I have a 20 inch 2.66 aluminum iMac that came with a 320GB HDD. Lately the HD seems to grind for a long time when I launch any programs. The whole computer seems to just be waiting on the HD to catch up. I have 4GB of ram and it never uses all of it but I can hear the drive reading/writing while I wait for apps to load. Most notably safari, cs4, etc. but it does happen on many other programs. I thought that the issue was that it had been going on a year without a reformat, I waited until snow leopard came out and completely wiped the drive and installed 10.6 on it. However the slowness came back and I have since formatted again only to have the same problems. Has anyone else experienced these slow HD's? I have run Drive Genius on it and there is no bad blocks/SMART is verified.
System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 3
Computer: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz 2.16GHz, 2.98 GB of RAM Physical Address Extension
Leopard info: Version 10.5.8, same hardware.
I've installed XP via Boot Camp. The internal drive in the mac is 230gb (total), and I allocated 60gb to XP. I formatted the partition to NTFS (not quick), and completed the rest of the setup. I then inserted the Leopard DVD and installed the boot camp drivers. Then I downloaded all available updates for XP, and the only other thing I've installed is Mozilla Firefox. I've also made changes to the system using an optimization guide (link below), and the performance seems to be the same before and after.

The performance is very sluggish. It shows most while scrolling. It's not smooth and jitters a lot. On previous installations of XP on this computer, I've run audio software (Pro Tools/Cubase) and the performance is terrible. It can't handle even the simplest of tasks.
On the Mac OSX side of the machine, however, performance is fine. Everything runs smoothly.
As far as I know, the specs of the computer are pretty good. I can't understand why performance wouldn't be up to scratch
So, I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what's going on? Is this normal, or am I missing something? It seems like Windows isn't using the full power of the hardware.
I was watching WWDC 2003(panther intro) this morning, and I only just learned about Fast Account Switching from it. So, right after watching, I went to system preferences and enabled fast switching. However, right after I did this, my iMac made an unusually loud whir, which I assumed was the hard drive loading some files, although I have never heard it do this before. After about a minute of hearing this, I assumed that something was wrong, and I quit all applications other than system preferences, and when it didn't stop, I disabled Fast Switch. The iMac quickly quieted down. After thinking about it, I realized that I only had 1GB of RAM in the machine, which may cause the system to use virtual memory. Would having 2GB or even 4GB make this not happen, or would I need more than that? I never have noticed the iMac lagging in other areas, but would RAM help in general tasks too?
Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.
Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.
Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.
But that's not the case.
Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?

I have a MBP 13" 2.66ghz, 4GB Ram, 320GB HDD. I used bootcamp and setup the drives 150~ for each partition. I installed Windows 7 64bit for some reason when its loading I sit at the Welcome screen for a unusually long time. Several older laptops can bootup (timing past the black windows logo) almost twice as fast. One of the older laptops I am talking about is 2.0ghz core 2 duo. My Macbook air 2.2ghz loaded 2x as fast I know the SSD in the device should make it the same speed as my MBP, but why is the MBP so slow?
I have a 2009 24" imac, and in the past week sufring on the web is almost unbearable no matter what browser I'm using, theres nothing wrong with my connection as ive an iphone and an ipad and they both work fine. On certain websites it will not even load the page properly on others it takes forever (including this on). Ive unistalled flash and its still the same.
i read somewhere this could be to do with the router but I have no idea what do if it is.
I have iMac G5 1.8GHZ 2GB of ram 250GB HDD and nvidia 64mb video. I'm thinking to install leopard, but I'm afraid will it be fast? I will use: Photoshop CS2, iTunes, Skype, iChat, safari, quick time and others. Will it be fast? I mean, will software will run fast or slow?
Had been running my boot-camp Windows XP on my MBA using VMWare Fusion. A new version just got released, and I quickly upgraded.
After the upgrade, VM boot up takes for ever. Even after that, the performance is too poor. I tried uninstalling and re-installing VMWare tools, but the install doesn't complete.
I am currently in the process of making the switch from MS Office to iWork as I got sick of all the bugs that Microsoft refuses to address. Anyway, iWork is great, I only use pages, and it is more than sufficient for my work. Only problem is, it takes forever to load?! After a cold reboot, it can take up to 20secs, even after that, if I quit out of it, open another program and go back to pages, it takes around 10secs to open. Is this the same for everyone? I would have thought...

the PRAM battery clearly is failing fast. After two assurances from a large local computer seller/repairer (Best Buy) that they could indeed go to her apartment, and after acquiring the correct battery for her, I have now found out that they won't go to her apartment because the computer is more than six years old. Dead end there! Does anyone know of a place in New York City (or an individual) that would both visit her apartment and be sufficiently conversant with the innards of such an old Mac that there would be a good chance that the battery will be replaced without harming the computer? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it besides the failing PRAM battery, but Barbara is willing to pay handsomely to have her baby fixed, even if it means having the person go over it with a fine-tooth comb and charging accordingly. The computer is extremely heavy, or I'd take it in to the Best Buy store myself, and though we could get it into a taxi (with help from a doorman), there is the problem of getting it into the store and downstairs, where the repair area is. I'm strong but probably, not strong enough to do it, and we don't know anyone who could help. Any thoughts? There are multitudes of repair places and individual repairers in NYC, and many who visit people's apartments, but we clearly need someone who knows very old iMacs intimately and is not afraid to approach the problem.

