Mac Pro :: 1st Generation - Update Video Card
Jan 26, 2010I just purchased my first Mac... a used Mac Pro...2 x2.66 dual core with 8 gb of ram and a 7300GT video card. (built Aug 2007) I want to upgrade the video card. I have tried to follow earlier postings, but need a bit more clarification... It appears that the 8800GT mac version is the only recommended card, but Apple no longer sells them. I can still find these 1st gen cards on eBay for approx $250-280. I have also read where others of you have installed new cards, such as the 4870, in your 1st gen mac, but using these newer cards seems to require some "flashing" of the card or other such tweaks--which, unfortunately, I am not that familiar with. With the 8800GT, it seems you can just swap out the cards, update the drivers and you are good to go... am I wrong in thinking that the newer cards are more difficult to get up and running?

May 14, 2009I have an 8 Core Mac Pro with the NVIDIA GeoForce 7300GT video card and I was wondering if I should update the driver? I am running Vista Business 64bit through bootcamp. When you go to nvidia site there is no driver update for mac os but there is for vista 64bit. But I am afraid that if I update the driver for vista it might mess it up when I am in Leoapard?

I know that Apple has the update software feature, but I never seem to see any video card drivers for the 9400/9600 chip. Can I update this manually from the Nvidia site? Or trust that Apple will update drivers when they feel the need. BTW, I'm not having video issues on the OS X, but just wondering.

I just got the second card I'm trying today: ATI X800 XT AGP, and my computer will just sit at the grey apple screen with no wheel spinning. I'm assuming this is a driver issue (or something much worse)! Since my computer will not boot, I have no idea how to update the drivers for this card.

Mar 8, 2009I just updated boot camp and when restarting teh entire windows went 8 bit. In the monitor conrol panel the computer recognizes I have an nvidia 8600N video card but when changing the resolution it won't take it. I press apply and nothing, it goes back to 640 x 480 and 256 colors.
I started the computer switching to the previous working system and I get the same result.

Jun 12, 2009My 3 yr old IMac G5 (no isight) seems to be real sluggish in graphics dept. I never used to have problems watching hulu videos, now they stutter. When I play warcraft, the game struggles to keep up if I'm in an area where there is lots of players. Would a new graphics card help? Is it replaceable on my IMac model?

But I understand Snow Leopard has support for GPU acceleration. For graphic design work, are the GT130 or ATI 4850 worth the upgrade price over the GT120?

Sep 4, 2009Ok so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

Mar 7, 2009I just received my refurb 2.8Ghz 24" iMac today. I have been setting it up and transferring files to it for the last few hours. I just installed 4GB of RAM from Crucial to upgrade from my 2GB that came preinstalled. I opened Hulu and started watching a video full screen while I was working on something in the same room. All of a sudden the playing video froze and there was a loud high pitched squeal coming from the speakers and some crackling, followed by another high pitched squeal from the speakers and then the computer froze.
I know it wasn't a fan noise or a hard drive noise, it was definitely a high pitched audio tone and crackling from the speakers when it hung up. The only way I could make it stop is to hold down the power button and turn it the iMac off. I wonder if it could have been my photo collage screensaver kicking in while the hulu video was playing fullscreen that caused something to lock up? It seems like it was in the timeframe from when I walked away from the computer to the time it crashed.

Jun 25, 2014how I could connect my mini dv camcorder to my mac and transfer the video to the computer. My camcorder only came with cord for playback on TV and the power cord, but nothing for the computer, especially a Mac. The manual refers to a Dv cable (hURL....) and says "When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC VC-VDV206U or VC-VDV204U DV cable depending on the type of DV connector (4 or 6 pins) on the PC". Currently running Mavericks with Thunderbolt and a FireWire 800 port.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

ATI Radeon HD 4870
It looks like in many cases there's two versions, and the mac version costs about 10x as much on ebay and in stores. Is that accurate, or is one of these models mac and pc compatable, and therefore the laws of supply and demand work in my favour?
(fyi: I just want the cheapest one, I don't do heavy GPU work)

Dec 4, 2010I've had a pleasant experience with my imac so far, and it read my SD card fine at first. For some reason I put my SD in the SD card reader and copied the pictures from it. I take it out and put it back in my camera. "The SD card cannot be formatted. It may be defective." Really? I put it back in my iMac. It doesn't mount. I check Finder and Disk Utility. Ya, it's nowhere. I put my other SD card in my iMac. Same issue. Now my camera won't read that one either. I put them in my sister's $300 netbook running Windows 7 Starter. Funny! It reads them! However, my camera still doesn't and my imac still doesn't. I try formatting them. No go. I've tried every format I can. They are just dead. Useless. My sister's computer can read them, and even format them, but something in that stupid iMac made my SD cards defective. I can buy new ones, but should I have to? I can't even see if they'll work through the camera while connected via USB because the camera won't even read them. I bought a Mac to avoid ridiculous problems like this. Was I wrong? Is it just a ticking time bomb like every other computer on the market? Should I immediately go buy a backup drive? If it's doing crazy stuff like this out of the blue, how can I trust it not to randomly crash? I think I overestimated Apple's competence. This should never happen. It actually made my SD cards defective.
