First and foremost I should tell you that I am a new convert from Windows.
I'm currently running OS X 10.3 and find that I can not read any of my DVD+R discs but I can read my CDRs just fine. My guess is that the optical drive is simply too old to recognize the DVD+R format. Is this correct?
My alternative to this would be to purchase a firewire external drive enclosure and put one of my newer dvd burners in it, but would I be able to boot from this type of connection or do I have to actually buy a "superdrive"?
I bought a second hand iMac G3 off eBay for a pretty good deal, and am trying to figure out where the buzzing is coming from.
It doesn't come with any CDs so I don't think I can do a hard wear test, but I've noticed it is happening even when the display is off, and is in sleep (although it gets less audible in sleep).
Another thing I noticed is that in OS X it will stop after a while of not using it, despite the screen being on and still showing the image, is this the hard drive stopping? When I go and touch a key or move the mouse it starts again.
I have been trying to upload ubuntu on imac g3 graphite 600 mhz model with the cd they sent me it goes through the steps loads what it wants makes the music sound but all i have is a black screen???? any ideas what to do? Cannot see anywords the desktop nothing.
Until yesterday, my iMac G3 slot is working fine, but today, I can't power it up. When I press the power button, the light just flash and then went off. I've opened it up to check the PRAM batt and also checked if there are any shorts on the logic board. All looked ok to me. The HDD is working fine and I supposed the power supply unit is fine too.
I just restored an old 1999 G3 iMac DV 400MHZ with slot-drive from the dead, and I feel it lacks a bit of power under it's hood. I already put RAM and HDD but the computing power is just not enough. What I want to do is go into OpenFirmware and speed up the cpu and possibly the bus, I remember doing so on my sawtooth but I can't find the code plus that was a G4 and now I have a G3. I also found this page [URL] that shows how to mechanicaly overclock up to 1GHZ but I want to be able to do it non physical if possible. I know this isn't the hot topic now a days but maybe some of you will remember what they used to do and feel some nostalgia(is that a propper word?).
I have a charcoal iMac DV SE 500 which won't complete a proper start. The machine chimes and begins to start, and then clicks off again before anything can show on the screen. It won't start in Target Disk mode, and zapping the PRAM (starting with alt/apple/P/R, right?) has no effect. Does this sound like a dead PRAM battery, a dead 'Power/Analog' board, or a dead hard drive? Can anyone give me an idea of how much it would cost to fix, and recommend good, reliable, cheap UK repairers It's not worth much, but I have a friend who'd love it if it can be restored to life, and I'd like to get some of the files off it if it's not the drive.
I have currently acquired a few old Macs. I have got an iMac G3 SE with a slot loading drive. The computer is fine all barr the slot load drive - it has died. I have also got a PPC Mac Mini with a suggested logic board failure.
Does anybody think there is a chance i could replace the broken slot load drive in the iMac with the working one from the mac mini? i don't want to start opening the iMac up if someone already knows theres no chance it would work.
does a doublelayer disc work in an iMac G4/800 17" with the original built in superdrive? I want to burn a dl-disc with 7GB on my macbook and give it to a friend who owns that machine.
So i just got this imac g5 and planned on putting leopard on it since it has 1.5gb of ram. So i plop the dvd in and it doesnt read, but it will read other dvds and cds what gives?
I just got a G5 power mac (dual 2.3GHz) and bought one of these: [URL] as an airport substitute. When trying to install the card it doesn't appear to fit in the PCI slot. Am I right in thinking it should fit? Since it's a PCI card and the G5 has PCI/PCI-X inputs?
The Graphite 733mhz PM G4 has only 3 ram slots. But the "fourth" one shows up on my system as "empty". Does this mean that it may be physically possible to put another ram slot in there? I'm confused by the limitation -- though I heard that Mac OS9 could only recognize up to 1.5gbs of ram.
Initially it would intermittently not recognize the RAM that was in the 2nd slot (not the on-board ram). Now it does not recognize the 2nd RAM slot at all. I know it's not the stick, as we've put different sticks in to test.
I have a 12" PB and latelly became a nightmare with the stuck CDs. Usually it does not want to eject CDs/DVDs from companies but it handles fine virging cds/dvds. ?? Probably there is some formating in the industrial kind of CDs outside, who knows.just want to open this thread for people with the same problem. If the drive tries to eject but can't and end up mounting the CD again. Just take another CD and when you press eject again push that CD into the slot but just one third and you will see the stuck CD coming out with no problem as well.It seems there is a sensor or something that obviously does not work well. I inserted a virgin CD and the drive worked just fine and ejected later on, but a CD as the installer for my Linksys get stuck and some other softwares too.
