Software :: IBook G3 Not Start Up - Hangs Up At Blue Screen
Feb 10, 2006My IBook G3 will not start up. I can get the gray apple screen with pinwheel and then after a really long time it will go to a blank blue screen. A couple times it went to the login screen instead but in the user id it says "other" and when I try to enter my username and password it won't recognize me. I am a college student and one of the Apple geniuses here did a check of my hard drive and it checked out okay. We were not able to get it to start up in safe mode; it seemed like it was starting in safe mode but then it came to the login screen and would not allow me to login with my usual information. I was able to start up in single user mode and run fsck which found a couple things and after another fsck it said everthing was fine. But, it still gets hung up at startup. When I try to boot from the OS X installation CD it doesn't seem to be booting up with it, it only goes to the screen to install OS X. According to the directions on the Apple support site when I insert the CD and start up holding down the "c" key it should start up and then I should be able to repair permissions but I can't get that far.

Sep 21, 2008I woke up this morning and my iMac G5 (w/ Leopard) was frozen. I restarted it manually, but it would freeze on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM - any other ideas?
What can I do in Safe Mode that might fix my comp? I haven't recently installed any applications, and I have all "open at login" items turned off.
IMac :: Hang Up On Blue Screen - Only Boots In Safe Mode
Jun 18, 2009Tried everything from archive and install (wouldn't read disk2 until the 9th try and ended up with 9 system folders). Then tried an Erase and Install. Still it refuses to boot. Get's hung up at the blue screen. Will only boot in safe mode. Now for the last few days even the startup chime is missing. Tried PRAM and NVRAM resets. no help. Won't boot from DiskWarrior boot disk either. Just hangs

Dec 8, 2008My iMac G5 froze. I restarted it manually, but it kept freezing on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM.
Finally I resorted to an Archive & Install. That didn't work so I did a clean install but that didn't help either. After having done everything under the sun to it to get it to work, it will still only start up in safe mode. I even tried starting up off each of my two external fire wire drives with no luck (it froze on the fire wire screen with both drives - a Maxtor and a Western Digital). I am thinking that something on the mother board has died so that normal booting is prevented but safe mode booting is allowed.

Sep 6, 2009When I turned my iMac on this morning (iMac G5 PPC 10.5.8) it went through all of the "normal" steps (gong, grey screen, apple logo, progress wheel, blue screen) and stopped at the blue screen. Thinking it was just a fluke, I shut the machine down and restarted, only to have it stop at the blue screen again. After disconnecting everything going into the iMac except the keyboard and mouse, I attempted to boot into safe mode but it stopped at the blue screen again.
Next, I flashed the PRAM (big gong, single quieter gong) and afterward it came to the blue screen. I reattached my external drive and selected to boot from a 2-day old backup. Using the backup I was able to log into both my regular account and my "test" account (without login items). I still cannot login (except to my external drive backup).

Nov 30, 2010I tried fsck -f fsck -y multiple times, booting in safe mode, zaping the pram and all that stuff, nothing as worked. I don't really care about how to fix it but I care more about, Is there any possible way I can get files off of the macbook even though it wont boot. Like is there a way for another computer (windows or mac) to pick it up so I can transfer files? What accessories will I need?

Mar 22, 2012I have a 2.0 GHz early 2005 Power Mac G5 (7,3) that won't get past the light blue screen at start-up. I've tried everything - reset the PRAM, Apple Hardware Check (on overnight loops, everything came back OK), fsck (all OK), repaired my HD and permissions on it, and then erased the drive using Target Disk Mode and another Mac, and attempted to reinstall OSX from the install disk that came with it (with OSX Tiger). I've tried switching out the RAM with no luck.
The only thing I haven't tried is a new video card (the installed one is an ATI Radeon 9600). Here's what it does: powers on with the usual chime, then moves on to the white Apple screen, the wheel spins, then it moves on to a darker blue screen, then it finally moves on to a lighter blue screen with an arrow, and it just stays there. It will boot into safe mode (pressing shift), but I can't even upgrade to Leopard in safe mode, much less figure out what's wrong.

Nov 28, 2009I've been using my Intel Mac-Mini without a hitch for three years now. Previously it had been plugged into a Samsung 32" LCD TV, but I've just swapped it over for a 1080p Panasonic 37".
Now when I turn on the mac it takes a long time to boot up and then eventually settles on a blue screen. The mouse pointer is visible but nothing else. I've tried using a dvi to vga adaptor and an HDMI to vga cable and the same thing happens.I tried a 15" Samsung monitor and the same thing happens.
If I boot in 'safe' mode it allows me to type in my password but when I try to log in it fades to blue and then returns to the log in page.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Won't Work To Boot In Safe Mode
Sep 2, 2010This iBook G4 will not boot. I can boot it into safe mode, but that is about it. I have tried resetting the PRAM, to no avail. It cannot even boot off of an OSX disc. When I try to boot it normally, it just shows the Apple symbol, but no progress wheel thing spinning. When I try to boot it normally, it appears as if the hard drive is not being read from/written to, because it is dead silent, but when I boot into safe mode, you can hear the HDD noise. When I booted into safe mode, I checked the HDD's SMART status, and it says "Verified," so I do not think that the HDD is at fault. However, it still has its original HDD from 2004.

