Windows On Mac :: Windows Sharing Formatted Drive

Jan 16, 2009

I have a PC, and a macbook. I also have an external harddrive, formatted for mac. What I would like to do is plug the external hard drive into the PC, and share it over the network so that I can access it wirelessly from my macbook. The problem is that windows does not recognise the drive, so I cannot share it. Any mac-drive-formatted reading programs only read the drive from within the program, so I still can't share it.

Windows On Mac :: Changing Permissions On External Hard Drive - Formatted For Windows

Sep 21, 2010

I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. However, it doesn't let me delete anything of the Windows drive since it is set to read only. Is there a way around this? i've tried everything i can think of, but haven't found a soluti

MacBook :: Transferring Files From Hard Drive Formatted For Windows To Mac

Jul 6, 2010

I figured it was the motherboard and that is way too costly to replace. So I just bought a Macbook and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files Off An External Hard Drive Formatted For Windows?

Feb 2, 2012

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).

However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

If I right click in the storage drive and select New Folder it says Destination Access Denied, and has the buttons Continue / Skip / Cancel. When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.

OS X :: Sharing Windows DVD Drive To Mac

Jun 17, 2009

As I'm using pbg4, I'm not able to burn dvds. Therefore, I've decided to use my windows based dvd burner, which is on a separate PC. The os is windows 7; I've shared the dvd, as well as few partitions and folders and they show and work just fine under my mac os x 10.4.11, however, my mac doesn't see the dvd. I recently installed an update concerning dvd sharing, that basically added one additional service to my share preferences, but it didn't make any difference. Any ideas how to use my win dvd? And I have another similar question: as I mentioned, I have few shared items located at the same pc windows machine; the thing is that when the powerbook comes back from sleep, everything is unmounted, and I have to manually authenticate and mount every single resource I require, which is killing.

Apr 20, 2009

I just put in a new hard drive yesterday and when i restored my time machine backup I partitioned the disk with 30 gigs for windows and the rest for my mac stuff. The whole thing restored and I have my legit copy of XP SP2 and went to run boot camp and it tells me that I can't install it because the start up disk must be formatted as a single volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for Windows. The Windows partition is completely blank.

OS X :: File Sharing USB Drive With Windows 7

Nov 1, 2010

I have a USB drive with a 5.25" HD in it hooked up to my mini running SL. On the USB drive, I have a file shared in the File Sharing section of System Preferences. The only option I have enabled is "Share files and folders using SMB." The machine trying to access the files is Windoze 7. After I enable file sharing on the mini, the PC can see it. But if I go for a long time, lets say overnight, if I try to access the files when I turn the PC on, it can not see the folder on the USB drive. But if I go to the mini, turn File Sharing off and immediately turn it on, the PC can see the shared folder. At first I thought it was maybe the harddrive being idled down, but it is not as I tested that theory. So what can I do to make sure the PC can see the shared folder all the time without me having to go into System Preferences all the time to turn it off/on for this to work?

Windows On Mac :: Install Windows 7 And Can't Get The Boot Camp Assistant To Partition My Drive?

Dec 15, 2009

I'm trying to install Windows 7 and can't get the boot camp assistant to partition my drive. The drive in question is 500GB with over 200GB free space. I want a Windows partition of 35-40GB.On first attempt I kept getting the cannot move files error when trying to partition. I read up on the error online, and most people suggested issues with parallels or needing to use idefrag. I had parallels on my machine at one point, but am not sure if there are any problem folders still hiding somewhere. Any tips on that part?I ran idefrag overnight last night. When I booted the machine up this morning, I launched it again to verify that the disk was defraged. Boot camp still doesn't want to play.

Windows On Mac :: Can I Partition My Mac Drive After Installing Windows Through Bootcamp

Nov 10, 2009

perhaps I am doing something wrong? I wanted to install Windows XP on my iMac. I previously had partitioned my Mac drives. I backed everything on these drives to my external and blew the partitions away creating my one Mac drive again.

I then ran Bootcamp, created a partition and installed XP. Everything was fine. I then partitioned my main drive and got the warning message about Bootcamp maybe not working afterwards. So I finished partitioning my Mac drive as I wanted and now I don't have the option of booting into XP through Bootcamp. When I try it just shows the Mac drive as my only boot option. I see the XP Bootcamp drive in the System Preferences startup disk area, but I assume I did something to the partition once I partitioned my Mac drives

Windows On Mac :: Booting Windows XP From External Hard Drive

Nov 18, 2009

I have an external hard drive which I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 onto. It was a long and painful process but I finally was able to get a modified XP install disc ready and from a Dell PC running Windows was able to install onto the external hard drive and I'm able to boot from it and everything. I did this on a PC because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to boot correctly from an external drive in Mac.

Anyway, the hardest part is in the past and now my only problem is how to boot this external hard drive from my macbook, which is primarily what I want to use it on. I currently have a Macbook with three operating systems on it: Mac OS 10.5.8, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP SP3. I use rEFIt to boot into these operating systems. I tried using rEFIt to boot into XP on the external hard drive but it just gives me the legacy error messages saying that it couldn't load and noting the booting legacy os is not well supported by mac.

OS X :: Sharing Windows Printer?

Jan 16, 2010

We have 2 computers over here, one uses Windows Vista, the other is an iMac with OS X Snow Leopard. They're both connected to a hub, said hub is connected to the modem. The Windows machine has 2 printers connected to it, an HP DeskJet and an Epson Stylus.

Now, I would like to access one of those 2 printers from within OS X, so I can actually print without moving files between both computers through an USB stick or whatever. I've put both printers in Windows Vista on "Shared", but I can't seem to find them anywhere in OS X. So I guess I'm doing something massively wrong.

Below is a chart of how this "network" looks like.

So, is it possible like this to get access to the printers on the Vista machine from within OS X? If so, how do I properly set it up?

Windows On Mac :: Can An External Hard Drive Be Used On Both Mac & Windows?

Jun 1, 2010

I'm trying to access my WD Passport using firewire 800 on both Windows & Mac.

The current situation is:

I have partitioned the drive through Mac Disc Utility with three partitions.
1. Time Machine
2. Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
3. MS DOS (FAT32)

I can access all partitions when running the MAC OS.
However when using boot camp to lunch Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) I cannot see the drive.

I've tried going into windows disc manager and can see the disc as an unallocated drive with no partitions.

What I want to achieve is to have the one external drive like this;
1: Time Machine (for MAC backups)
2: A partition for storing my MAC files on
3: A partition for storing windows files on (accessed while using bootcamp).

All without losing the existing backups on the drive.
