IMac :: 24" Recently The Screen Has Began To Flicker?
Jul 27, 2009i bought a used 24" aluminum imac (2008 model) that was about 6 months old, but recently the screen has began to flicker...usually from a half to a full second every few hours or so. it sometimes will flicker if the mac is nudged on either side, but this doesnt always happen, even when i TRY to initiate it. its not really major, but im just worried that the whole display will crap out soon. ive found threads about screen flickering with macbooks and led displays, but nothing for imacs yet. im not sure if this matters, but the person i bought it from opened it up and replaced the hard drive. another contributing factor may be that i constantly run torrents and my mac sometimes stays on for days at a time. it doesnt seem to overheat and ive never had this problem with my other imac (2007 17" white). when im not using it, i keep the disks active, but put the monitor to sleep to prevent burn in. im assuming that since this guy replaced the HD, this would void any warranty, so i think im pretty screwed as far as thats concerned unless i pay out of my own pocket.

Jul 23, 2010So I tried to partition my 1TB Seagate main hard drive that's in my iMac, and twice my iMac locked up at the "Shrinking volume" stage. I tried to shrink it down from 1TB to 600GB and it not only did not work, my system locked up (I gave it plenty of time) to the point where I had to forcibly shut it down and a subsequent verification of the disk revealed that it needed to be repaired using Disk Utility after restarting and booting from my OS X installation disk, which worked just fine.
I decided to try again, because the first time, I had not restarted the computer in a while, so I thought I'd "flush out" any temporary files, cache, inactive RAM, and whatever else might have been in the way the first time around. However, this time, the screen simply turned off after 15 or so minutes. Once again, it got stuck at the "Shrinking volume" point and there was also no way to revive it except for a forced shutdown, which, by the way, I did by holding down the power button on the back of the iMac. Same story, I had to restart and repair the disk using my OS X installation disk, which resolved the repair issue.
One more thing. I remember that when I first received my iMac, I was able to partition the drive in order to add a volume for Boot Camp, which I formatted in NTFS right before my Windows 7 installation. All of that worked great and I was actually impressed with how flawless that whole process executed. Eventually, I decided that I no longer needed Windows 7, so I erased the partition and re-consolidated it with the main OS X partition, again, without any problems.
With all of that said, I'm not sure what to try next, but I would really like to create 2 additional volumes. I thought I would try using Disk Utility again, but this time, booting from my OS X installation disk. Then again I didn't want to chance it again, as I have not made any backups yet. I'm in the process of making a backup right now.
So what do you guys think? Should I try to do just that, using Disk Utility after booting into the installation disk? What do you guys think is the reason as to why I can't just resize and partition using Disk Utility after a regular boot-up like I was able to before? What else could I try? Any third-party software titles like I used in Windows? Acronis and Partition Manager come to mind. I'd rather do it in OS X, though.
ITunes :: Get The Shrink Corner To Shrink Down The Window To A Much Smaller Size?
Jun 19, 2012for iTunes 10.6.3 on OS 10.5.8 ppc, is there a way to get the shrink corner to shrink down the iTunes window to a much smaller size? With this new verson, the window is barely adjustable down, & takes up about 70% of an active screen on this 19 in. widescreen LCD. I downloaded & installed sizewell but doesn't give this "shrinkdown" function.

Nov 1, 2009I'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

Nov 7, 2010I've been researching for a while on upgrading my white intel iMac from a "Core Duo" processor to a "Core 2 Duo" processor. The processor I would like to use is a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5750 processor, which would give me 2 additional cores as well as a small speed bump from 1.83 ghz to 2.0 ghz. I figured compatibility should be fine considering the FSB speed (667 Mhz) is the same. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone tell me if this will work for sure?

Jun 11, 2009I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

IMac :: Using Gradient With IMac ISight Intel 2006?
May 8, 2009Recently my iMac had been experiencing problems, I took apart and checked everything and put back together. Problems were gone but the screen suddenly started gradienting from brighter on the top to darker on the bottom. Brightness overall is also lower now.
My question is what can be creating this? The black tape that was around was ripped, I've heard it's creating static isolation, can that be it? Also I possibly pulled power cord too hard, can it be possible that display is not getting enough power?

managed to boot to Leopard install disk. backed into Disk Utility.... Verify System Disk produces: "Invalid B-tree node size...Disk Verify / Repair fail".
too bad too sad... no more information.
I don't know enough to know whether this is a SW failure or a drive failure, and my searches has led me here.

IMac :: Intel Based IMac Ram Options?
Apr 10, 2010i've got an iMac from late 2006. and i'm trying to upgrade the ram..here's the specs...iMac intel MA589LL/A 20in 2.16 1GB ram 250 gig ect so on the box it says upgradeable to 3 GB of ram... but the computer has two slots... which currently have a 512MB card in each of them. so my question is how do i install three gigs of ram? a 1GB card and a 2GB card? this doesn't seem to make sense, because i thought you were always supposed to keep them balanced.... so should i just install 2 - 2GB cards... for a total of 4 gigs... even though the computer will only used 3 gigs?

After each input, e.g. opening preview or a browser, the coloured turning disc appeared and nothing happened anymore. Several restarts, also in safe mode, were unsuccessful. I could not switch to another user. Restart is only possible at all from installation disc but thereafter problem remains the same.

IMac :: Debating Between IMac And MBP... Leaning Towards IMac?
Aug 15, 2010I hope you don't mind helping a guy out in his choice in what he truly needs... so I guess I'll get down to the basics.
First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
- Needs to be able to record up to 32 tracks of audio
- Needs to be able to render high quality tracks
- Minimal latency
- Able to run some of the less graphic intensive games out now
- Easy on the eyes for extended periods of time
Oh, I'm also an amateur filmmaker, I love filming, editing, and producing, etc.Would you guys suggest the i5? i7? However, the how to do it words seem to suggest that everything on the G5 should be neat. Nov 26, 2007Can some one please post up picture/video's or direct to a site on how to open my intel imac up? I purchased a WD internal Hard Drive and plan on getting it tomorrow. I want to know how to install it on my computer. I'm not new to opening computer and installing hardware (Was a computer tech support for IBM compatible computers).
After searching for a bit and reading the forum, i unpluged my computer and took it to my bed to examine it. According to my findings, i believe there are 5 screw (not flat head or star) that i need to take out in order for the back part of my imac to get apart from the front see thru plastic part. After looking at some pics on google i think i should be able to determine my internal hard drive.
Can anyone confirm if i need to take out those 5 screws under the imac, not the once to take out the ram, i upgraded my ram no problem.
And it would be much help to me to see pictures on take my imac apart and what to see and what to take out or cables to unplug and what NOT to unplug to install my new 500gig WD internal hard drive.
If unable to do so, many somone can direct me to a site with pics or video on how to do it. I saw one on a macbook... Macbook is different then imac.
