to and use each day. I seem to spend hours fighting this thing each week, and just when I thought I was organized I find something else. How is everyone managing theirs?

Just got a new Macbook Pro and I want to transfer my I tunes playlist (songs, albums and podcasts to the new computer and then I will sync my ipod to the new computer. None of the music is bought or downloaded I simply copied from Cd's I own. The podcast are free downloaded one. I have tried dragging the library to a flash drive and uploading it on the new Macbook and all I get are the playlist folders not the contents. I have tried the share feature through Mobile me and that does not work either. I can always make it the topic of my "one to one" training this week but this is the last item in moving everything from the old Macbook pro so I can give it to our Daughter. Migration assistant did not seem to work either.

With the Airs not having large hard drives do you tend to store your iTunes on a separate drive? If so what do you use?

I want to transfer my iTunes library to a new MacBook that I'm buying today. What's the best way to do it? I need to sell this computer before I get the new one so I won't be able to put a cable between them. If I just copy across the music folder in my iTunes media directory, will this be enough? I have lots of album booklets and iTunes LP stuff that I want across as well. The other option is of course the DVD backup system through iTunes.
