IMac :: How To Change The Resoulotion Of An External Display
Sep 19, 2009
I have a g3 slot loading Imac, which I am reusing as a computer for a family member who is visually impaired. I have bought a 22" monitor that can display a resolution of 1680x1050. but I can not display more than 1024x768. that I can't get it just to display on the external monitor, it uses both monitors with identical pictures.
I have a g3 slot loading Imac, which I am reusing as a computer for a family member who is visually impaired. I have bought a 22" monitor that can display a resolution of 1680x1050. but I can not display more than 1024x768. Another problem is that I can't get it just to display on the external monitor, it uses both monitors with identical pictures.
I just purchased a 23" monitor to replace my iMacs 17" display (since it has a nasty crack in one of the corners). I hooked it up fine and all, but the displays are linked, allowing me to hover the mouse to the iMac's display which I find annoying most of the time.
Is there a way to make the iMac display zone out and just use the external by itself?
I'm trying to write an AppleScript to change the resolution of my external display from 1920x1080 to 800x600 and back to 1920x1080 (it has a few issues and this fixes them, but I'm tired of going into System Preferences to do this all the time). I can get the script to open up System Preferences and option-click the scaled button (so all of the different resolutions come up), but I can't get it to select anything inside of the box where all of the different resolutions are (I can't find what I'm supposed to refer to it as anywhere and if I find something it doesn't work). Here's the code I have right now:
tell application "System Preferences"
reveal anchor "displaysDisplayTab" of pane "com.apple.preference.displays"
end tellÂ
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences" to tell window "LCDTV16"

I have a 15" Mid 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retna) running OS 10.9.3.Â
I'm interested in the new iMac but could not work with a glossy display. Can anyone share their experiences of using the iMac with an external display? In one respect it seems like a waste to have two monitors but the base model costs little more than the maxed out Mini and seems like the better option.
I would be interested in seeing photos of any setups featuring the iMac and an external display.
Also, is there a way to turn off the iMac display when using an external display?
I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

I have the mini display port plugged in and a vga cable from the imac to my external monitor. I should just be able to turn the monitor on and it work but the imac doesn't detect it and it just comes up as a black screen.
In the near future I will be purchasing a 24" iMac and I wanted to now if I could display TV programs or video game consoles on it using S-video (or another type of cable)like a normal Television screen.
I want to know because I also plan on purchasing a PS3 and want to display it on the iMac's beautiful 1080p screen!
Please tell me if there is any way so I can purchase the needed accessories in advance.
Hi this is my first time doing this, but I want to connect my iMac to my LCD TV via HDMI, but my computer only has a mini dvi port on the back. What cables do I need and is my iMac capable of outputting to 1080p?
I have the baseline late 2006 iMac (5,1) with ati x1600 card and my current display resolution is 1440x900.
Will I have to have both monitors on or can I just have the LCD TV be on and the iMac built in monitor be off?
My wife has an iMac (I don't know any other way to identify it e.g. model number), and she has this 3rd party calibration software that I'm trying to use. I am not used to a Mac, and I cannot find the display settings for the monitor. There are no buttons on the monitor, and when I go to preferences, I can only find the brightness control. I've googled this and cannot find a clear, simple answer. I have used every version of Windows (currently on 8.1 on my PC) and it's easy for me on that platform. I suppose it's just that I don't really know how to navigate Mac OS.
I've found that my 24" display just isn't big enough for the currents applications I'm using. Could I use the following to attach either a bigger monitor or my projector to the iMac?
APPLE has posted a knowledge base article recently, saying that the 27 inches iMac could be used as an external display for other devices, using a third party converter to convert the signal to DisplayPort compliant signals.

At least we have some official words that it does work and can expect those converter to be available soon
I posted yesterday about my 1.83 17 inch first generation intel iMacs screen dying. If we get an external display, is there a way to make that the main screen?
Today I bought iMac 27-inch. Firstly I planned to buy 21.5 inch, but when I saw this 27-inch I decided to buy it. I've got Core 2 Duo version.
So, I wanna to connect my 360 to this iMac. I have Mini Display -> DVI adapter and than DVI -> HDMI adapter and the problem could be sound. DVI does not transmit any sound. So is there option to play sound from 360 on my iMac or via headphones? What if I connect stereo cables (into mini jack using adapter).
I have a MacBook Pro. I see that the new iMacs have a mini displayport input so that the 27" screen can be used with my MacBook Pro. I'm wondering how this works? Since there is obviously no button to push, how exactly do you switch between the iMac and the MacBook Pro displaying on-screen?
Is it possible to somehow capture a screen from iMac 27-inch and while it is used as external display (display for Xbox 360 - I have Kanex XD HDMI converter)?
We have an iMac G5 running 10.4.11 which developed some nasty colour banding down the screen and have now plugged in an external display. How can you turn off the iMac display so it only outputs through the external monitor?
I have a 27" imac and have been using an apple led cinema display with it. I have had no problems with the display until today. Yesterday I installed windows 7 via bootcamp and had some trouble with the second display being detected but after downloading all of the bootcamp updates it worked fine. Today I restart my computer back into OSX and the display does not work. I tried resetting the PRam or whatever but that didnt do anything. When I go to system preferences > display there is no longer an option to detect display and there are no longer options to change the screen resolution.
I spoke with an apple tech who has me installing an update but I dont think she really knew what was going on and I doubt this will work. When I reboot back into the windows partition the display works during start up and I see the windows logo. So I dont think its a hardware issue (also the display still works fine with my macbook pro). But as soon as startup finishes I get a black screen. Under the control panel windows still recognizes that there is a 2nd display attached and you can still drag items over to the other screen, I just cant see anything. All black.
I was told that the new 5k imac can support one external 4k display via thunderbolt, but the 5k imac cannot itself be rotated into portrait mode (on a vesa mount for example). If I connect an external 4k display via thunderbolt to the new 5k imac, can the external display be rotated into portrait mode so I can have 3840 pixels vertically on the 4k display?

I have a samsung display and I can see the cursor, but nothing i drag and drop over there is showing up. if I drag a tab over, I can see the cursor but not the page, just blackness
I just got a new MacBook Pro for graduation. I've decided to use my iMac as an external display and use my Macbook Pro as my main computer. My iMac has about 1TB of space while my MacBook has about 500 GB. Since I'll be using my iMac primarily as a external display I was thinking about also using it as an external harddrive so I can backup my data from my Macbook via Time Machine. Is this ok to do? Does anyone advised that I don't? I just want to make sure I don't screw up anything before doing so. BTW I also have a WD external harddrive connected to my iMac.
