Applications :: How To Delete Itunes Tracks Directly From Playlists And The Library
Jul 22, 2010
If I'm playing some music from a playlist, and I decide I want to delete it from my entire collection, I can't don't it easily. Deleting it right from the playlist doesn't remove it from my library. I have to go hunt it down in the main "Music" folder which is a pain in the ass, especially with multiple tracks. Is there some way, when looking at a track in a playlist, that I can delete it from my entire library and put it in the Trash?

I use iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on Mac. I spend some time googling and searching for solutions for my problem, but everything is either outdated or simply doesn't work. I have a smart playlist with all songs that are matched on iTunes Match, but which are below 256k bitrate. I want to delete them from the library, so I can download new 256k versions of them. This is supposedly possible by using Option + Delete, but that doesn't work for me. I also tried all kinds of other combinations like SHIFT + Option + Delete or CRTL + Option + Delete and none of them work.

I recently decided to delete all the iTrip stations from my library but I couldn't left click/drag to select them all because you can't.
Command 'a' doesn't help either because it selects all the songs in the library, where as I only wanted to select certain ones.

I want to transfer my itunes library complete with playlists and such from my macbook to new Imac. However, I did want to mention that currently the Itunes Library File is being shared by two users on this macbook. I want to transfer using an external hard drive. Is there an easy step-by-step process to do this?

up until a few days ago...maybe after 9.0.3 update...on my macbook pro under snow leopard, im certain i could drag files from itunes library or a playlist into the trash.
if i drug the file from the library to the trash, you would here the trash can "eating sound" and it would be gone from the library (one step). if it was from a playlist, it would delete that file from the playlist but not from the library as expected. now, i cant do either. now i have to right click and delete the file/s and then click move to trash.

I have just tried to add to albums to my iTunes library. The albums are in folders on my hard drive. Previously I just selected 'Add to Library' from the iTunes drop down menu. This would create a copy of the tracks in my iTunes Library. From there I could drag and drop them into a playlist.I select 'Add to Library' as usual. Select the folder and hit 'Open'. iTunes then creates a playlist for that folder but looks like it is playing the mp3's from their original folder location. It is not actually adding the tracks to my iTunes library.
As far as I know I have not changed any setting. I have been back in and revisited all of the settings options but can't see any issues there either. I have been using this 'Add to Library' method for around 10 years so am curious to find out what is wrong.

My son has a 4th gen iTouch and was using the family PC Windows desktop iTunes. The PC got infected and the hard drive was wiped out. Needless to say we are converting to the "Mac" side!!!! My son purchased a secondhand MacBook which he LOVES. He now needs to figure out how to get his complete iTouch library (purchased and other sourced music) to the MacBook iTunes. Â
We cannot access the PC hard drive to make a backup and the last backup he did only has about half of what is on it now.....( I know, back up regularly...my bad!)  I have read and heard so many things about NOT being able to do this and "no prob". I guess our concern is losing everything on his iTouch if he connects it to the MacBook.Â

My purchased songs do not appear in my library. And, none of my playlists appear. I haven't used my iPod in a while and I want to update it with new songs. If I try to sync it, I think all of the songs will be deleted from my iPod.

Basically somehow my iTunes got jacked up.. just the music part of it.. Anyway, they are all songs from my CDs or mp3's, but just as a failsafe, I would like to backup my entire iTunes library to my external hdd.
I would then like to delete all the songs from my iTunes, and from my iPhone. *edit* figure'd out how to remove all the songs from my iphone.. just unchecked all songs and sync'd.. now I just need to backup itunes and delete everything from it, then reput what I want back into itunes and resync.. sweet
After which, I would like to rebuild my iTunes library using my mp3's and CD's and basically start from scratch.. so that this time around I can properly name songs/albums/artwork/etc
Then I want to take this new iTunes library, and fill my iPhone back up with my new Library in Itunes..
so basically I just want to backup my itunes just incase for some reason I cannot find a particular CD or mp3 in my collection.
Just for the record, I am using a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB running the latest 3.1.2 firmware (jailbroken using blackra1n rc3)

When I used to delete a song from my iTunes library it would ask me if I wanted to also remove it completely from my computer. Now it no longer does and I cannot find a option to get that back. Can someone tell me where I can get iTunes to do this again?