I have a g4 slot loading drive and I am fulling aware the outside casing would be wrong... but that isn't much of an issue, I can replace the panel/casing section with a new panel to take care of that... i just want to know if it is possible as far as hookups etc are concerned.
I have a Powerbook G4 that I wanted to upgrade to 1.5G from 512MB. So I added Corsair 1GB DDR RAM to the notebook and it seems to have issues recognizing both at the the same time. When I put both of them in together, it never seems to recognize the bottom slot. Putting in the 512MB in the bottom w/o the 1GB the Powerbook boots up fine. Putting in the 1GB by itself and it gives beeping noises on bootup, but it'll boot up if I put it on the top slot.
My TiBook 15" G4 (OSX 10.4.8) has an Airport slot but no Airport card. I got a Sonnet Aria Extreme card but it shows nothing on the TiBook not in the menu bar or in System Profiler. I've tried restarting with and without the card inserted. The Sonnet support guy suggested everything I had already done and then came up with "Check under the keyboard to be sure the cardbus connection was intact." Seems fine. I'm assuming the card has the Broadcom chipset because they swear it works fine on the 15" TiBook G4.
Also, Airport software is updated, but doesn't show or function because it doesn't see any wireless capability.
Like everybody else who gets frustrated, I've also done everything again 4-5 times, just in case the computer or the card might forget that it doesn't work.
i just bought a used Ibook g3 800mhz, and i does not come with the airport card, i was searching on ebay and came across this:http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Airport-Co...QQcmdZViewItemwhat you think of that? would it work as good as a original appel cardwill ti damage my computer?or should i get an original apple card?i got this email from them;Yes, I can gurantee it will not damage your Mac. My card and the apple airport card are both 16-bit PCMCIA cards and followthe standards of PCMCIA. Moreover, the airport slot conforms tothe standards set forth for a PCMCIA receptacle slot.I have DOA protections for buyers stated in my listing. I do not have a warrantly because I have never sold a bad card or had areported failure. Warranties are based on failure rates,
since the last week or so whnever i am on my computer a warning comies every 30 min or so.... it says.. CT loader... tool bar has not been tested on this version...
what does it mean and what do i do abt it... i had leapord as os... yesterday i uploaded snow leopard and and it still shows the same...
I would like to set up a mac pro using Slots 1 & 2 for RME ADAT digital audio cards and move the graphics card (geforce GT 120 512mb) to slot 3 or 4 so that I can maximize slot speeds for multiple audio playback via logic. Is this possible?
I have 10.5.8, have installed leopard to my computer, and now i keep getting the same message "Application Loader cannot be installed on this computer." I have an older power mac that doesn't have intel, but is there any way I could get a version of application loader that works for my computer?
trying to download a .epub book. The .epub goes to my Download file and when I click it Application Loader pops up asking for my Apple ID and password. It says it cannot find a registered user with my user name. I don't know why it even pops up. It says its purpose is to help me prepare my apps for sale on the App Store. I just want to open the .epub.

This is not related to the other bluray thread on here. I am looking for a slot loading Blu Ray drive (I do not want write capability) for my iMac Aluminum. I know fastmac sell a Bluray drive for $999, but that has the unnecessary write capability which jacks up the price. So, does anyone know where to get a slot loading BD-ROM for the iMac?
As title, i've searched (on here and on Apple.com). Asked at my local Apple store and I can't find the answer. Apologies if it's been answered before, I just cannot find it.
The screen/crt of the imac that I have been using since about '98 went black - this actually happened a couple times previously but I was able to get back in (no idea - one of those things where out of frustration you just start pushing everything at once and it suddenly pops back on). I have tried everything - the internal battery, that little button on the motherboard (not sure if that is what it is called) that resets everything, the connection of the main power button on the front, etc. I am fairly sure it is stuck in sleep-mode or something (no beeps, hard drive doesn't make the usual booting-up sounds but you can tell that it is receiving power) but after months of wasted effort I finally gave up. I bought another slot-loading G3 and would like to swap hard-drives between the two - I have taken my old G3 completely apart so many times that I am totally comfortable with that aspect but have hesitated because if I somehow blow this one I will be left with nothing.
