I have a 2.4 Intel MacBook that I purchased in April. I want to upgrade the memory to 4gb and swap out the hard drive for a bigger one. I've searched this forum and found conflicting replies. One said that replacing either RAM or my HD will void my warranty, another said that HD is user-replaceable and RAM is not, while another said both are fine. Any idea on what is accurate? How much would it cost to just take it to the Apple Store and have a genius replace the HD and RAM? I can do it myself, but I don't wish to void my warranty.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook pro6,2 and I want to take out my CD drive and replace it with a SSD. Will this make void my warranty? And is there a way to do it without voiding? ie. bring it to apple and get them to do it? Ideally I'd like to remove my CD drive, put my hard-drive in it's place and then put the SSD where the hard-drive was

I work at a University with a very "by the book" IT director. He is under the assumption that installing third-party parts (e.g. RAM, hard drives, etc) in an Apple product (such as a Mac Pro or MacBook) "voids the warranty" because this apparently is the case with some PC brands. I know this is not the case and that Apple characterizes RAM as a user-upgradable part -- as long as you don't break anything while installing it, it does NOT void your warranty (case in point: Apple even gives detailed instructions on how to upgrade).
However, being the stickler that he is, my IT director will not take my word for it -- he needs proof from Apple that it's okay for us to upgrade these machines ourselves. Can anyone provide a link on an Apple (or similarly reputable) site clearly stating that this is the case? Does such documentation exist?

I want to upgrade my aluminum macbook's 5400 RPM hard drive to a 7200 RPM hard drive.
My question is: Will upgrading the hard drive void the warranty on the new macbook?
I have the 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook with about 2 years of Applecare left. Would it void the warranty if I replaced the hard drive? If not, would any hard drive issues I might have in the future be covered under Applecare?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOK, I know, its a stupid question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer. But if I were to take the bottom off to clean out dust would I lose the year of Applecare I have left?
Recently my fans rev up to 4500rpm when doing simple browsing. They never used to so I'm thinking that almost 2 years of use has caused a buildup of dust... I really don't like unnecessary fan noise...
I have a refurbished macBook Pro and everything was working fine (it's about 9 months old). So everything was fine till suddenly the right fan started making these horrible noises. Kinda like a motor boat along with with ticking clanking sounds. It comes and goes: also Istat shows that the max RPM is 3000 or so.
Thinking something was stuck in the fan I figured i'd take the back cover off to take a look, and now I have stripped one of the outer screws holding the back cover. Now i'm worried my warranty is void, even though the fan issue was not my fault but the stripped screw is.
I plan on going to the apple store soon to see what they say but I was curious as to what you guys think first. Will the apple store fix the screw and then replace that fan?
I will be getting a MacBook pro soon and I wanted to know if the data doubler would void waarranty. Also will will switching my hdd that comes with it with a 1tb I already own would it void warranty?

I'm putting in the NVidia GeForce GTX 285 1GB, some internal HDD's, a SuperDrive, 8GB apple-spec RAM, etc.. etc...I'm wondering if for any reason something goes wrong with my machine, and I need a replacement, or for whatever reason I need to contact apple about help for my machine.. if they can turn around and say "You modified your Mac Pro" it's no longer under warranty? I think they're designed for US to do this stuff?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust got one of the new 13 mac book pros and the apple salesperson told me if I do a ram or hard drive upgrade myself it would void the warranty? Is this true? I mean they show us how to do it here on the apple site. Looking to go to 8 gig of ram and maybe ssd drive but for sure 7200 rpm drive....

Have a quick question. I'm considering buying an Imac from a reputable Apple imac reseller on Ebay that manually upgrade the hd's to either 2tb or an ssd drive on the imac 27. Will apple not honor the warranty and void it if they see the hd were not upgraded by them should the warranty ever have to be used?
Also, if the imac ever needs to be replaced by apple, do I .lose the hd for a stock imac model with only ,1tb hd? Hope that makes sense.
I just bought a uni MB...I put in 500GB internal HD. Does this void my warranty?
Also, I bought 2 of these....the one w/ the HD replaced,...when I put a cd/dvd in the drive it vibrates the whole laptop.
The other MB is fine....I never put a disc in the one I change prior to changing HD, but I know I didn't do anything wrong, I followed instructions came with the new MB!

View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout two months ago the WiFi network I had set up was hacked by 14 people. I spent about an hour cleaning out the router, changing passwords, SSID's and encrypting the network moreso than it was prior. After that I downloaded a free trial of 'Virus Barrier' as I have zero trust of McAfee (the only other option I could find). After the trial ran out I deleted the icons as I'm not very familiar with Mac's and could not figure out if that would completely remove the software or not (I don't believe it did).I use GoogleChrome as our browser, while running Netflix or just turning it on (doing anything really) we get asked to approve for 'KsFetch' or 'Kfetch' to open a port. I did a little reading on this and did/have not found anything saying it is/was a threat, so I allow(ed) it. Due to the fact that our browser runs increasingly slow regardless of the fact that I consistantly delete cookies and history, I'm interested in having a technician who's more familiar with Mac's than myself; run diagnostics on the computer and basically just run a little 'check-up' and make sure it's okay.I think the slowness of the internet and the unresponsive browser may be due in part to our router which I don't believe is fully equipt to handle the amount of bandwidth that we use. But just to be on the safe side considering this was a very expensive computer, I want it looked into.So my question is (after all of that mess), if we get a warranty, would it cover general diagnostics? And Which warranty would be best (assuming there are variable kinds)?
If anybody with vast knowledge of Mac's and their upkeep reads this, would you happen to know if there may be something wrong with the computer?Earlier this morning it smelled a bit like burning plastic, it is generally used all day than off all night, after about ten minutes the smell went away (this was before I turned it on.).