So Im looking at getting a imac, but i can only get the i3 version because there is a long wait for the i5 where i live.
So would mainly use it for pretty heavy photoshop work. just wandering if anyone here uses it for stuff like that, and how it performs....
I got a white iMac G5 about a year ago. Everything has been working fine until recently when I started to notice that its REALLY SLOW. What I mean by this is that whenever I try to open an application, load my widgets or basically do anything, it is really slow and Im seeing A LOT of beach balls. Just as i started typing in the title for this tread, it gave me a beachball. This computer is not that old so it should still be running smoothly.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
btw: I have 1GB of RAM, but it still operate really slow when I only have a few application open.
A long time ago this other process, called Safari, but with the default application icon, started using up 70% of my CPU. I know they are different processes because: I can see both processes at the same time in the processes list when Safari is open, it still takes up 70-100% even when the REAL Safari is closed. Also, no matter what it open, Now there's two! You know how the root application reports crashes? Well, apparently it's reporting millions. It's using 70%-100% of my CPU too! A bunch of other root programs are taking 20%-30%, so that totals up to over 250% of my CPU!
On pressing the power button on the back of my brand new iMac i5 (Bought in store on Nov 21st), the white screen appears after 5-7 seconds and then the boot time is incredibly fast since I have an SSD installed. But I'm disturbed now with the fact that the white screen takes such a long time and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue?
I have been through 4 attempts (and returns) with the new 27" i5 Imac and returned them for multiple reasons:
1) iMac #1 had the 1tb Seagate drive, loud and grumbly 2) iMac #2 also had the loud 1tb Seagate drive, plus yellow tinge plus gray line at bottom of screen 3) iMac #3 (upgraded to 2tb drive, but yellow tinge (worse) and gray line at bottom of screen 4) iMac #4 had bad yellow tinge (most of screen) and gray line at bottom of screen
But if i come to download something on my Mac or Xbox, it is slow as fudge :P
I am downloading the update for BFBC 2 on xbox atm, and it has taken me half an hour to do 14% and it took my mate (who lives about 10 min walk away from me) about 20 mins to complete the whole thing...
Does anyone know if esata is as fast as the Internal version? If so I would be very interested in replacing my optical drive with a ssd and adding a esata for an external optical drive or another ssd. Would this work?
When i hit my desktop (after log in) it takes at least 2 minutes to become fully functional. It seems like its struggling. I hit the finder icon in my dock, or the firefox icon, and they just bounce... and bounce... and bounce.....
Then, the system sort of sorts itself out. It works fine. From then on my system is screamingly fast.
What the hell is the problem? Ive repaired disk permissions, and only have two log in items!
Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.
I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).
It seems that the xBench results for the new 21.5 iMac (base model) are about the same - and maybe a tad bit lower - than my late 2006 20" 2.16 Ghz iMac (score: 140.8) My Geekbench score is lower - c.2900 - it seems, but not by as much as I thought.
Can this be? Is my machine just as fast as the new base models? I've always found that my 2.16 was a bit pokey, sometimes take 15 secs to launch Entourage or Word and 5-10 secs to launch Safari. Opening documents takes a while as well. I was thinking of upgrading, but these speeds are not encouraging.
I live in a shared house and connect both my iMac and PC laptop to the internet via Wifi.
This is fine for the internet, but I'm constantly transferring large volumes of files between my laptop and iMac and it's unbearably slow. I can't connect to the router via ethernet because it's in the living room.
Can I connect my laptop and iMac up with an ethernet or USB cable for fast file transfer?
I'd like to buy the new iMac i7 soon, but i can wait if the next upgrade of imac it will be substantial - videocard,blueray - and not only a speed bump of the processor?
My iMac 20" G5 (PPC, working with Tiger 10.4.11), bought in April 2006, has the following illness:
When I work locally, it functions fine. When I go into Internet, it starts purring and whining.
When I watch a video on YouTube, for example, the purring and whining increases and finally the screen blacks out. With a mouse click, the screen comes back but goes out again immediately.
After shutting down the system and giving it some rest, everything starts working again normally, but only until I go online.
I have tried to use Disk Utility, but the install disk that came with my Mac gets ejected.
i've recorded a gameplay of myself playing "Combat Arms" on another windows pc i have, the videos open up fine in win7, but when i transfered them to Mac, in Premiere Pro, i got some codec error, i tried converting it, but it gives me green screens with sounds. Any ideas on how i can fix the green screen, with stripes. Also, i really want a Sony Vegas Pro 9 on my iMac, are there any other video making softwares which is almost the same as Sony Vegas?

I'd use the comp for:the regular stuff (internet, email, word docs, music) quite a bit of graphics work in programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter Bootcamp for a few graphics-intensive games (Cabal, Assassin's Creed, ...Maplestory? lol) Bootcamp for graphics programs that aren't available for the mac os
So, on the following 2 specs, please tell me which option would be good, but not redundantly powerful.
Core2Duo/ i3/ i5/ i5 Quad/ i7 Quad
ATI Radeon... 4670 with 256MB/ 4850 with 512MB/ 5670 with 512MB/ 5750 with 1GB
I'm also trying to decide on size. 21.5" is actually a fine size for me, but the maximum specs for 21"s are 3.6GHz, i5, 5670 with 512MB. If this is enough ("comfortably enough"... I don't want "just enough") for my needs, then great. Otherwise I'll have to look at the 27"s for better specs-- unless you know how to beef up the 21" while keeping it cheaper than the 27"s.
Price isn't tooo much of an issue. I can afford up to a 27", 2.93GHz, i7 Quad, 5750 with 1GB. But if my maximum uses require significantly less than that, then I don't want to pay for power that's so far beyond necessary.
"Buy the best you can afford" is tempting, but in the end I'm a little too pragmatic and stingy for that.
Any advice/pointers/stories from experience would be welcome!
My (new) iMac makes a strange noise when I boot. It looks like the hard disk to me. As long as it makes the noise, it doesn't boot. After the noise is gone (sometimes in a minute, sometimes five). I have attached a file recorded with my iPhone to illustrate what I mean. Is this normal or should I get back to Apple?
