OS X :: Restoring Firmware To Imac - Not Getting CD To Read
Apr 2, 2010
OK, taking another look at my booting problem (where the computer sees neither optical nor hard drive, though both work perfectly fine in target mode): It has now become apparent that a firmware upgrade was started on this machine (before I got it) and it was corrupted. For example, all conventional keyboard commands in start up mode (open firmware, c key, option key to select drives) do not work. so I downloaded (from Apple) the "firmware restore cd 1.4 for Imac 5,1" (my machine) and happily set about to install it thinking i had the solution to my problem. Followed instructions exactly (burning the .dmg to a cd disk, inserting with power button held to trigger firmware update/install mode). Computer went into firmware update/install mode but -- refused to spin the disk in the drive! just "ca-chunk ca-chunk" ad infinitum. Of course i want to fix this myself, not pay apple $800 or so (assuming it is fixable). how to get this firmware restore CD to load? Alternatively -- will the computer automatically boot from an external firewire drive even though it sees no other disks? (certainly works fine when in target mode

Intel X25-M 160GB, how do I find out if it has the latest firmware v1.5 from Dec 8, 2009. And is the Solid State Drive Toolbox v1.3 from Mar 22, 1010 worth downloading?Intel's download/support page doesn't tell you how to know if your SSD has the latest firmware or not.

I was travelling and added a firmware password a few months back, I now want to disable this to install Ubuntu on a partition of my MacBook - but there are no directions how to in the utility.I looked at the Apple doc I originally used to set the password: [URL]/HT1352, and I cannot find a companion document for taking it off. So, if anyone knows how I go about doing this,

When given a video card update (esp from using windows) it almost always improves the video card. Apple releases the flicker fix update and I don't have a flicker issue. No screen issues at all really.
I feel like it's Russian roulette. Update or not? I know some people will say don't fix what ain't broke, but what exactly is IN the fix? Is it exclusively for the flicker issue or does it update/upgrade other aspects on the card? Mine has the ATI card in it.

I have 2 discs that came with my imac, which I believe are the system restore CD's. Any tips on going through the process? I might be selling my iMac so I want to wipe out the drive (320gb).

It's avihappy again and I have another survey for you all. As you can see, there is now an iMac 4850 EFI firmware update available via software update. So can you: Find a test that will cause the iMac to freeze up. Do the update. (make sure you actually run the firmware updater tool, it may not run automatically when you install the update from Software Update.) Switch to WiFi. Do the test again. See if the iMac freezes!

I got my wife the new iMac with a Radeon 4850 to replace her ancient PC (and I meant ANCIENT) and she had massive issues with lockups due to overheating, especially when playing fullscreen 3D games like World of Warcraft in Mac OSX or any of her Windows XP games in bootcamp.
After the EFI Firmware Update 1.4 she's had far less issues, but she's still had 1 lockup (playing Diablo 2 stangly enough, a very old low detail game) and graphical glitches in WoW which caused her to stop playing out of fear of a lockup before it could happen.
Her computer temps are still extremely high but our house temp is only 72degrees.

my friend bought a new C2D iMac cause he thought his G4 was broken. So I took it off his hands and am trying to get it back to a working state. I'd like to try to restore OS X but if I can't then i'm just gonna install Ubuntu Currently when it boots it just goes to a gray screen with a small folder in the middle with a blinking question mark and Mac OS 9 logo. Next to my 20" monitor it looks like the 17" version and as far as I can remember it has a 1.25ghz CPU.

I have an iMac that I have had for about 2 years. It has alot of stuff on it, and everything that I need I have put on an external hard drive. I was wanted to completely erase everything off of the imac now. I have the install discs it came with. But I never set up my time machine. I have googled to find how to do this and all I see is through time machine but I never set it up. So how do I completely restore it so it is fresh with nothing on it besides the OS?

I know this affects iMac users than any other product so I thought it would be worth mentioning that Apple has released a Bluetooth firmware update found in Software Update: This update provides bug fixes and better compatibility with the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard. It installs on all Macintosh systems with Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset. Those who are having trouble, download and note any improvements for others who are having the same problem.

