MacBook :: Make Secondary Display Primary Display When Primary Display Nonfunctional?
Feb 8, 2012My wife's macbook monitor is destroyed due to happy 2 year old. It won't be worthwhile to replace the monitor and it is not fixable without some expensive work being done on it, therefore I would like to use our TV as an external monitor and retire the macbook to being a mediia computer. I have connected it to the TV, and I see an empty desktop, as far as I can determine it looks like it is treating the TV as a secondary display - that the desktop is extended onto - so I cannot actually interact with the normal desktop. When I try to run things using keyboard shortcuts I hear some sounds of things starting, but I don't see anything on the TV.  So what I need to do is to have some way to tell it to treat the secondary display as the primary display. IMac :: Using HDTV As Primary Screen?
Jan 22, 2009I'm thinking about buying a mac mini to use with an HDTV as the primary screen. I've read some other posts regarding this. My question is, which method of hooking the setup up (i.e., which cables) provides the best picture. I've done this with a PC before but the connection was crumby... is this the case with the mac mini? Will I be able to get the same resolution that I can in a monitor? Also, I have looked at a ton of HDTVs and find the picture to be pretty bad compared to older TVs. Can anyone reccommend a model in the $500-700 range that has a good picture.

Aug 6, 2010I have a 27" imac and have been using an apple led cinema display with it. I have had no problems with the display until today. Yesterday I installed windows 7 via bootcamp and had some trouble with the second display being detected but after downloading all of the bootcamp updates it worked fine. Today I restart my computer back into OSX and the display does not work. I tried resetting the PRam or whatever but that didnt do anything. When I go to system preferences > display there is no longer an option to detect display and there are no longer options to change the screen resolution.
I spoke with an apple tech who has me installing an update but I dont think she really knew what was going on and I doubt this will work. When I reboot back into the windows partition the display works during start up and I see the windows logo. So I dont think its a hardware issue (also the display still works fine with my macbook pro). But as soon as startup finishes I get a black screen. Under the control panel windows still recognizes that there is a 2nd display attached and you can still drag items over to the other screen, I just cant see anything. All black.
IMac :: Unable To Use TV As Secondary Monitor / Switch Between Primary And Secondary Display?
Feb 2, 2009we are trying to hook up our TV as a secondary monitor (for hulu, netflix, etc) but it defaults as the primary monitor. We would like to keep the imac as the primary monitor, and have the TV as a secondary, but cannot figure out how to do it! The only way we can get the imac back to primary status is if we use mirror mode. Once we take it off mirror mode, the TV becomes the primary monitor again, and there appears to be no way of switching it in OSX display preferences.
I've done similar hookups with my laptop, and the TV defaults as the secondary monitor. Why isn't this happening with our iMac? Any ideas?

Feb 22, 2009I've got a 2.4 GHz unibody MacBook running boot camp, and I'd like to have my new 24" LED Cinema Display set as the primary display so that, when I play games, the system recognizes that the resolution can, indeed, go higher than 1280x800.
However, when I right click and hit Properties to see desktop settings and stuff, right clicking on the Cinema Display shows that "Primary" is grayed out; it seems that I can not set it as the primary display.
Does anybody have a solution to this? I'd rather not use the nVIDIA settings to turn off the MB display and only use the LED display, as I'd like to be able to have AIM and a web browser open on the MB screen while I game on the LED display. I suppose if this is not possible under Dual View atm, I'll make do, but I figured I'd check first.

IMac :: How To Keep Display Sleeping While Keeping External Display Active?

I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.
I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.
I've tried two different ways but both have failed.
1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.
2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.

Aug 30, 2010I use my Macbook + Boxee to watch videos via a projector as my secondary display, but when I'm watching videos the bright macbook screen can be distracting next to my projected display. I'd naturally 'sleep' my display (I even have that function set as one of my 'hot corners') but if I do this then the secondary display, i.e. the projector, also loses picture. I'm therefore left with the options of dimming the brightness of the macbook's screen right down to its lowest setting (which seems to be 'off') or shutting the macbook lid, which naturally causes the whole system to sleep unless I use one of those reportedly dodgy kernel-hacking apps like InsomniaX.

Jan 13, 2010I just purchased a 23" monitor to replace my iMacs 17" display (since it has a nasty crack in one of the corners). I hooked it up fine and all, but the displays are linked, allowing me to hover the mouse to the iMac's display which I find annoying most of the time.

Nov 10, 2009I'm interested in the new iMac but could not work with a glossy display. Can anyone share their experiences of using the iMac with an external display? In one respect it seems like a waste to have two monitors but the base model costs little more than the maxed out Mini and seems like the better option.
I would be interested in seeing photos of any setups featuring the iMac and an external display.
Also, is there a way to turn off the iMac display when using an external display?
OS X :: Instant (One Click) Primary Display Switch
Nov 27, 2010The thing is pretty straight-forward. I would like an "one-click" solution for switching a primary display. (from my iMac to my TV). Only way I know is to go to the settings and drag the status bar to a secondary display to make it primary. I thought I could record that action via Automator, but there are many windows and stuff, so it depends on momentary state of iMac (RAM, processor, etc..) way too much. For ex. it takes different amount of time to open the settings window, so the probability of Automator clicking into blank is pretty high at times. I think this could be somehow solved with a script, but because I'm not really good with Terminal and similar stuff (besides basic commands) and I don't know for which file I should look, so I can't do it on my own.

Mar 9, 2012So my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.Â
It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.Â
