IMac :: Faster Video Card/higher Power Drain?
Mar 23, 2009
Just wondering, if I were to go for a higher specd Imac with a more powerful video card (thinking possibly the refurb with the 8800), would this be a significantly bigger energy drain, or does the card not kick in to full force unless a task requires it to do so?

Is that setting effecting the processor as well? or anything else?it'd be great if when put on the "better battery life" it would down clock a bit to squeeze more battery life.

I'm a happy owner of a MBP 2010, 15" i5, 2.4GHz.
Before some days I noticed that Snow Leopard installed its update 10.6.4.
Well no big problem but I have a sense that the time remaining without using AC adapter has slightly fell. Before, using only firefox for example I could see about 6 hours remaining (some minutes after powering on my mac). Now it hardly shows about 4+.
Has any other noticed that?

My father owns one of the original G5s, so its power pc not intel. Today while browsing an excel spreadsheet he says part of the screen turned black, then the monitor shut off, then the monitor came back on but not video. Mean while the fans started spinning out of control. Now when he tries to turn it on, he gets power, but all that happens is the fans spinning faster and faster and faster until he turns it off. No video or anything. Just speeding fans. He fears the CPUs died since they control the fans. Any suggestions? He also says the fans were spinning unusually fast these last few days.

,A friend just recently purchased a NVIDIA Video Card and went to install it in his new Mac Pro but could not find a source to hook up additional power to the card. He called Apple and they weren't able to tell him how to connect to the Mac power supply.
Does the motherboard provide the necessary power so that he doesn't need to hook up the extra power cable to the card or does he need a booster cable etc?

so apparently my G5 needs a video card. I was not booting and wouldn't shut down. I reinstalled tiger but no difference. it will boot in safemode but I get lines across the display. they are in "groups of three" small squiggly lines. Â
Apple store says they think its video card but they will not support it because its "vintage"... I guess "computer years" are similar to dog years the card it came with is GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256mb ram. OWC has a Radeon 5770 with 1G of ram for 270.00 but this card is not compatible with my machine. it says it needs 10.6 or later... but I cannot upgrade the OS cuz leopard requires Intel processor.Â
so my question is, if a 1G card is 270.00... one that is compatible with my machine should be less I would think? also, even If I could find a compatible 1G card, I think it would be like having a Ferrari and only using 1st gear you know? cuz I would be bottle necked at the processors.. I would think? so what is compatible with the G5 but more ram than the current 256mb?Â

I have a g5 which will not connect to my monitor as my monitor is adc and the g5 has 2 dvi connections its a 1.8ghz single processor g5 with 2gb memory. My friend has a dual processor mac with a dead hard drive and he says I can swap the video card as his has one dvi and one adc connection. He says its a nvidia card but he's not sure what one (came new on the g5 dual). Will this card work in my g5? Will save me getting an adaptor (expensive) or a new monitor.

I keep seeing different anecdotes about people having lagging issues with the Intel HD graphics card. Is it really that bad? It would be a real pain to have to keep it on the nVidia card all the time, even when unplugged. I'm afraid that it will really drain the battery a lot faster than having the Intel on. Anyone have any estimates of this? It's one of the more worrying things about the Pro.

I'm not a gamer at all, but I will be attaching a second 1920x1080 monitor to a new iMac. Does it matter for general purposes if I have 512 vs 1Gb of RAM in the video card? Will, I dunno, Expose suck on two HD monitors if I only have 512?
I do some infrequent video editing, and I have one specialized program (not video-related) that supposedly gets a boost out of extra video RAM (though no one has provided benchmarks on different setups.)

Why does Minecraft look like this on my iMac? Is my video card messed up or something? It all flickers and changes as I move and look around. And it's not the mods, it did this stock, before I install the MrMMods.

If I bought the cheapest iMac at base model right now, in a month or two could I buy more RAM for it? Then could I later buy a better video/graphics card and get that put in And could I have these things done by official Apple peoples. Not that I care much - I'd just like to know if official people do this.

I'm selecting my wife's new iMac and I'm uncertain which video card to get. She uses Adobe CS3 professionally and will upgrade to Snow Leopard. But she doesn't edit video, watch movies, play games on her Mac. And her CS3 work seems not too heavy, since it still works well on a 6-year old dual G5 system. But I understand Snow Leopard has support for GPU acceleration. For graphic design work, are the GT130 or ATI 4850 worth the upgrade price over the GT120?

Recently my 20" iMac has been showing some strange graphic problems when starting up, it doesn't happen all the time. Its hard to explain, what it looks like so I was able to capture a video of it on my iPhone, it happens near the end of the boot cycle; Here's a link to the video; [URL:...] I've tried clearing the PRAM etc and no luck. The iMac will be two years old this August, I don't have AppleCare. Do you think the video card is dying?

Under average useage (browsing the web, typing a letter, writing an email, editing photos in iPhoto, using Photoshop Elements etc.) what difference would the user see by switching to the 9600M GT card over the 9400M?
I ask cos, in the nine months I've owned this MBP, I had never bothered switching to my 9600. I've now done it and notice no difference whatsoever.

Well my desktop just crapped out on me and I really don't want to invest money to rebuild it. I was looking at the IMacs but my one concern is about gaming. I really only play WoW but I also want the option to maybe play something newer. I am a little concerned with Macs lack of video cards and in order to get at least 512mb I have to spend 2k. Do macs not need that extra video power?

I've got an iMac 27" late 2009 with these: Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3Â Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB and I would like to upgrade my "ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB" to something higher with 2 GB. My question is: is it possible? Like taking off the screen and display and replacing the old video card with a new one without any issues?

With the recent Steam for Mac release, I have been thinking about getting a new video card again, however I am looking for reasons to get it. So I am just wondering will I see any speed improvements if I used a better video card on Aperture 3 (running 32bit because I use nik software)? I also use FCP, Photoshop quite often.

Ok so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

Being a history enthusiast of that era, I've been waiting for Empire: Total War to come out for quite a while. I'm also a bit of an enthusiast as well and would really like to get a new iMac. I'm just wondering if anyone out there is playing E:TW on an iMac with Boot Camp and how well it's been working. Any particular video card recommended over the others?

I am in the market for a Mac Pro for all my FCP editing. I found a guy who can get me a great deal on a brand new 8 core 2.8GHz Mac Pro, but it is the older version before the "Nehalem" chips.
This computer will be right around the same price as purchasing a brand new quad core 2.93GHz Nehalem Mac Pro.
So what I need to figure out is, what is more important, more cores, or faster newer processor?
