IMac :: Need To Install Antivirus / Spyware Removal Software?
Apr 18, 2010
First time owner of Mac and never thinking about switching back to PC. I bought the IMAC 2l inch a couple of days ago. I am wondering if I need to install any antivirus software, ccleaner, ad aware, spybot or spywareblaster like I have on my PCS.

I'm only going to be using Windows XP through Parallels for 2 applications - Quicken and SportTracks. I will NEVER browse the web through XP on my Mac. Do I need to install antivirus software on my Windows installation? I'm going to be running the applications in coherence mode, so I'm afraid of the system interrupting me asking or notifying about firus definition updates.

I received my copy of Snow Leopard and I would like to do a fresh install. However, in doing this, I will lose my copy of Norton Antivirus that I downloaded from my college. I cannot get another copy of this until January as I am not currently a student. Is there a way I can save this program so that I can do a fresh install versus simply upgrading?

Is it true that antivirus software is not really needed with a Mac? I do not do pron sites but do go to TPB some but mostly for videos but not apps.
So, if I need AV, what are the good (cheap) ones? What about spyware/malware?

I can't seem to figure out how to remove the logic board from a G5 w/iSight that I've been given to have a look at. What happens is that the unit powers on, the LCD display slightly brightens (getting power) but stays dark, and that's it. No beeps, boops or other responses beyond that. If you remove the RAM chips, the LED power lights gets mad and blinks at you, but that's about it. On the board itself I get the two diagnostic LEDs lit. The third never even flickers.

I've read quite a lot about the glossy screens on iMacs and advice offered has been to use a 3m matt film product or remove the glass from the front. Is anyone actually using either of those 2 methods successfully with their iMac? The 3m matt film sounds like it might be awkward to fit without airbubbles etc and might affect sharpness/colour etc Removing the glass from the front could make the screen vulnerable when using things like calibrator devices that need to sit on the screen to work, I don't care what it looks like BTW
Power and features wise the i7 iMac is all the computer I need but need a matt screen is no good for me. I will splurge on a macpro and monitor but its just more than I need and so would prefer the saving

I would like to uninstall old anti-virus files. Both Virusbarrier and Norton were used at one time. Both programs have been deleted but I still get asked about Virsubarrier renewal as well as Norton safe files questions. I've gone thru applications, library folders and I've used Appzapper. Where are the hidden files?

Last week I got a malware attack from opening up a Facebook message. This caused my iMac to run very slow and to crash all the time. I ran the latest security update which found and removed the malware itself. But still my iMac is running very slow and crashing when doing two jobs at once.
Any reason as to why?Is it still infected? or has the malware corrupted my hd or memory?
My iMac details:
Version 10.6.8
Processor 3.06
Memory 4gb
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

OK, I'm not the most cautious web browser in the world and from time to time have found myself connected to sites that were probably a bad choice. I haven't had any problems in the past year until this morning. My SO was emailing someone and several error messages popped up regarding System Errors and an Internet Antivirus Pro warning, which of course wanted them to download the program, I assume. It was not downloaded. The mouse cursor would still move, but you couldn't click on anything on the screen. So a hard force quit was done, and the modem was shut off.
Turned the Mac back on, ran a Intego VirusBarrier check, all was OK. I then googled "Internet Antivirus PRO" and it sounds as if it is a major piece of malware/spware/trojan....something bad that is very difficult to remove(from a PC...that is-there even is a YouTube video showing you how to go about the removal process on Windows). I can find NOTHING on this "program" being on a Mac. Should I be concerned? Is it as easy as going into my downloads folder and deleting anything with an .'.exe' in it, or is it more complicated.

My employer offers free Norton antivirus software for Mac or PC to all its employees for use on the employees' home computers. Question: Should I load the software on my new 2009 iMac, or pass on it? Free is great, but would it do more harm than good, such as slowing down my computer? FWIW, at the Apple store several employees told me neither they nor the store manager uses antivirus software on their personal macs.

Are there any spyware / antivirus scanners for use on the mac which I could use?
I checked my router logs and I seem to be getting several accesses to my macbook IP from several different external IPs on the same port 30124.
It is making me think I may have some spyware or something.

I keep getting problems with passwords and I can only presume I have spyware issues on my mac book pro.
I want to completely start again but there are 3 issues:
1. I don't have my MS Office for Mac original disc although I do have the product ID number and I do have my original OS X install discs and Iwork 08 disc.
2. How do I backup absolutely everything so that as soon as I reinstall I can start where I began?
3. I am not very technical and don't have a clue how to uninstall everything and then reinstall. How do I do this so that any possible threats are totally gone?

But qmasterd is, according to activity monitor. Even after denying qmasterd all connections with little snitch, qmasterd connects with servers I don't know. What's up? Spyware?

Also, I think I downloaded an old version of Messenger for Mac.
It probably have no sort of malware or viruses but assuming it may have, does the "sandboxing" technique by Apple prevent any malware from interfering with my mac. And does deleting tha old version clear any malware associated with it as well?

Every time I go to open my safari browser a little grey box appears saying I am getting unauthorized access on my browsers. I believe this problem has occurred from streaming a movie.
The box also says this network may be infected. I then click okay and a red screen appears with a white box with writing in it saying to call a phone number immediately and that my mac has found two malicious viruses but I have read online that this isn't a virus just something attached to online streaming.
I don't know if I should download a program to get rid of this or to do something else. I tried to reset safari but it didn't work.

It started yesterday, and I am worried my computer has been hacked. For some background it is a 20" iMac running OSX 10.4. What is happening is when we start up Safari, mail, Firefox, etc we get a Network spyware alert box that pops up, and says the following for example when starting firefox: Firefox is attempting to connect to a server with the internet address xx.xxx.xx.xx(removed numbers due to not being sure if these should be kept secret). Then it says [URL] on port 80. Fire fox is not authorized to make this connection. Do you want to allow the connection,or block it? Program location:/applications/firefox.app It then has radio buttons with the following options:
O Apply until quits
O Apply today
O Apply once
O Apply always
On the right of those radio buttons are two boxes withthe following options:
Apply to all ports
Apply to all internet addresses
I am worried we may have been hacked, but I have no idea. I click on block when I get these pop-ups,and sometimes it will allow the program to work just fine, and sometimes not. Have we been hacked? What can I do to fix this? We do have a Allume netblockade program, but it has been on the computer for years, and only now has this problem come up.
