IMac :: For Photography Amateur Work?

Jun 18, 2010

I currently have a 17 inch Unibody macbook pro. It has a C2D 2.66, 4gb of ram, a 9600 512mb videocard and a 120gb SSD. I use it for general web-browsing, itunes, e-mail, and amateur photography with photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3. I have the oportunity to trade in my macbook pro for a 27 inch IMac, with an I7 processor, 8gb of ram and a 1tb Harddrive. My question is if it will be worth it?
I hardly use the laptop has a portable solution, it is mainly a desktop replacement, so I'm not too concern about portability. My concern is going from a C2D with SSD to an I7 with HDD. For my use, will the I7 be really faster? Or will the SSD on the macbook make the system feel faster? Look forward to hear from you. Have to decide today, as I have the Imac reserved until tomorrow.

Applications :: CAD Architect Software Best For Amateur?

Jun 15, 2010

Im looking for a CAD type piece of software for my Macbook that will do 2D architect type drawings. Something flexible that will let me draw floor plans (suitable for house planning applications), elevations and I guess in the end may let me do room layouts (although this is less of a priority). I am trying to help out my Dad with his planning application for their new house (an architect already submitted plans but they now need to down size and dont want to pay for another architect to re-draw everything, so currently hes doing it himself by hand) Ideally Id like it to be able to calculate floor space too (apparently he needs to keep it under 170m) so would prefer not have to have to calculate it manually if I can avoid it. Ive looked around online and the following seem to be popular recommendations;

HighDesign
MacDraft Pro or PE not sure which is best?
Punch! Home & Landscape Design Studio
TurboCAD Mac Designer 2D / Mac Deluxe 2D/3D / Mac Pro v5 also not sure which will be most suitable?

But I have no idea how easy any of them are to use (Id be a beginner) and if they can be used on my little Macbook. I am happy to pay for the software but cant afford the likes to Vectorworks or ArchiCAD, which is why Ive narrowed it down to the above. I have looked at Sketchup and love playing around with it found the intro user video very helpful, but dont need 3D and don't think its detailed enough for the planning application drawings. Can anyone give me advice on the best one to buy, which system is most user friendly and can they be used on a Macbook? Do any of them have really good forums and user guides/videos to help me get started? Also if there is other software which would be better for my purpose please let me know. Lots of questions and sorry for the long waffle, but through it best to give as much info as possible.

Applications :: For Photography/Lightroom Or Aperture?

Sep 25, 2010

I am by no means a professional photographer, but I do love to take photos. I have about 9,000+ photos in iPhoto now, but Im looking for something a little more advanced. I will retouch my photos from time to time, but more so, I want to organize my photos better. I notice a lot of people use Aperture and Lightroom, and I was wondering if someone had opinions of the two, and which would be the better way to go.

Hardware :: New Monitor For Photography Purposes - IPS?

May 3, 2010

I am in the market for a new monitor, I would look at matte IPS monitor, but so far (and I haven't done that much research so far) I have only really found the Dell 2209wa which looks great but its only 1680x1050 and I would much prefer 1920x1200 or something to that extent. Those are really my only requirements matte and 1920+ but I also don't want to go above 24" because then it just starts getting too big (especially since it will be in a dorm room next year).

MacBook Pro :: Is Monitor Calibration Essential For Photography?

Aug 7, 2009

I have a MPB 15" bought on the very day of release. I am now using it to edit photos for selling to various publishers. Do I need to get a monitor calibrator like the Spyder3 Pro?

I went to this link to perform 'by eye' checks on my screen:
[URL]

my monitor is uncalibrated, yet it passed the tests with the following scores:
white test: 253 is distinguishable from white
black test: 7 is distinguishable from black
hue test: the two samples are clearly distinguishable
gamma: standing back the middle grey matches the outside gray

These tests were seemingly meant to show how bad an uncalibrated monitor would fare. However it came out very well.

IMac :: Would The DDR3 RAM Work

Mar 7, 2009

I have a Dec 08 purchased 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4G of 800 MHz DDR 2 SDRAM installed and lovely it is too

I note the new iMac's now use DDR3 RAM and wonder (for future reference only) if the DDR3 RAM would work in my iMac if I swapped sticks.

I suppose whilst I'm on a roll of asking a question....I may as well try another one.....

Would (again for future reference) the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB be fitable (if that was a word....which it is not) in place of my GS 8800 512.

i have been wondering where the top end imac sits in relation to the rest of apples line up. for example the top end imac is far from any normal consumer needs (core 2 duo 3GHz for iphoto anyone?) but many pro's only want a macpro for working on. so where is this machine meant to be? consumer? prosumer (what ever that is)? pro?

i use my imac for video editing and motion graphics and it works like a dream.

IMac :: Won't Work With Lamp Modifications

Sep 25, 2006

I just bought a 17'' lamp-style G4 iMac with a dead logic board for the screen, with the intent of doing some fun modifications, just because I have some spare time. There are 2 things I would like to ask you all about. If you reply (and all constructive or humorous replies are much appreciated!), keep in mind that I am fairly knowledgeable about electronics and am good at soldering/wiring. Anything I don't know how to do, I have friends that are professional electrical engineers (my day job is working on the ATLAS experiment for the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva).

1) I have a perfect, working iMac G4 that has served me well for many years in the same lamp style with a 15'' monitor. Is it possible to gut the 15'' and put it in the 17''? The fit of the components doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to work and be more or less as functional as the current machine. I might be able to build some spacers or something if the fit is not perfect.

2) What do you think the chances are of me stuffing the innards of a Mac Mini inside the 15'' or 17'' chassis? My main concern is the screen connection. I might be able to jury-rig something so that the wires coming from the neck go to a DVI or whatever port is on the Mac Mini to do it that way, I wonder if there isn't a better solution?

Have at it. If I go through with this, I plan to post pictures and a step-by-step account of the process.

and to the people who will undoubtedly bring up copyright/legal infringements. this will not be for sale.
