OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Boot From External Firewire Disk

I just purchased a LaCie triple interface (500GB disk to use as a bootable external drive to support our family's family of mac's, all running 10.6.8 including a 2006 Core Duo iMac, a 2007 Core2Duo iMac, a Core2Duo Mini, and a 2010 MacBook Pro.Â
The firewire drive does not appear as a bootable option on any of the computers, attached to either of the iMacs via the Firewire 400 port (through a 400 to 800 adaptor), or attached via the Firewire 800 port on the MBP. This is the profile of the LaCie via System Profiler on the iMac?

My iMac is currently being booted from external disk via Firewire 800. I have to do this until I receive new install disks from apple to resore my machine.
The computer is usable, however internet is very slow... I have other devides, windows machine, ipad, iphone and they all run okay.
It seems that because I have booted via the external disk..... internet is slow. Could this be as the OS is needed to refer to the external disk?
I have a bit of a problem: I cant access my Mac because I lost the password. I recently changed my passwords on several macs, including an old PPC PowerMac G5 from ca 2005. I run 10.5.8 on this and it works flawlessly. I need to use this machine for important work. Â
So this is what I have tried so far:Â
1) Tested with all known passwords I have used in the past.
2) Tried to boot from a 10.6 install DVD
3) Tried to boot from just C and later Command C
4) Tried a different install DVD 10.4Â (I dont have the original 10.5 DVD)
5) Tried to use T and Target Disk Mode from an iMac with Lion. (disconnected all other FW disks etc.)
6) Tried different Firewire cables
7) Tried different Firewire connections.Â
It starts obediently and show every sign of Mac-Happiness. But I simply can't get the darn thing to boot. I think it normally should have booted using 10.6? Â
I have a Macbook Pro with an inoperative slot-loading Superdrive. I purchased Snow Leopard today, planning to use my Mac Pro w/working Superdrive in Firewire Target Disk Mode to install the OS on my Macbook Pro. I can mount the Snow Leopard install via TDM, but the installer informs me that I cannot install Snow Leopard from "this volume" (presumably because the Target Disk Mode connection isn't recognized as an optical drive?). I've also tried to use "Remote Install OS X," but because my MBP is not an Air, it doesn't have the necessary firmware to select a network boot on startup by holding Option. Am I out of luck until I get access to a firewire external DVD drive?
I have a 1Ghz PowerPC G4 iMac and want to delete everything and start again with Leopard. (it seems to be within the system reqs.) Problem is the DVD drive isn't functioning properly. It sees the OSX DVD but won't boot from it. Question - What's the best alternative method? Create a boot firewire disk?

I ran verify disk, and was told I need to repair disk... I try to boot from my OSX snow leopard disk buy holding down C at reboot, but I get nothing... I hear it go to the disk, but then I just hear clicking and noise from dVD. I can boot normal, but I can't boot from safe mode or DVD? What can I do?
I have a Macbook Pro 17" with 10.6.8 installed but won't bootup. It stays on the logo and spinning gear screen and won't proceed from there. I have tried to reboot from a Snow Leopard install disk but it won't recognize it and haven't been able to startup from another computer using firewire connection.

Is it possible to boot from an external Firewire DVD Drive? It certainly isnt from an external USB DVD. Real answers only please, not "I think so" ones based on HDDs or rumours you may have heard!...
Background: I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.
Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...
My hard drive recently crashed. I just bought a new one and installed it myself. Now it's simply a matter of reinstalling the operating system, which is where I'm having trouble. I insert the Snow Leopard Install DVD into the drive. I power on the computer and hold 'C' (I've tried Option too) to boot from the disc, but it doesn't work. It spits out the disc after a few seconds, whether I hold 'C' or not, and then it gives me a folder icon with a question mark in it in the center of the screen, the same thing it showed when my hard drive first crashed.
I have a cramped windows partition on my hard drive which is now full, I'd love to reclaim the space by moving it to my Firewire hard drive which has much more available to dedicate to Windows. I used the "Restore" feature of Disk Utility creating an identical copy but when I restarted my computer to boot from it there was no choice of a firewire drive. I checked in the Startup Disk pref pane it wasn't to be seen, and that didn't even show the current Windows partition that was an option when I restarted. When I get info on the volumes in disk utility it says EXACTLY the same thing about each. So needless to say, I'm slightly annoyed but somehow I think I'm trying to get it to work in a way that it can't.
I want to create a minimal recovery boot disk for SL. I've followed how-to's on creating one for 10.4 and 10.5, but so far it I couldn't get it to work with 10.6. If you have successfully done this, or can point me to a pre-made image or how-to.
I've got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running Tiger 10.4.11.I've successfully installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 onto an external drive (or so the screen said).My mac recognizes the external drive as a start-up disk and allows me to select it as such. But upon restart, machine comes up in Tiger.My external drive is brand new, OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro using a fire-wire connection. After installation but two failed attempts at start-up, I ran first aid on the external and no repairs were necessary. Using System Prefs I selected the external as my start-up disk, hit Re-start, but machine still restarts from Tiger
The only other piece of information that may be vital, that I can think of, is that I misunderstood the "Mac readiness" of the drive when I took it out of the box. I first erased it (unnecessarily). Then I discovered this mistake, and made a point to re-format it using the GUID partition setting. Computer claimed that installation was successful upon installing Snow Leopard.But now, machine will not start up in Snow Leopard.

