IMac :: How To Reduce Minimum Fan Speeds
Jul 26, 2009
I have a new mid-2009 iMac 24 inch 2.66GHz. I work in a quiet environment and most of the time the computer is idling along. iStat returns the following fan speeds:
CPU 1200
HDD 1600
ODD 800
Even when I drive the iMac a bit harder - 100% CPU for an hour and a half - the temps only rise as follows:
CPU 60 C
Northbridge 68 C
Power Supply 71 C
and the fan speeds do not increase.
I value silence, and it seems to be unnecessary for the fans to running at this speed when they are not needed most of the time - when the computer is not under any load. With the iMac everything is right in front of your face. I heard about iMac Fan Control and installed it, but there is no possibility to set lower-than-standard fan speeds, except for the HD which can be set to 1200 instead of 1600. However, the ODD minimum speed increases to 1000 from 800.

I'm wondering if there is a way to reduce the minimum sound volume on osx. I have the feeling that the gap from mute (zero volume, not the "mute" key) to the first level is huge, like 0-25%, and then the 15 others increase only gradually, and I'd like to sorta "recalibrate" this...
If necessery, here are my machine's details :
MacBook Pro 15'' (Unibody)
Leopard up-to-date

Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.
Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.
Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.
But that's not the case.
Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?
Download the iStat Pro widget and report your fan speeds today!

I was having problems with overheating last night in Windows 7 in that a few apps started freezing and I noticed that the top of my iMac was scorchingly hot even when I wasn't doing anything. I downloaded MacFan and used it to up the minimum fan speeds, and it worked as I wanted it to. Upon rebooting into Mac OS X, however, I think the fan speed increase carried over and was excessive, because I can hear my fans going even when I'm not doing anything and the top of my case is barely even warm (whereas before it was somewhere between very hot and painful).
I opened up smcFanControl and it's reporting ODD/HDD/CPU speeds of 2000/2500/1500, but it also has those numbers as the listed minimums on the sliders, so I can't decrease them beyond that. I'm pretty sure I can get around that by hacking the preferences file, but that requires that I actually know what the default Apple fan speeds are. Can someone with an i7 iMac who hasn't messed with their fan speeds open up smcFanControl and tell me what the minimum speeds are?

I have the 27" inch quad core i7 imac I just got a few days ago. Some reason for certain things like d/ling the vlc players its taking a few minutes to d/l a 24 meg file. With this type of computer, it should take like 3 seconds to d/l a small file like that. I have a fast internet connection, don't understand why that's happening.

I just recently bought an imac computer and my two friends who know a lot about apple computers thought that the fans and temperature might be a little high. The cpu fan at idle runs at just under 1200 rpm's, the harddrive fan runs at 1100 rpm's and the optical drive fan runs at 1000 rpm's. The temperature itself 40-44C. The other imac that they know of is a year old, so we weren't sure if there were newer upgrades that might be making the difference between our speeds and temperature compared to that one.

My iMac seems to be a lot more noisier (a low humming noise, maybe the fans), than it was when I purchased it in a couple of months ago. When I first got it, it was the quietness and boot time which I was impressed with more than anything. Now it's noisier and boot times have doubled. I have noticed that the fans for for HD and CPU constantly spin at 1200rpm or more, with no applications open and as soon as I switch on my iMac.

First of all here's my setup: 30d/4u Charter internet coming in through my Linksys modem, from there to port 1 of my 2006 Intel Xserve running NAT and DHCP, out from port 2 of the Xserve into my AirPort Extreme running in Bridge Mode, and then out to my other devices.
My AirPort setup is as follows: Internet tab-DHCP, address set by Xserve; Wireless tab-Create a wireless network, WPA/WPA 2 Personal; Wireless Options...-5 GHz network name is not checked, Radio mode is set to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g/n (Automatic), both 2.4 and 5 GHz channels are set to Automatic; Network tab-Off (Bridge Mode).
I am transferring 100+ GB of data across the network to my Xserve, but it is only Xferring at 5.5 MB/s, or around 44 Mbps, which isn't even at wireless-g speeds. My iMac is the Mid 2010 27" BTO w/ 2.93 i7 and 8 GB of RAM. It is also wireless-n compatible. The Xserve is wired and they have had gigabit NICs since the G5s.
Things I've tried: In Wireless Options... I tried turning Radio Mode to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g and leaving 5 GHz network name unchecked, but the speeds were down in the 2 MB/s range. Again in Wireless Options... I checked the box for 5 GHz network name, and left Radio Mode in Auto, joined the 5 GHz network on my iMac, tried again, but again only 2 MB/s or less. In Wireless Options... again, I checked the 5 GHz network name box, and set Radio Mode to a/n-b/g, but ocne again, it ran at 2 MB/s or less. The AirPort Extreme is model A1354, which is obviously 802.11n compatible, and the iMac is also 802.11n compatible.