Aug 6, 2006i splashed some theraflu on the right side of the keyboard approximately 3 days ago. as many had mentioned, i removed the keyboard and carefully removed any liquid residue i could find and kept my computer off for a few days. today i went to figure out the damage and everything seems to work okay in terms of the computer turning on and stuff. the keyboard is still acting up though. the left side of the keyboard works mostly okay, but if i press certain letters, the number along with random number appears. the right side of the keyboard, on the other hand, several keys don't even respond at all. from these "symptoms" do you guys think the only thing that i may have to replace is the keyboard or could these "symptoms" i've described be related to some other damage also? how much does replacing a keyboard usually cost? i'm thinking this isn't going to be covered by my warranty. lastly, i've noticed that when i do turn the computer on, it automatically starts in safe-mode.

Dec 31, 2008I have just updated my iMac G5 to 10.5.6. When I restart, it hangs on the blue screen before log in. I have restarted in Safe Mode (no problem there) and removed the APE files in the library folder, as suggested on support.apple.com. I have also repaired permissions and verified the drive. Still no luck.
Is it really possible that the computer needs hours to restart after the update? And would it be better for me to restore using Time Machine or do an Archive & Install with the Leopard discs? The computer was acting a little funky before I updated to 10.5.6 (iTunes was sluggish), but I never had a problem rebooting.

Jun 11, 2009I installed the 10.5.7 update yesterday on my iMac and had no issues with it. It was rebooting with no problems until this morning I tried to boot Mac OSX 10.5.7 and it hangs on the blue screen with just the pointer and a message telling me that spotlight has quit unexpectedly. I have tried switching to safe mode and still have the same problem and I have also tried to repair the disk on Disk Utility but it tells me that disk appears to be ok. I could reinstall Mac OSX but I don't want to loose files and music that I have on Leopard.

Nov 2, 2009Over the past month I have encountered a number of bugs with Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro (mid 2006). Ever once in a while, usually during high performance task (like watching flash or encoding with handbrake) the temperature of my cpu will spike to 85-90 degrees celsius and then the system freezes.
During this freeze, I can still move my mouse, but I am unable to click on anything on the dock or any program. Moving the mouse over the dock does not invoke the magnification either. I have to do a hard reset to fix the problem.
Also every once in a while, a long blue horizontal line will appear in on the screen. (sometimes their in iChat windows, sometimes safari, and sometimes the desktop as shown in the photo).

May 22, 2010my G5 (10.5.4)in work has some HD errors (From the Disk utility program) that need to be resolved by restarting with the os CD. But The OSX Disc will not load i just get a light blue screen. Is there anyway i can fix these problems?

Aug 24, 2010I just go a new Macbook Pro 13' from my school (my school made it mandatory to get a mac this year) and I was installing some of my applications. Then I got the "You need to restart your computer" message. I restarted, and all i got was a blue screen with my pointer. Then after a while it says the same restart message. Also I have tried booting from the Snow Leopard Disk, but I get the same message before the actual SL installer comes up. I have been able to get the Macbook to boot in safe mode and I repaired permissions and the disk, however that does not seem to help. I have also reset the PRAM and that did nothing. I am running out of ideas... how can I fix this? I am using 10.6.4.

Dec 6, 2014My MacBook is making the startup sound but goes straight to a black/dark grey screen. In other words you can see the screen switching on but it's blank. It's in charge mode, has no other external peripherals attached and it's updated to most recent OSX Yosemite.
I only purchased it in May of this year (refurbished). I have tried booting in to safe mode but again the screen remains the same. Â

Mar 8, 2012I'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?

Jun 5, 2012my macbook pro today started to freeze at logo scrren. I tried to start it up in both safe and recovery modes but it doesn't work either. I got the system to start in safe mode only once and the scrren looked like in the attached image.When I tried printing the screen instead of taking a photo with my mobile, the image appeared to be normal (without those noisy rectangles), but it wasnt. Then itried restarting but it's been impossible. As i said i tried booting on safe and recovery modes but the circle below the apple logo appèars and then it freezes again. I read about aproblem with the graphic card similar to mine in earlier models, I don`t know if it is the same problem.Â

Dec 13, 2007After installing an app ('Detour') I was asked to (or it was suggested that I should) restart my computer. I did so, and now my 1.33GHz iBook G4 turns on - but it will not go any further than a blank blue screen (after the initial grey screen that appears.) Thankfully, all my data is on an external drive. I keep my music and footage which I have shot on there amongst other things. I also have a backup on my external via Time Machine of all my data which I keep on the iBook drive, so nothing should be lost.

May 9, 2008I have an ibook g4. It freezes at the blue screen with the apply on it. The little circle goes around and around but nothing happens. I took it to an apple technician yesterday who told me the hard drive is toast so I should just throw it away. (Actually, he offered to take the keyboard.) When you do the fsck -fy it says that the hard drive was repaired sucessfully. Is it possible to have a hard drive that is bad and a message which says it has been repaired successfully? I don't mind having the hard drive replaced if that is what is wrong. I do not have any of the install discs any longer.
