when i plug in my external thats programmed to my mac, on a windows based computer i cant seem to read the hard drive. is there a program or somthing where i can detect it and transfer files between it?

I am trying to access a PC formatted external hard drive, however when I attempt to mount it I get a message saying the drive is not recognized and if I want ti initialize, which i believe if I execute will remove the files I am trying access..Is there a way to access the files on the external hard drive...it is a avi file i need to edit.

after reformatting i reinstalled all files that came with the drive
disk utility sees it as a usb mass storage but the drive doesnt show in my computer

I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. I figured it was the motherboard and that is way too costly to replace. So I just bought a Macbook and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

I've just got a new external HD, but it's not being recognised by Mac OS X (10.5.7). I assumed it was because it was in a Windows format, so booted Windows, but it then turned out it wasn't formatted at all. View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a macbook pro with time capsule and was using the TC as a hard drive. Macbook pro logic board has gone so until I can get a new mac, i have a windows vista laptop. I have connected to the TC, wireless working, mapped the TC in the Z:drive. When I go into the TC drive, i can only see the backed up bundled data rather than all the other crap i have saved in there. I think I'm missing a stage somewhere, perhaps need to mount the drive through windows but don't know how. In order to access all the songs etc on the TC via my macbook, I had to 'Enter Time Machine'. Seems like I have to do this through windows but have no clue where to start.
Is there a way for a windows vista machine to access TC hard drive data?
Will I have to perform a reset and configure the TC to the windows machine?
Will a reset erase the hard drive?
I just recently realized that my Seagate external HD is under Mac OS extended (journaled) and not Mac OS extended. I only want to use this device for storage/backup and don't want to run anything off of it. Is there any non-destructive way to change it to just extended? If not, what are some of my alternatives?
View 11 Replies View RelatedData Rescue II was recommended to me recently to retrieve erased files from an external 1TB hard drive, where the files were accidentally erased whilst initializing another (now discovered as a faulty) external hard drive. I was led to believe by the sales person that the lost data could be recovered completely with no change, but now since using the software it seems this is not the case. As recommended, I scanned the drive using the scan specifically for deleted files, proceeded with the recovery (happy to see it had recovered all of the expected files, plus more) but then discovered that none of the files had their original file name (everything is now renamed with numbers relating to the file, and the file type). I have tried calling ProSoft several times now during their opening hours, and sent several emails to enquire further about the recovery process, but never receive an answer.
It would be great if anyone here has had a similar/same problem or knows if there is a way of retrieving the lost files with original file names intact. I fear that this software has left me with no choice but to open each file and rename individually, which is sure to be an epic task for the amount of files that were on the drive!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old G5 I'm getting ready to sell so I wanted to format the hard drive. I went to disk utility, went through the process of erasing the disk, and then I did the thing that writes zeros over everything on your hard drive for just a fully clean formatting...
Moving on now to install Leopard (I tried Tiger too), when I get to "Select Destination to install Mac OS X", my hard drive won't show up at all. When I go to disk utility or startup disk, it only shows the Leopard disc that's in the computer at the moment. Doesn't show Mac HD or the volume or anything whatesoever...
I feel like at this point only something can be done from the Terminal, Everything I found people could still at least click on their HD in the disk until...

I just got my new Seagate 640gb external hard drive and am in the process of formatting it on my MBP. However, I am not sure which format to do? My main use for the hard drive is for transferring media files back and forth between my MBP and PC using just one partition on the drive. I already know I'm not supposed to pick 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' because I believe that is to use it as a boot drive. So should I pick 'Mac OS Extended' or maybe 'Free Space'?

What I would like to do is plug the external hard drive into the PC, and share it over the network so that I can access it wirelessly from my macbook. 1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.Â
2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.Â
3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.Â
4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.Â

My Seagate hard rive is saying that it is formatted NTFS when I plug it into my new mac. I have only ever used it on a mac and it didn't ever say this when i used it on my old computer.. Im not quite sure what to do because I have no where to put all my stuff to reformat it?

I accidentally formatted my external hard drive when I was creating a Windows USB install disk with Boot Camp It was a HFS+ formatted drive with a GUID partition table and 2 partitions: one clone of my Macbook OS, and one with personal data. I'm not worried about the OS clone, I'm more concerned about getting my personal data back on the second partition.So far I've used Stellar Phoenix and Data Rescue 3. I reformatted the hard drive from FAT to HFS+ before I did these scans. Not sure if it was a good idea, but the programs wouldn't scan properly otherwise.Stellar finds my files with the original folder structure, but I can't open any of the files, even though the file sizes seem to be correct. Data Rescue partially finds the original folder structure, and also has a "Reconstructed files" section which has all my files sorted by file type and without the original file name. I really want to avoid going through all my photos, videos, etc. one by one to sort them out.
Can I still recover my files in the original folder structure? Why can Stellar find all my files basically intact, but I can't open anything? In the meantime, I'm going to try scanning with Disk Drill and FileSalvage with fingers crossed...

When I sold my old desktop PC i took out the SATA hard drive (WD1600JS). My question is how can I access that drive without buying a external drive enclosure? What cables will I need? I just want to hook it up and see what's on it and completely erase the drive so I can give it away. I don't even have to see what's on it, i'm more concerned with erase the info. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro that used Lion. The computer's software crashed and wouldn't start up, so I took it to my local Apple repair store to get it fixed. They said they could pull all my files and data from my computer, since the hard drive was fine, and that they would reinstall it on my hard drive when they reset my computer. When I got my computer back and when through the initial set up and start up steps, I selected the option to retrieve data from a disk on my computer. My computer spent seven hours just searching for the disk, so I finally decided to ignore the data that's supposedly located somewhere on my computer, and just set the machine up again. Â
I set up my computer and realized that the Apple repair store reset or reinstalled Snow Leopard instead of Lion. I'm not sure how much a difference the OS makes, but now Migration Assistant can't find the other disk in my hard drive that has all my old data on it. I'm in a country that doesn't have actual Apple stores or Apple support systems in place

I used to be able to drag files over to my storage drive from Windows 7, but I'm unable to do it now, I have Boot Camp 3.1 installed and the latest update for it. If I right click in the storage drive and select New Folder it says Destination Access Denied, and has the buttons Continue / Skip / Cancel. When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.