I've been a long time lurker on these forums and you've helped me out numerous times when my computers decided to stop working.
I got my Snow Leopard disk in the post today but unfortunately my disk drive in my Macbook Pro seems to finally be well and truly knackered.
I should be able to borrow a usb/firewire disk drive from a friend, so would I be able to install ok from this external drive, and is there anything I would need to mess around with to make it work?
I had some bad experiences in the past with my first MacBook Air (version 2.1) in which external drives kept getting erased without any good reason. I think it's due to the fact that I had to connect a USB cord to another computer when I had an external drive plugged into the MBA because the MBA could not power it on its own. Â I thought it was due to a bad external drive and I took it to Samsung service center and complained that their drive was malfunctioning. I got a refund. But later on, I found that the same thing happened to another external drive and to a USB flash drive, so I realized that it had nothing to do with the external disks and something to do with the computer. I used the same drives that got erased on a newer MacBook Air (version 3.2) and I never had the sudden erasure problem. Â
Anyhow that's the background to why I want to make a clone of the external disks in my possession. If for some reason, the external disk gets suddenly erased, I would like a copy somewhere in safekeeping so that I do not lose all my movies. Â
How do I make a clone of an external disk? Â
I will be using a MacBook Air (3.2) for this task. It has two USB ports. Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this? Just choose a source disk (external disk I want to clone) and a destination disk (the external disk where I want it to be cloned to)?

My OSX partition shows up fine in my Bootcamped Windows 7 x64, and I can read/write to it fine. My external, a Western Digital 1tb drive formated HFS+, is connected thru firewire, and it doesn't seem to mount or show up at all.
I have no id� whats wrong, I want to install Snow Leopard(from the external) on my Core2duo Macbook pro, which is running Leopard at the moment.
I have a Snow Leopard image, and I have used Disc utility to partition the external hard drive (GUID), and I assume the partition and install went well on the external, because in Disc start the external appears as OSX 10.6.
Then the problem: The macbook wont boot from the newly made external it just gives me this sign (of course without the colours).
I have tried to start the macbook normal, and with the option key held down were the external pops up.
I have also tried to chose the external in disc start and reboot with no luck.
I have tried to start the Snow Leopard install(external) within Leopard where the install start fine, but when it reboots and wants to continue the install, the sign appears.
The external harddrive is a 5400rpm 40gb 2,5" which is only powered by the usb port maybe thats the problem?
I'm planning on buying an external firewire 2.5 disk, and i am wondering if there is any real difference between firewire 400 and 800 if the disk is 5400 rpm speed. The reason i am asking is i cant find the passport studio with firewire 800 anywhere here where i live, only the firewire 400 version.
I have a friend who's oldish-Unibody MacBook Pro started giving him the folder with question mark-flashing symbol on boot-up. I guess it could be PRAM, but in any case, he wants to get his data off the hard drive. The computer wouldn't boot up from the install disk (holding 'c' on boot), all I have managed is to put it into Target Disk Mode, with my own MPB. The funny thing is, that it works, but all that mounts on my computer is the Install Disc (in his disk drive) and his hard drive shows up in my disk utility (see below), but it will not mount, and if I try to repair it, it gives me an error and DUPLICATES the original 'root' drive. Does this mean the hard drive itself is damaged and we need to go to a 'data specialist' to get everything off or is there anything else I could try?
Have late 2006 iMac 24'' and I can't boot from external FireWire drive. If I connect the same external drive via usb2 I can boot from it but it is slower than FireWire800 would be. The external drive is in i-tec 3.5 External Case.Â

I want to get one of those hard disk 'holders' that allows you to plug an internal-type hard disk into the USB or Firewire port of another laptop. I want to know if they need to be specific to the type of hard disk/laptop or if they're more of a one-size-fits-all type of thing. The hard disk is a solid state type that I installed in a mid-2010 model MacBook which has now failed. I want to connect it to a 2005-model PowerBook G4. Can this be done and what do i need to buy to do it?
So here is my bright idea. I still may want to have Windows on my iMac for work projects *sigh* I think I came up with a solution, I rather not partition my iMac (when I buy it) 1TB drive for Windows. Don't want Windows on my main disk - I need the storage for Mac things, personal stuff etc. Is it possible to boot from a Firewire connected external HDD to run Windows?
im trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on to an external drive. I want to run Leopard off of an External Hard Drive which will connect via Firewire of USB 2.0. I have booted up using the install DVD that i bought a couple years ago to upgrade from Tiger. However each time i install i get an error saying that it cannot be installed. It allows me to start the install and is almost complete before i get this error. I have it partitioned using the Apple Partition Map so i can boot up on a PowerPC computer.
What should i do to install 10.5 on an external drive?
Even though my MacBook has a built-in iSight, I still use my old external FireWire iSight since I run my MacBook in clamshell mode, and my external monitor doesn't have a built-in webcam. All in all, I love it - it works well, looks good, and I use a nifty gooseneck stand with it that can be repositioned just about anywhere. It was perfect for my needs, and I was never interested in changing webcams. However, after upgrading to 10.6, my external iSight no longer works. I have no idea how to fix this. I know they're old, but has anyone heard whether or not Apple was making them obsolete?
I have Snow Leopard installed on a partition on a Firewire HD, back when my MacBook Pro was also running SN. Since then I have upgraded to Lion. I recently tried to boot from the SN partition on the FW HD, only to get the 3 beep error (which I discovered later means the Mac can't boot from an earlier version than the current OS it's running...)Â
So, I would now like to upgrade the Firewire HD version of OSX from Snow Leopard to Lion [keeping the user folder in place, with docs, apps etc], but the installer says it can't be done. Do I have to erase the partition and do a clean install? It's pretty annoying if I do!Â
