Windows On Mac :: System Booting Without Option To Select OS

Sep 8, 2010

So I was trying to install windows on my Imac using bootcamp, and everything seemed to be working fine. I put in my Windows CD and pressed continue, it then loaded me up to the windows installation page and it told me that I could not use the Bootcamp partition to put my windows OP on, because the partition needed to be NSF or something like that, so I highlighted the Bootcamp partition from the menu, and then clicked the partition button, after I had done that, it was then able to install windows on that partition. After the installation was complete, my Imac now only boots up the windows operating system without any option to what operating system to be booted. What do I do?

Windows On Mac :: How To Set A Dual Booting Option At Startup

Jan 12, 2011

I believe the Macs at my college allow the user to select from either Mac OSX or Windows at startup. However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.

Mar 9, 2008

I installed Windows Vista, and Vista boots up fine. However, I hold down the command keys when starting my computer up again, and it won't let me select Mac OS X. It just starts Vista.

On "My Computer" in Vista I see "Bootcamp (C" and "Macintosh HD (E in my Hard Disks Drives. Also, whenever I start up Vista it tells me something about a wrongly formatted drive. My files are still all in the Mactintosh HD drive, but I don't know how to start up Mac OS X.

Does OS X supports a feature (I think it's called S3) that allows the computer to write everything into the the HDD before sleeping and can wake up from a complete power down? I switch between Windows and Mac very often, for games mostly. But I don't want to shut down Mac every time I want to play a game. I don't want VM or any kind.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 10.7 Won't Boot Unless Hold Option Key And Select Boot Drive

Apr 27, 2012

Last week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly.  It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there.   However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore?  Holding down the Option key is getting old.

Windows On Mac :: Black Screen With Underscore At Top Left Corner / Booting Into Windows 7

Oct 11, 2009

This only happens when I choose to boot into windows. The screen sort of hangs for about 20 seconds in a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner before even starting to boot into windows. I know its normal for this to happen for like 5 seconds tops, but this is happening for about 20 seconds and its dreadful trying to boot into Windows 7 because it takes so long. When windows is done starting up i don't even get any messages saying startup failed or something like that. This is so annoying that I even reinstalled everything but the same thing happened.

Windows On Mac :: Booting Windows XP From External Hard Drive

Nov 18, 2009

I have an external hard drive which I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 onto. It was a long and painful process but I finally was able to get a modified XP install disc ready and from a Dell PC running Windows was able to install onto the external hard drive and I'm able to boot from it and everything. I did this on a PC because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to boot correctly from an external drive in Mac.

Anyway, the hardest part is in the past and now my only problem is how to boot this external hard drive from my macbook, which is primarily what I want to use it on. I currently have a Macbook with three operating systems on it: Mac OS 10.5.8, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP SP3. I use rEFIt to boot into these operating systems. I tried using rEFIt to boot into XP on the external hard drive but it just gives me the legacy error messages saying that it couldn't load and noting the booting legacy os is not well supported by mac.

Windows On Mac :: Cannot Find Windows HD On Startup Holding Option?

Sep 9, 2009

I've used the bootcamp assistant to create a 200 GB partition for Windows. I installled windows 7 x64 on this partition, everything is going well so far. I'm able to press the option key after installation and run windows and perform some updates (note, I couldn't install the required software IN windows from the snow leopard disk, let's hope this is not the source of my problem).

Everything went well so I booted back to OSX and I noticed that I needed some more partitions, so I've split my Macintosh HD further into a Media and a School partition. I didn't touch the windows partition though.

After experiencing (before) with hackintosh computers I know that i have to rewrite the boot configuration of the harddrive. Because now I'm not seeing the Windows HD anymore while holding the option key at startup and therefore unable to boot into Windows anymore. Even parallels can't discover the Windows partition.

I've tried repairing permissions, and nothing. I've tried to use the repair option on the Windows 7 disk which states it can't be done.

What can I do? Do I have to repartition it again in an different order (bootcamp states that it can only create a Windows partition if there's only 1 partition in the harddrive, so it's logical to repartition the drive after bootcamp created the Windows HD or even after the installation of Windows itself). Perhaps I need to rewrite the boot config of the mac, which I don't have a clue about.

Being 64 bit windows is not an issue, because it worked at first (before repartitioning)

IMac :: System Not Booting At All From Any Media

I've tried unplugging for 30 minutes, all the different various ways to boot (safe, CD, clearing PRAM). Could it be the PRAM battery causing this?

Hardware :: Mac G4 Not Booting From System Install DVD

Dec 18, 2009

I just got a Mac G4 tower from a doctor I work with. He needed me to delete the whole hard drive before I took it. I booted off the OSX tiger DVD and wiped the drive with no problems, (I even booted it off the DVD the next day, to show my friend that the drive was wiped), but now that I have it home I am unable to boot from the OSX DVD. It shows the apple screen with the apple logo and the spinning... whatever you call it..... but then the screen just goes black after a minute or two. Have ejected the DVD, and retried, Zapped the PRAM by using control opt P+R and by unplugging the G4 and pushing the PMU button next to the battery.

Power Mac G5 :: System Not Booting - Only Gets To Apple Screen

Nov 25, 2007

I have a 2005 G5 PowerMac. It has been locking up lately. Tonight it will not boot. Everytime I turn it on I get to the apple screen and the circle keeps going round and round. I then followed the directions to reset the PMU and I disconnected the second hard drive. Now it will still not boot and gets to the apple screen, circles a couple of times then locks up. I have disconnected everything except the monitor, keyboard and mouse and still have the same problem. The largest issue is the CD drive will not open so I cannot attempt to reload the OS or anything else that requires the CD drive. I do not know if there is a manual way to open the drive. I have searched the help forums and only see the keyboard as an option. I have read many posts that the 9800 video card is a problem - we have an ATI 800 XT and I have not read anything hear about that card being an issue.

IMac :: Cancel Sound Plays When Booting Up The System?

Nov 2, 2010

This is a bit of an old one I know. When I turn my Mac on it goes through the boot up process and as it about to come to the desktop image it selects the HD Mac as if I had pressed it with the mouse and then starts the cancel sound bonging away until I press the escape button on the keyboard. This normally keeps it at bay. Although on occasion it suddenly selects it again and starts playing the cancel sound again. When I unplug the keyboard it doesn't make that sound at all. I hate the wireless keyboard but wonder if I buy another wired one will it start making the same noise again?