After the firmware update yesterday, the finder on my MacBook Pro is no longer able to transfer files from my iMac to my MBP or vice versa. Most folders on my other mac are visible, but some crash the finder, transferring files gets part of them moved over, but then it stalls and crashes the finder.Seems like a serious bug. Or has the firmware update simply removed the file transfer possibility at all?Reinstalling Lion wasn't even possible as the recovery program stalled as well. It was not possible to choose a language.

I have one of the original MacPros 1,1 2x266 currently running OS X 10.7.3. and indicating ROM Revision 3011. When I try to run this update, it fails saying I need OS X 10.6. Do I need the update (I presume yes since my ROM rev is lower), if so how can I install it?
Info:
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I ask this question as a new Apple user with a pretty rocky start. I'm on my second defective iMac (yellow tint, stuck pixel, smell, etc). Because of 2 defective iMacs in a row and another replacement in the near future, I now need to learn about how to transfer settings/data from one Apple to another most efficiently--if at all. I previously understood it would be best to simply not use Migration Assistant on a new iMac, even though as a new Apple user I really have little data history to transfer over. So with my next replacement, and hopefully the last, I would start from scratch with new application installs, OS settings, documents, etc. The logic as explained to me is that migrating would transfer over files I would not want on the new iMac. However, when I spoke to Applecare over the phone tonight, I was told that while I could Migrate, I should instead Restore all my settings/data from a Time Machine backup from this defective iMac to the new one. As I understand it from how he explained it: with Migration you will simply transfer your old data/settings on top of what exists on the new iMac, but with a Restore the new iMac will wipe out whatever is on it (is there anything to wipe out on a new iMac?) and then transfer your old data/settings. Is my understanding of those 2 terms, Migration and Restore, correct? And is Restoring the preferable thing to do in that it doesn't (or shouldn't?) bring over any unnecessary files into the new iMac and saves a great deal of time or should I still start completely from scratch?

I did a software update last night and the firmware update attempted to install. Unfortunately, it errors out with the message:
Necesary resources are missing, corrupt, or do not have the correct permissions. Delete the iMac Graphics Firmware Update and re-download it and run again.

I was reluctant to update my 27inch i5 iMac with the new graphics card firmware update since I wasn't having any flickering issues. I finally caved in and did it thinking that nothing bad will happen, well of course something did. Ever since I updated it yesterday my computer makes a distinct and random popping sound from the speakers, it is soft but audible in my quiet room when I am working and it is driving me crazy.

I'll finally be selling my circa-2005 iMac to my sister and buying one of the new ones. But I was wondering if anybody could point me to a really simple tutorial on how to restore/clean install my computer. I know how to get all my stuff off of my iMac and onto the new one. But I cannot locate the Tiger disc and only have the iMac install discs. Can I do a clean install with just these discs?

I was wondering how would I do a system restore on my Leopard upgraded (from a Tiger OS) iMac? I have done several google searches and i keep getting various answers (which there are different ways but I just want to restore my iMac to factory setting) Would I use my leopard or tiger disk, and how would I go about doing a system restore? What I wanted to do was do a system restore on my mac and upgrade to Snow Leopard. There are alot of scattered unimportant photos, movies, and games on my mac and it feels like a system restore would save me alot of time.

So my mom just bought an iMac from her friend's mother, and I'm trying to restore it to factory settings using the Installation disks that came with my MacBook Pro. I just inserted the discs and clicked "Install Mac OS X" and then it gives me a "Restart" button, but I cannot restart it without putting in the Password which I do not have. Is there another way to do this?

Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file. Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.

Every time my iMac restarts or boots up, it brings me to the OS X installer page since last night.
I have done the disk utility check and my hard drive is ok. I then tried restoring from network which stops half way and reboot. I have also tried restoring from Time Machine but it has also stopped and rebooted several times.
My iMac is currently running OS 10.9.3
21.5-inch iMac With the following configuration:
2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive
