Oct 27, 2010
im about to buy a Imac 2.66ghz C2D and i just have a few questions, The paticular imac im buying has a Ati radeon 2600 HD, and ive been hearing on the internet that it doesnt support features within snow leopard, what kind of features will i be missing out on? Will it hinder the speeds of the computer or will i have any paticular issues when installing snow leopard because of having this graphics card..

noting the diff which is speed, type of ram, graphics card and harddisk. My more impt factor is the graphics card. Is the new Nvidia 9400m better than the old ATI card? Not sure which to get... how to balance with the new machine with the price....My assesment is that... the diff is about $100 or even equal if i upgrade the old model to 4gb ram. So, is the ~$100 diff justifiable to get the old one cos its $100 cheaper but get a better graphics card? Or pay $100 more to get the new model with a bit slower CPU, lousier graphics card but double the hard disk and DDR3 ram compared to DDR2.

When I load a photo from a thumbnail in iPhoto the photo loads a version that is slightly blurry, then after about 5-10 seconds it jumps into focus. I am using a 2006 24inch iMac and the graphics card only has 256k of memory.
Is the delay in focus a function of iPhoto or is it because I have an older graphics card? I'm asking because I want to buy a newer computer (probably a Mac Pro) and am wondering if a faster graphics card will speed up the photo loading.

with this talk of new imacs and mac mini's I thought it would be fun to speculate on what gfx card they may choose to include in the high end model. After a little searching around on what mobile cards are around my bet is on the Geforce GTS 160m. They seem to be going almost exclusively with Nvidia with the exception of the 4850.

I recently read somewhere that I can actually change the graphics card on my mac. If so where can I buy the ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card? and how much will that set me back? And could I get this upgrade done by my local nextbyte retail store? If it is possible to have nextbyte upgrade my card would they send it off to apple?
I really just need this card so I can play aoe3 on all settings high and be able to handle games like cod4, quake and all those graphic hungry games.

My 3 yr old IMac G5 (no isight) seems to be real sluggish in graphics dept. I never used to have problems watching hulu videos, now they stutter. When I play warcraft, the game struggles to keep up if I'm in an area where there is lots of players. Would a new graphics card help? Is it replaceable on my IMac model?

I want to use a windows Driving Simulator on my iMac, probably using Bootcamp. The system requirements are
Graphics - Any 64MB 3D graphics card or above*
*NVidia GeForce FX or higher / ATI Radeon 9500 or higher. Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported. Other integrated graphics chipsets are not supported.
I have an 20 month old iMac with a ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. Will that do? I have absolutely no idea about this stuff!

It only took me a year to figure it out, but I've confirmed that the problems I've been having for the past year with the screen freezing (thought the computer was freezing) are owed to a bad graphics card. The card I have in my 2.16GHz 24" iMac (purchased Sep '06), NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, is indeed ready to die. I found some articles that said the graphics card is easily upgradable in my iMac. If true, which replacement card should I buy? And is this something I can install myself, simply by removing the cover, pulling out the old card and installing the new?

If I bought the cheapest iMac at base model right now, in a month or two could I buy more RAM for it? Then could I later buy a better video/graphics card and get that put in And could I have these things done by official Apple peoples. Not that I care much - I'd just like to know if official people do this.

Im going to throw out a scenario and see if anyone sees flaw in my logic.I first will mention that I will stick with console gaming and wont play games on the imac, although I thought in 07 there was a youtube video of someone playing crysis on a 2600GT imac (im not sure what the real graphics card was or if thats even a real one). I will be editing photos using aperture or some other photo editor, running Vuze nonstop, 12 tab browsing, and also probably watching a movie. My G5 ALS imac did that with about 3 tab browsing pretty easy. Also it wasnt editing photos. ANYWAYS. Amazon has the i5 for 1972.98 and applecare for 135.99 for a total of 2108.97

I have a 21.5 inch base model imac. It appears to have moderate yellowing on the bottom 1/3 of the screen so thinking about returning it today when I go to the Apple Store for my broken iphone. I was thinking about jumping to the 21.5 with the 1TB drive and dedicated graphics card if I do exchange. Is it worth the jump?

What would show more immediate quality of graphics and faster on-line refresher rates, a graphics card with more ram or double the memory? Im debating whether to get the 512mb ATI Card or an additional 4 gig or Memory with my new iMac.does Apple not offer the really high end ATI Cards with 1 gig of ram?