Im new to the Mac operating system. I am proficient on a PC, but Macs have always captivated my attention. I finally gave into the Macbook. Anyways ---
The Automator application seems phenomenal in theory I just haven't learned all the ins and outs yet, but i see the concept that it was designed for (Jobs = Genius). Long story short I was streaming all of my music over from my PC and it got interrupted twice. I kept streaming to the same folder but it never prompted me to replace existing files of the same name. So I figured it would do it automatically. To my dismay that wasn't the case at all. I now have 9,000 songs and at least 4,000 of which are duplicates/Triplets. I wanted to know if there was some way to streamline the process of deleting and purging all these files out of my Music Folder/Itunes Library, Via the Automator program or any other program you know of.

I recently had a HD disaster, all my music (aprox 50000 tracks) got lost. With FileSalvage I got them back, problem is they all lost their ids, now they are displayed by number. Musicrenamer works on the ones with id3 tag, but Im still up the creek without the proper instrument. Itunes wont let me get the tracknames as the music wasnt imported using itunes. Anyone know if theres a way around this? Third party software to get tracknames? I need acces to gracenote or similar database..

All of my music has come from the iTunes store, and I have updated the ones available to non-DRM status for the $0.30 that Apple charges. Now my question is, is there a quick way of seeing which songs I have that still have DRM on them? I think it's only a few, but I'm trying to figure out without clicking CMD+I on over 1,000 songs.

There are a couple of my puchases from iTunes that didn't make it over to my new laptop when I transferred everything from my old laptop. The old laptop has now died, so they are probably lost forever. I really don't mind re-purchasing these tracks (it's only a handful), but when I look for them in the iTunes store, there isn't the option to 'Buy', it only says 'Purchased'. How can I get iTunes to let me buy these tracks again?!

everything's in iTunes Plus now and of the 400+ DRM'd songs I had before, I still have 10 left. After the initial wave of iTunes plus upgrades, I was down to 40 or so. More and more came in until now I'm down to ten. Am I going to be able to upgrade these soon? I see the songs are available for purchase in iTunes Plus...

I know some of you out there will probably think I'm nuts, but please read the whole message first.
I have been disabled for a number of years, and recently a friend of mine purchased for me a refurbished MacBook Pro 15" 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo laptop, which, as you might guess I love, since my last Mac laptop was the 1999 PPC G3 400Mhz that croaked about 5 years ago.
Fortunately, before that late, semi-great machine died, I was able to copy to an external drive my entire iTunes folder, which contains the "iTunes Music Library" file as well as the "iTunes Music" folder with more than 1,000 songs in it. I do NOT have any written documentation on my playlists.
Now, many years later, I have this great machine that I love, and I cannot for the life of me figure a way to import my Mac OS 9 iTunes PLAYLISTS into Mac OS X iTunes 9. Additionally, the song file folders, structured perfectly in Mac OS 9, now get recreated in truly bisarre ways in iTunes 9, where I get multiple folders by the same artist if that artist has ever done a duet with someone, and soundtracks have been broken out into individual folders by each artist on the soundtrack, instead of all the songs being placed into ONE folder with the soundtrack's name on it, as it is in the Mac OS 9 iTunes Music folder.
All I want to do is recreate my library and playlists as they were in Mac OS 9, using iTunes 9 in Mac OS X 10.6.

Ive got a compilation album in iTunes, with it sorting by artist. I got round that problem by putting an abbreviation of the album name at the beginning of the artist title, but now the track numbers are not in order like all my other albums.

In order to burn an album you can't simply click on the album cover and tell it to burn what's stored in the library... you have to make a playlist from it and burn that.
But it has a mind of it's own. You can't sort the list and burn it the way you want it to.
I even had it sort by track number and it burned it out of order.

So now that all iTunes tracks are supposed to be DRM free. Does iTunes machine authorization still matter? I can't even see where I can authorize/unauthorize the machines anymore when I log into my account-though iTunes does report 3 machines authorized.