I've been using a Logitech G7 mouse w/ USB Overdrive (and now Steermouse). I have an issue with the mouse double-clicking when it's supposed to single-click. It does it randomly throughout the day.
I tried testing my original Apple Bluetooth Cordless Mouse (not the MM), it works fine. No accidental double clicking. The G7, in Windows, does not suffer from this problem. I know the G7 isn't "supposed" to work with OSX, which is probably the reason why it's doing this in the first place, but I have seen other readers install USB Overdrive and Steermouse without issues.
Is there a way to go to default OSX Mouse drivers? Maybe all these installs of 3rd party apps screwed something up. I don't know, just a guess. If anyone has any info on how I could go about fixing this issue, let me know.
Is it possible to configure USB Overdrive to access Dashboard and Expose using the middle mouse button and one of the thumb buttons?
The control panel has options for what actions to take when these buttons are pressed, but Dashboard/Expose are not among the choices. Trying to assign a keystroke to the buttons doesn't work either because when I try, the keys activate Dashboard or Expose rather than capturing the key in USB Overdrive's keystroke window.
I've just upgraded and rebooted and now my fan is going crazy while all I've got running is Safari. Has anyone else noticed this?
Edit: ah there we go. I reset the SMB and that's brought the temperature down to 53c. 70c when idling had me worried for a while there.
So here's what happened: I had a MX518 that I got for my iMac, and then I found out that it had no drivers for OSX, so I ended up taking it back, and exchanging it for MX400. MX4000 has OSX drivers, but the wheel is awful. Each time I press the scroll wheel (which feels like it needs a bodybuilder to be able to press it), the thing tilts either left or right, causing it to not only activate the middle button, but also a left/right wheel button. This is very annoying.
I'm wondering if anyone here is using software such as USB Overdrive like the one found here (URL) I mainly want to run it on MX518, and was wondering if the dpi switch buttons still work with it after it's installed on the system.
I'm a lifelong Mac user, but I use a PC at work and that means using Excel and Word a lot. Whenever I work from home on my Mac I always have a slight bit more difficulty in selecting the cells I want in Excel and I do attribute this in the slight differences between how the Mac mouse and PC mouse work.
I've used USB Overdrive for as long as I can remember but I only started thinking about what settings would give me the same mouse movement as a PC on my Mac. I am mainly interested in what Speed and Acceleration setting you have to best mimic a PC. I currently am using 400 dpi and 150% accel.
I've just started using USB Overdrive and Its great how you can remap every mouse button, but cursor movement still feels sluggish and mac-like.
Can someone please post (screenshot of) their settings for speed and acceleration that is required to achieve windows-like movement?
I've recently been running into problems with mouse clicks not being picked up by OS X. At first I thought it was my mouse, but it seems to happen with other USB mice as well. Turns out the problem is being caused by USB Overdrive. Seems there is a problem with it and 10.6.x. Turns out that I am not the only one with the problem and no one has heard from the developer of a workaround or patch to fix the problem.
I use a Logitech MX518 and Logitech won't release Mac drivers for it, so I need something like USB Overdrive to get full functionality. Does anyone here know of any alternatives to USB Overdrive that work with Snow Leapord?
today I've received my new iMac. It's a fantastic machine.I'd like to use the overdrive feature in the Catalyst Control Center but it's not available (not even displayed). Does anyone know of a workaround to enable that feature? I'd like to overclock the graphics card a bit.
I use the Overdrive app to borrow books from Maryland library systems. How do I put the Overdrive icon on my dock at the bottom of my home screen?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently been having problems with left and middle clicks not being picked up by OS X. For example, I click a link, but its not selected at all. Another is I middle-click a tab in FF to close it, and nothing happens. I usually have to click twice in succession or hold the button down for a second or teo for the click to register. The weirder part is that it doesn't always happen. The right button and back/forward buttons on my mouse don't seem to be affected. I've tried to clean my mouse (Logitech MX518) but that doesn't fix the problem. The only thing I can think that is causing the problem is mouse drive I am using (USB Overdrive). I have to use it as Logitech hasn't and won't release drivers for the MX518 for the Mac. A bit of research shows that a few people have had similar issues. Has anyone here run into this problem before? Know of a solution? If not, do you guys know of any alternatives to USB Overdrive that I can use that works with 10.6.x?
