I just burnt a DVD with my Macbook Pro. Now when I inserted it into my white iMac it will make a noise like ( tik tik tik) and then eject it. I tried rebooting, cleaning the DVD, inserting it into my macbook and then inserting it into my iMac and still it won't read it. What can I do?
View 7 RepliesI have normal vision and have found the ical update on OS Lion to be very difficult to read. As a photographer using a mac monitor for pre-corrected color, brightness, and contrast, changing the appearance of monitor is not an option for me. I am hopeful Apple will solve this design problem immediately and embed it in their OS update. It's not the size of the font that matters, it's the fact that light gray is on a white background and that makes reading it a nearly self-defeating process.

So my 20" 2.4 Imac crashed on me twice tonight. A box popped up telling me to hold down the restart button for several seconds to restat. The second time I did this it just sits with a white screen and give three loud beeps over and over. Is there a fix for this? Is it my ram? I'm at a loss.

The processor I would like to use is a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5750 processor, which would give me 2 additional cores as well as a small speed bump from 1.83 ghz to 2.0 ghz. I figured compatibility should be fine considering the FSB speed (667 Mhz) is the same. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone tell me if this will work for sure?

The drive will try and spin up, make a groaning noise a couple of times, then eject the disk. I have tried the same disk in a friends MacBook Pro, and 2 friends PCs and there drives read the disk perfectly. I have tried the disk in both windows and mac, and neither will read the disk. I have also tried cleaning the disk. My iMac is a 2.4ghz Aluminium 20incher... any help would be much appreciated, as i am currently having to use my friends MacBook Pro (unibody) to play the game and he is getting a little anoyed!!

I took sometime and browsed around on the Web and found some great information plenty going on about how wonderful they are on PC"s but very little with regard to converting and or opening and playing these Windows based files in the OSX environment. Any suggestions on a viewer or converter that I can use with my iMAC, that runs transparent? And, that doesn't take an instrument rating to install and run.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOK, taking another look at my booting problem (where the computer sees neither optical nor hard drive, though both work perfectly fine in target mode): It has now become apparent that a firmware upgrade was started on this machine (before I got it) and it was corrupted. For example, all conventional keyboard commands in start up mode (open firmware, c key, option key to select drives) do not work. so I downloaded (from Apple) the "firmware restore cd 1.4 for Imac 5,1" (my machine) and happily set about to install it thinking i had the solution to my problem. Followed instructions exactly (burning the .dmg to a cd disk, inserting with power button held to trigger firmware update/install mode). Computer went into firmware update/install mode but -- refused to spin the disk in the drive! just "ca-chunk ca-chunk" ad infinitum. Of course i want to fix this myself, not pay apple $800 or so (assuming it is fixable). how to get this firmware restore CD to load? Alternatively -- will the computer automatically boot from an external firewire drive even though it sees no other disks? (certainly works fine when in target mode

When I play a DVD movie, everything is fine for about an hour and then the drive says that it cannot "Read the Disc". I have had the problem with 6 different DVD's so I don't think the media is the problem.

This is perplexing me: I've only had my iMac 21.5" for a week. I posted here about the white screen issue after the 1st s/w update. Now, on every restart I get the same *but only when* my USB ext HDD is plugged in; unplug it & it starts fine, plug HDD in and it mounts, checked external HDD with disk utility - AOK. Never had this problem with my old 20" iMac! It's still in DoA period so is it best to get it swapped out?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI ran software update and got (iPhoto, itunes, Security patch) so I ran it and downloaded everything except the Intel Security Patch. So I restarted and decided to try again. Restart didn't work as it got stuck and I had to reach around and restart by holding down the power button. When it came back up, I got the white screen with the grey apple logo and the spinning clock like icon..... spinning and that is where I am stuck, left it off all night and tried it in the morning, same thing.
I did try:
-resetting pram (nothing happened)
-restart in safe mode, holding down shift key (nothing, stuck on screen)
I would try to start up from the OSX disk except I have a DVD in the machine. I am thinking it was that security update that didn't download fully that is doing this but how do I get the imac, "unstuck"? or how do I manually eject that DVD to put in a OSX start up disk?
Have purchased a used white intel core two duo imac. It's not in my possession yet.
1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
3. My understanding is that by using migration assistant, it will transfer all of those files necessary for a particular application...is this correct, and if so, will it then put those files where they should be?
Three times in the last week or so my iMac's screen has just turned white (once with almost a ribbed pattern with thin grey vertical stripes evenly interspersed) and become completely unresponsive, with the only option being a hard reset. It's happened under a variety of conditions: while surfing in Safari, while working in Aperture, and once without doing anything (I was on the phone sitting by my computer). Each time I've restarted it everything seems to work fine for a couple days, but then it happens again. I've never seen anything like this and I figured after the third time it's time to ask for help. Does anyone have any ideas?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the white iMac, not the brand new model, and I always thought that the audio out would accomodate a mini-plug OR an optical cable. Right now I was trying to switch from a mini-plug-to-RCA to optical (TOSlink), but I see no way to fit the optical cable into the mini-plug (headphone) audio out on the iMac. Do I need some kind of adapter? Do I need to remove something in the audio out jack?

A friend gave me a CD of photos to look at. It mounted on the iMac desktop but was blank, although it had zero space available. I ran Disk Utility. It reported that the CD needed to be repaired. I then inserted it into my ancient Mini and the photos showed up, no problem.
First and foremost I should tell you that I am a new convert from Windows.
I'm currently running OS X 10.3 and find that I can not read any of my DVD+R discs but I can read my CDRs just fine. My guess is that the optical drive is simply too old to recognize the DVD+R format. Is this correct?
My alternative to this would be to purchase a firewire external drive enclosure and put one of my newer dvd burners in it, but would I be able to boot from this type of connection or do I have to actually buy a "superdrive"?
The reason I am asking is because I am not sure if I can discuss selling my iMac.

View 3 Replies View Relatedso i just got a new 24" imac (midrange) and after instaling the software updates, wanted to get office 2004 on it.
i installed it on my powerbook years ago, on my dad's imac last year, then again on the powerbook after i had to wipe the drive.
now i put it into the superdrive and it keeps on whirring over and over again without actually reading it. it ejects with some help. i put in other dvds and they worked fine. (i put the office dvd into my dad's imac and my powerbook and they were fine, ran setup assistant)
anyone know the problem here? new imac has a bad drive?
I recently began using my computer again after having to replace the power supply. Since then, my computer has refused to read cd's. It doesn't recognize data cd's at all. For audio cd's my computer mounts them but won't play any of the files and iTunes won't play them either. When I try to play audio cd's in iTunes I can hear combo drive doing something. I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware issue.

While the majority runs without any problems, quite a few cannot be read, although they work without any problems on my HiFi and on other CD Drives. All Software is up to date and the Drive is just a few months old.
