Can i install snow leopard straight to a firewire drive?
If so what is the best way to do this? i don't want to just clone the internal drive to the firewire drive, i want a clean install to play with.
I have a 1Ghz PowerPC G4 iMac and want to delete everything and start again with Leopard. (it seems to be within the system reqs.) Problem is the DVD drive isn't functioning properly. It sees the OSX DVD but won't boot from it. Question - What's the best alternative method? Create a boot firewire disk?

I have booted up using the install DVD that i bought a couple years ago to upgrade from Tiger. However each time i install i get an error saying that it cannot be installed. It allows me to start the install and is almost complete before i get this error. I have it partitioned using the Apple Partition Map so i can boot up on a PowerPC computer.
What should i do to install 10.5 on an external drive?
I have 2 external FW 400 drives on my late 2011 iMac. I use an 800 to 400 adapter. I've been thinking of getting a new external drive from OWC. The have both 400 and 800. The 800 case has 2 800 connectors and one 400. Does it make sense to mix? Will they all run at the slowest in the chain?
I was thinking of connecting the 800 directly to the iMac using the built-in 800 connection. Then chaining from there using the 400 connection to the other existing 400 external drives. Will I actually get 800 speed on the first drive?

I have Snow Leopard installed on an 8GB Flash Drive. It works all good and fine. The only thing is I don't want to do an upgrade, I want to do a FRESH erase and install of my machine (macbook). I tried plugging in the USB drive and restarting the computer while holding down "c", this proved to not work.
Any way that I can erase the computer completely and fresh install from my USB drive?
I have accidentally wiped the hard drive of a mid 2011 imac 27" there was no install DVD provided for this machine and a retail Snow Leopard disk will not boot, apparently I need 10.6.8 and the retail disk is only 10.6.3 is there any solution to this dilemma?

I had this problem before. Erased the hard drive and then reinstalled everything. I made it through it but I think I may have done it wrong. Anyways the computer worked good till the other day. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it is doing it again.
Do I need to start with the install disk 1 that came with the computer and install disk 2, then install snow leopard? Or can is there a faster route of doing this?
I just got my brand new 2.66ghz iMac in the mail. Wondering whether it is worth installing snow leopard before I painfully switch everything from my old computer to this one. I don't want to have to redo my entire system later.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedEven though my MacBook has a built-in iSight, I still use my old external FireWire iSight since I run my MacBook in clamshell mode, and my external monitor doesn't have a built-in webcam. All in all, I love it - it works well, looks good, and I use a nifty gooseneck stand with it that can be repositioned just about anywhere. It was perfect for my needs, and I was never interested in changing webcams. However, after upgrading to 10.6, my external iSight no longer works. I have no idea how to fix this. I know they're old, but has anyone heard whether or not Apple was making them obsolete?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Snow Leopard installed on a partition on a Firewire HD, back when my MacBook Pro was also running SN. Since then I have upgraded to Lion. I recently tried to boot from the SN partition on the FW HD, only to get the 3 beep error (which I discovered later means the Mac can't boot from an earlier version than the current OS it's running...)
So, I would now like to upgrade the Firewire HD version of OSX from Snow Leopard to Lion [keeping the user folder in place, with docs, apps etc], but the installer says it can't be done. Do I have to erase the partition and do a clean install? It's pretty annoying if I do!

The projector menu indicates that the USB port in the connected MacBook is in the "off" position. I connected the same projector to an older MacBook (Snow Leopard) and it works instantly. Is there a toggle switch in the newer MacBook that I need to activate, or mid-2011 macbook running on OS X Lion no longer support USB connection to a projector? I've downloaded the latest driver from Epson and during install process - there's already a newer version of the driver installed.

I have a Macbook Pro with an inoperative slot-loading Superdrive. I purchased Snow Leopard today, planning to use my Mac Pro w/working Superdrive in Firewire Target Disk Mode to install the OS on my Macbook Pro. I can mount the Snow Leopard install via TDM, but the installer informs me that I cannot install Snow Leopard from "this volume" (presumably because the Target Disk Mode connection isn't recognized as an optical drive?). I've also tried to use "Remote Install OS X," but because my MBP is not an Air, it doesn't have the necessary firmware to select a network boot on startup by holding Option. Am I out of luck until I get access to a firewire external DVD drive?

The firewire drive does not appear as a bootable option on any of the computers, attached to either of the iMacs via the Firewire 400 port (through a 400 to 800 adaptor), or attached via the Firewire 800 port on the MBP. This is the profile of the LaCie via System Profiler on the iMac?

G4 IMac, 10.4. I have a simpletech 1 tbite hard drive that does not mount almost always on my machine. I just brought it home from a friends where it does show up instantly. Ran disc utility for permissions on my imac, swapped cords. Power on before boot up, power on after, unplug firewire, etc., nothing works. I want to install OS X 10.4 on the drive to try & boot up my powerbook (panic kernel message there).

The computer is usable, however internet is very slow... I have other devides, windows machine, ipad, iphone and they all run okay.
It seems that because I have booted via the external disk..... internet is slow. Could this be as the OS is needed to refer to the external disk?

I have a tower Mac Pro with Snow Leopard running on it.Unfortunately one of the software that I use doesn't have yet a Snow Leopard update. So I am thinking maybe I can install older version of Leopard on one of the internal drives (i have 3 additional internal drives), so I can boot my computer from either Leopard or Snow Leopard, depending on needs (i don't want to get rid of Snow Leopard).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HITACHI touro desk 3TB external hard dive connected to my iMac OS X version 10.6.8 Every time i start up the system it stays on a grey screen until I unplug the usb of the external hard drive then the system boots up normally. I have tried connecting different usb cables, plug in to different usb ports, and nothing works. I have other external hard drives and they don't give me any problems. is a pain plugging and unplugging the usb cable.

I have to get a external drive for backup with Time Machine. Everyone says to get Firewire I guess because its faster...but.Do you need to use the power cord for those? I know some USB drives you can only use the USB cable and it powers it which is handy because I move the drive a lot and I hate connecting two cables....do firewire drives need both cables?