I have an 06/07 model 24" iMac - I believe it was the only one of that make that had an internal PCI express slot...currently with an nvidia 7600GT in it.
If I were to get dirty with some screwdrivers, would it be possible to upgrade my graphics card to something compatible with MacSteam? (Nvidia 8 series+)

Recently my 20" iMac has been showing some strange graphic problems when starting up, it doesn't happen all the time. Its hard to explain, what it looks like so I was able to capture a video of it on my iPhone, it happens near the end of the boot cycle; Here's a link to the video; [URL:...] I've tried clearing the PRAM etc and no luck. The iMac will be two years old this August, I don't have AppleCare. Do you think the video card is dying?

I installed USB Overdrive (a program), I clicked on restart and my iMac never got up. When I start it, the HDD and fans do work. But there is no boot sound, and when I change sound levels, I cannot hear it. I think, it never makes it to OSX. It does not load the OS. I dont think it is Graphics card (HD2600) failure.
When I try to reset PRAM, nothing happens. Usually I must hear it restart again with loud boot sound but it never happens. Also my keyboard does not seem to work, as the CAPSLOCK button does not light up, when pressed. I changed RAM to different moduls, still the same. I checked the iMac RAM on a different computer, it works. Maybe USB Overdrive killed the USB slots? As my USB keyboard does not seem to work

I purchased my Mac a few weeks ago, wanting to both upgrade my computer.......and play Diablo 3. I do always want the best out of my systems and the person who sold me the mac told me it would be fairly easy to upgrade the card...well he was wrong. He also told me a few days later not to worry about upgrading since the system is already great.
I went to a local Mac store and asked about the upgrade and found out it would be close to or above a grand for the part from Apple and the labor.
Heres the breakdown:
$875 - Card
$130 - Labor
$15 - Shipping (from apple)
Are there any other ways to find this part online cheaper and just hopefully pay for the labor?
I just really dont want to pay a grand just to upgrade my damn video card, and I know within the new year Apple will release a much better fast computer and I'll be mad. I really wish it wasn't such a hard upgrade.

I replaced my macbook pro last week with a MacPro 8 core.
For the last few days the GT120 graphics card was connected to two 24" dell monitors (2407 and 2408).
The 2407 is my main display and was connected via the display port to a display port to DVI-D adaptor and then to the DVI-D port on the screen. The 2408 was connected using the DVI-D on the graphics card straight to the monitor. This setup was great as I couldn't even tell if my mac was on or off because I couldn't hear any off the fans.
The only problem was that when running full screen video (EyeTV/Quicktime), the picture would sometimes stutter. After looking at the apple store website, a new GT120 was 99 for students so I picked one up yesterday.
The original GT120 is in slot 1 and is connected to my 2407 (main display) via DVI-D, the second GT120 is in slot 2 and connect to my 2408 via DVI -D. Now the problem is noise! I can now hear my mac whirring away all night (MacPro in my bedroom).
Any idea what the problem could be? When i run iTunes visualizer, both displays average at about 63fps and there is no stuttering of the picture. One thing I have noticed (using hardware monitor) is that when play itunes visualizer on full screen the GT120 in slot one uses 22% and the GT120 in slot two uses 99%.

Like is having a higher end GPU only good if you play games? Will it still boost the computers performance even if I do stuff that doesn't involve videogames?

I have two issues with my present X1900: it's not going to be OpenGL compliant come September, and more pressingly on a day to day basis, for some reason Eve Online, the game I'm rather addicted to, doesn't like me using two video cards - a stock GeForce 7300 and the Radeon.
I haven't been able to troubleshoot my way to confirming why I have the issue (and I've posted on Eve online forums - no one else seems to have the issue) but I get really odd graphics glitches when I have more than 2 screens 'detected'. Rather, when I have screens on more than 1 video card. I think it has to do with an ATI/nVidia conflict while running a Mac port of the Linux Port of Eve.
So I was hoping to get the 8800 perhaps, but they're getting pretty hard to find. Any other suggestions? Performance-wise I've been happy with the X1900, don't really *need* to upgrade, but I'd like to maximize OpenGL and solve this confilct issue so I'm not constantly climbing in behind my desk to unplug and replug DVI cables - I now run 3x monitors and a projector.
Price counts for me, I'd like to keep this upgrade as cheap as possible - don't use 'Pro' apps. I'm not afraid to flash a PC card if there's decent instructions around somewhere. This is actually a PC X1900 with a custom fan/heatsink fitted (Xcellero X2 or something? It's been a while).