I've made two coasters today on my iMac 27" core i7.
I am using Verbatim DVD +R DL blanks and utilized Disk Utility to make one coaster (copy to a .CDR and then burned) and then used Toast 10 to write IFO files.
The DVD will "run" but looks and sounds like a satellite tv signal in bad weather - choppy all over the place. This happens on 4 players - two separate laptops, an xbox 360, and even the original iMac 27" I used to write the DVDs.
I have had no problems whatsoever writing single layer DVDs (even using old Comp USA blanks!) and playing them on aforementioned players.
Anybody have any success writing DL DVDs? If so, what brand of disc did you use? Did you reduce speed to 2x writing? Help - I don't want to create any more coasters!

I'm pretty sure this has been talked to death but I can't find the answer.
I'm looking for a bare minimum neoprene or otherwise sleeve for my 11.6 MBA.
No second pockets, no carry strap, It doesn't even need to close. I just want to slip it in and then put it in another bag that doesn't have a padded slot.

Ive got a friend that has a mac pro 2.66 quad core and it came stock with only 2gb of ram. He wants to order some today but is not sure how much to get. If getting it from OWC what would be the best bang for the buck? is there a point where more ram wont make that much difference?
oh and his has 4x512mb sticks, what are your opinions on not matching the sticks? (such as 1gb with 512mb)

With my new headphones (Sennheiser HD280-PRO) even the lowest volume is too high (even when using the extra levels using the option-key). It's just below the level where it'll be uncomfortable, but lower would still be preferred.
Does anyone know how I can get OS X to use a different scale? I have a MBP 4,1 with OS X 10.6.3.

I've got a 13" unibody MBP, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory.
From a hardware standpoint, can I run FCP and not want to tear the room apart? I have an external monitor so that's not the issue...
I know that technically I could run the software, but would it be torturous? I'll be working with HD video.
Furthermore...best place ($$) to legitimately get a copy of the software? Also, if I need to upgrade my system what would you all reccomend? Again, money is obviously the issue here and I'm just starting to get my hands dirty with this aspect of production so I'm trying to ease into things.

I'm considering getting the new MacBook Air, and using it mainly as a Windows notebook. So I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with the lower-end 64GB configuration. What's the minimum size I need to give the Mac OSX partition, just so I can boot into it occasionally for bootcamp updates and other such housekeeping tasks?

SMCFanControl lets me set a higher minimum fan speed on my MacBook Pro (I like to keep it at about 3600rpm instead of 2000rpm minimum). Is there a way to do this with the MacBook Air? SMCFanControl doesn't seem to detect the MacBook Air properly. Essentially I want it to run at around 3600rpm and increase to 6200rpm as needed. It should never be running lower than 3600rpm.

I had a problem recently which required me to stick my leopard disk in to fix permissions.
I'd like to have a usb stick available that I could use that to do this process instead so I thought of installing leopard on to the stick for this occasion, but is there a smarter way of doing this - short of dupeing (sp?) the OSX install dvd on to a stick?
So what is the minimum install size of a vanilla copy of OSX Snow leopard?

In the future, I will be looking for a Media Server, namely a Mac. I want to use it to store all my iMovie projects - mainly iSight or DV format, very little HD, stream them to my Main Mac and also to a couple of Windows PCs (not mine), and maybe preview a smaller version (640*480 or 720*480). I am thinking that Mac OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.11 will do. Especially as I use iMovie '06 and might use an older version of iTunes. I want to use an older PowerPC PowerMac to do this, can I get away with a G4 running at 400Mhz with 512 MB RAM, or do I need a faster G4/G5?

I'm in the process of setting up a new backup system at home, and I'm feeling rather annoyed right now. The setup I wanted was thus: 1TB drive connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station with three partitions: One for my desktop boot drive Time Machine backup, one for my laptop boot drive Time Machine backup, and one for a server data backup.
Now, since these backups don't need to be "deep"--it's basically catastrophic failure insurance more than "Uh oh, I deleted that last year" insurance--I figured maybe 10% more than the volume size of each would be plenty, since they're also nowhere near full.......................

Just downloaded and installed this app, been using it for a few hours, I am a fan. Just a quick question, it won't seem to let me set the minimum fan speed below 2000rpm (the standard level for the app), is this normal, I thought I remembered the apple default being lower?
15inch UNI MBP, 2.4 ghz, 2g ram, 250hd by the way

Is it possible to change the minimum amount of space we want TM to leave available on the backup disk? I assume no but couldn't see any recent answers to see if this has changed (or if there is some hidden setting change). What's the default space or percentage free TM will make sure is available?
I backup some macs directly to the TM volume (network via CCC) and want to make sure a minimum of 20GB or so remains available for those backups at any given time. The drive is 1TB and TM has filled up about 700GB of that with ongoing backups so far. TM runs hourly so pruning should happen before the need arises (the CCC backups are 2x/day). But I'd like to make sure there's a minimum available at all times.
